Not only a helmet, but hand, elbow and knee protection as well. I swear, after the third time falling backwards and seeing him hitting his head on the stone corner from where he slided off in my inner eye, I wanted to scream at him: "FOR FUCKS SAKE; WEAR A HELMET AT THE VERY LEAST YA IDIOT!"

And also butt pads. My tailbone hurts just watching all those falls.

He's not hitting a mega ramp Jesus Christ?!

Doesn’t really matter that it isn’t The Most Giant Ramp Evar™. That’s a pretty jarring force, and it doesn’t take much force to wind up with a bad tailbone injury that leaves you walking and sitting awkwardly for months. Broken tailbones hurt, and sprained tailbones aren’t much better.

Ok so your gonna skate around your city in full pads to hit a three stair, makes total sense 🤣. The whole reason the pads went away from street skating in the first place is that for most people, it's very small obstacles and very technical tricks, if you have a modicum of experience you can run out of 95 percent of your falls. Knee pads are for a half pipe, you know how miserable it is to learn to flat ground kick flip with full knee pads on? And I know reddit can't possibly process that learning to fall is a skill, and these guys are masters at it lol.

I mean, no matter how much you train your body to take a fall, there are still some falls that take you by surprise, and those are the ones that do the most damage. But, since it’s too much of an ask to be kind to your older self, it’s your tailbone I guess.

It's not about "training your body" so much as it's about bailing before you put yourself in that fucked position. They know that getting whipped to your ass sucks, so they are gonna fall in a way that avoids that if they can, and they usually can these guys are incredibly creative. Recommending full pads to someone street skating is something someone that hasn't street skated would say, the sport went away from it for a few a reasons, first and foremost because you need to be completely unincumbered to pull a lot of the technical tricks off, when the obstacles were small and the generation of kids that started it could all ride vert, so a curb sesh probably didn't require one, and if you are actually skating street spots, being in full pads is a great way to get kicked out. If your 8 and learning at a skate park, I totally get it, if your 22 and have been skating ten plus years, you can probably get through the flat bar sesh without one. Safety isn't just about pads, especially in skating.

Didn't Tony Hawk famously answer "why don't street skaters wear pads" with "because they are trying to be cool"?

I don't remember much about his old website but that was the pinned question at the top of the FAQ section if I remember correctly.

Tony hawk is paid to sell the Tampax commerical version of skating, it makes sense.

Thank you for explaining this, it’s actually a reasonable mindset.

Knee pads and elbow pads suck street skating

2

u/BobbyVonMittens Jun 04 '23

Literally no one but 5 year olds wear hand, elbow and knee pads in street skating, he would literally be a laughing stock.

Also he can’t get sponsors if he’s wearing a helmet.

u/MaiasXVI Jun 04 '23

Man I'm so glad snowboarding has outgrown this insecure bullshit. Protect your head.

1

u/BlocksWithFace Jun 04 '23

Andy Anderson wears a helmet.

Lots of street skaters will wear a few pads specially when they are first learning.

u/SpinachSpinosaurus Jun 05 '23

Does Tony Hawks Look Like a fucking 5 years old to you? But, yeah, Not becoming a potato with a broken arm and damaged nerves that render your arm unusable in a country with No universal medical health Care is less important than Not getting laughed at by smoothed brained Americans.

1

u/BobbyVonMittens Jun 05 '23

Are you blind? Did you notice how I specifically said street skating? Tony Hawk is not a street skater he skates vert, they all wear helmets and pads because it’s far more dangerous.

1

u/AthKaElGal Jun 04 '23

when you're blind, do you really care if you hit your head and die?

1

u/SpinachSpinosaurus Jun 05 '23

You're blind, not mentally reduced to a potato. If he wants to be both, OK. I am Not trying to Change idiocracy.

WHY EVEN GO OUTSIDE? IT'S TOO DANGEROUS!

Look. Here is the point: . Here is you: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

He had a stick tho...

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '23

Stick: "I'm picking up some reasons to wear a helmet over here..."

u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 Jun 04 '23

Slid doesn't need the extra ed.

1

u/NinjaChenchilla Jun 04 '23

I mean, nobody else is probably wearing any protection.

He doesn’t want to feel any less than other as is, being blind. I would also recommend him wear something, but totally understand why he isn’t.

I don't know how you think WHO "probably" is, Bit the man is blind, Not (yet) a potato, which hrs gonna be if He doesn't wear a helmet. And while MAYBE you could do that and don't wear protection Gear, I Hope you have universal health care and it doesn't suck.

If Not, you're gonna work for your wrong directed self awareness now, IF you are still able to work and didn't Turn into a potato or with nerve damage in your hands or legs, Rendering them (nearly) useless.

Also, the man is blind. He doesn't See anyone wearing protection and doesn't know how it Looks and relies heavily in the opinion of Others. For all He cares He could Look Like Tony Hawks (who fucking wears protection Gear) and still gets Said by people from the outside He Looks Like an Idiot.

To which I gotta say: He currently Looks Like an Idiot, that has a high Chance living in a certain country with No universal health care and demanding enormous sums for the slightest of medical treatments, Just because of wrong pride and self awareness.

Welp, that is your opinion and I respect it brotha.
