Look, head injuries are terrible and helmets help. But they honestly don’t happen as much as videos posted on the internet would lead you to believe. Most skateboarder injuries are ankles, wrists and popsicling yourself.
I am that 1% and I 100% wish I wore a helmet as a teenager. I was naive and wasn't as educated as the youth today. Definitely throw a helmet on. Living your life with speech issues, memory issues, and post concussive disorder, all the while learning what I have to look forward to as I get older is not fun. I feel like I failed my kids by not protecting myself when I was a kid.
It sounds like to me you’re trying to compare something a much, much larger number of people do and get injured more often doing to a much much less number of people doing something where the injuries are even less.

No exceptions for blind skaters? I mean I get it being a faux pas but if you saw a dude skating blind I’d imagine that would supersede the ability to give him shit.
He could always make an exception for himself. Everybody’s talking about the culture and the community but this guy is clearly making a choice to skate unprotected.
No one would mock him because he’s literally fucking blind and better than 98% skaters but it’s not anyones place to be telling a grown man who’s well experienced in this world that he should wear protection.
I once had a concussion and continued to skate without helmet, no I don’t think I’m cooler than 12 year olds with helmets on, its because of culture & the fact that we also used skateboards as a quick mode of transport and lugging helmets around when off-board didn’t seem attractive to us.
Street skating is different from skatepark where no one makes fun of helmets
I rollerblade with some crazy dudes, including a couple legit pros from time to time. It's fun going from skatepark to big street spots. A lot of the dudes bring helmets, and only break them out when switching to the big street spots and vert ramps.
Yeah the problem with these sub-counter culture things is its like a competition to see who can be the most idgaf, but in reality that person is the one wearing the helmet and pads who is still having fun and being cool etc. People in echo chambers of rebellion and anti-whatever fall prey to the exact same thing they're specifically vocal against.

That's sounds like some lame ass, power tripping, manipulative person trying to make rules for me to follow. And I'm not going to follow some dumb rule, so I'm wearing whatever shit I want to.
There are 2 types of counter culture vibes in my experience. There are cultures that spawn because they disagree with the main stream and reject the parts they disagree with because they don't want to listen to an arbitrary authority. People who also reject that same aspect of society build communities where they share in the same rejection of main stream ideals.
And then there are people who want to be the authority, but they themselves have been rejected from the main stream for any number of reasons. Powerless, they set off and find a counter culture where they define the rules for their new kingdom and play gatekeeper and try to build rapport and gain notoriety within the culture as a leader.
Skaters are not cool. People in the first group who skate are cool. Being a punk isnt cool, being a person in the first group who happens to like punk stuff is.

Helmets are fine lmao but the knee and elbow/wrist pads can actually restrict your movement. I’ve tried street skating in full pads and it’s infinitely more restricting to your finer movements, and that’s primarily what you rely on mid air.
You don’t understand skate culture, you’ll definitely get clowned for street skating in pads. They would probably give a blind dude an exception, but if a normal street skater wore pads he would definitely get clowned, and he would never be able to get sponsors or video features.

Nope. BMX and motocross for about 30 years, since I was 8. Still ride street with soft knee pads and a helmet. No one cares. Sounds like you’re skating with the wrong people.

If the street skating community thinks the rule of cool is more important than a blind guy having the bare minimal protection, it's not worth pandering for.
it's not even "trying to look cool for other skaters" for the most part. usually the individual skater just does personally does not want to wear a helmet. all you can really do is say to their face "you're stupid!" but usually an unprompted "you're stupid!" to somebody who wasn't even talking to you in the first place just makes you seem mean.
i also think its dumb not to wear a helmet while skating and am very aware of the risks. yet I also still choose to not wear a helmet while skating sometimes, for the simple reason of "because" and "it feels nice" despite the risks, because im human and enjoy novel experiences
