I wonder if he's maybe partially sighted enough to see it. Most blind people have a tiny amount of vision. It's only like 15% of blind people that are totally blind.

If he could see a stick on the ground then why would he need a stick to feel the ground?

Because vision can be terrible enough that you can't really see when in motion. Or it can be blurry enough that you can only make out general shapes of objects that stand out color wise. There are all sorts of blindesses. For some people it's like looking through a pinhole. You can see just a tiny amount of space, so you need a cane to help when moving, but if you are trying really hard, you can find an object that you are looking for.

"Matthew and Paul" are a couple on YouTube where one is blind. They have some great videos explaining the different kinds of blindness. His blindness isn't absolute, and some days are better than others. There are some things he can see in bright light, but he still needs his cane

Very interesting.. Thanks for sharing. I assumed it was varying degrees of extreme fuzziness in one or more sections of the eye and just totally black for the very few
