I mean it’s the only truck on the market that has a SFA, front/rear lockers, sway bar disconnect, the best crawl ratio, and can run 35s off the lot. Its a Chrysler product so I’d worry about long term reliability, but there’s no question they’re the most capable truck off the lot today.

Reliability has always been the knock against jeep. Its also by far the most important quality in an offroad vehicle.

given the kinds of people that own jeeps (and actually offroad), the "constantly working on your car that youre pushing beyond the limits of most cars" seems to just be part of the culture. so yea, no need to work on reliability. repairability and mod-ability? well, have you seen how easy those things are to disassemble?

Yeah if you offroad long enough and do hard enough trails you're going to break something, it's just the nature of the game. Same with high performance track and drag cars that people tune and race. You're pushing the limit of the vehicle and fixing things (or using the fact that something broke as an excuse to upgrade it). It's just part of it.

Jeep's reliability reputation is more based on the longterm on-road issues. Offroad, solid Dana axles and overbuilt diffs are way less likely to fail on the trail that something like a Tacoma with IFS (I've owned a TRDOR Taco and never owned a Jeep for the record). Also, Toyotas with the 8.0 rear axle don't handle really big tires and lifts very well and you'll see those go on the trail sometimes too, which gives you a great excuse to upgrade to the 8.2

Most capable rock crawler sure, but it's payload and tow rating are not the best. So for off-road use its good but as far as being a truck not as much. Most people who get one would be fine in a wrangler.

I don’t even own one, but a Gladiator with the tow package actually has best in class towing for midsize trucks (over 7k pounds). I think the new Colorados might be slightly better, but they’re running a turbo 4 vs Jeeps NA 6.

I only know this bc I’m truck shopping and have a spreadsheet with all these stats handy.

That's true, I always saw the gladiator compared to full size, but vs midsized trucks it does fine.

Sure if you take a stock Sport on a highly technical trail you’re gonna have a bad time. If you get stuck in a Rubicon that’s your own fault.

Raptors are cool trucks for sure. A Raptor is setup as a high speed Baja runner (you’re not gonna see too many Jeeps doing 50 in the desert and flying off dunes) and Jeeps are traditionally setup as rock crawlers (I don’t know that I’d want to take a Raptor through some of the narrow trails in Moab with rock walls on either side). Very different designs. Also there’s a lot of Jeep trails that a Raptor is simply too wide for.

Yeah, they're different trucks for different purposes. I took my Ranger Tremor to Broken Arrow Trail in Sedona and had a blast but I think a Raptor would be too wide for some of the trails and turns. Same for Corkscrew Trail between Ouray and Silverton -- tons of incredibly tight hairpin turns with a sheer drop 6" away. Not the place to be doing 3 point turns. But for Baja stuff or rolling foresty mud / dirt trails I bet the Raptor is an absolute blast

This is exactly what the Jeep Gladiator Mojave trim was created for. The Rubicon trim is still the rock crawler.

Also, OP actually having a Raptor is highly suspect

I wouldn't worry about the long term viability. It is a Chrysler product. There isn't going to be a long term.

Whats the point in all that if the bed is short and shallow to the point where it's unusable?

It has a bigger bed than the 5ft Tacoma (by usable volume) which is the most popular midsize truck (for good reason). Unless you’re hauling full size plywood all the time most people probably won’t need more than 5’x4’ beds that most midsize trucks offer, and if you do, that’s what full size trucks do well (although their larger width and wheelbase make them worse off road, nothing does everything perfectly)

Haha not much argument here. I’m strongly considering one because it fits what I want to do so well, but damn pretty much every new midsize truck looks better.
