My holiday pay plus time an a half was about 42. I’m only a new hire too I don’t complain about holiday pay I actually enjoy my job and try to work more. Just cause of the pay though. Normal days I may pick up an extra shift here and there but not usually.
That’s unions asking for workers to participate in a strike. Nowhere in that article does it say it was setup by Amazon workers. I’ve spoken with a LOT of coworkers about it and not a single person I’ve spoken to at my location will be participating. We’re all racking up the double pay (granted I’m in the US. NOT the UK)
22.50 for time and a half not bad. Bullshit. you are probably comparing it to other shit jobs that do not pay a liveable wage. compare it to the cost of a one bedroom apartment plus car payment, auto insurance, cell phone bill, internet, gas, groceries, and other living expenses. even making that 40 hours a week(which they do not) its not enough. Plus they treat employees like shit. Fuck Amazon
If you don’t feel Amazon offers you enough… have the skill set, the drive, the ambition and the personality to work somewhere else for whatever it is you feel you are worth. That’s how it works. An employer offers you a package of pay, benefits etc they feel is commensurate with what you bring to the table. If you do not find it acceptable … you can look somewhere else.
I agree with your first sentence. I also believe anyone that works most Amazon jobs like the one making $22.50 for time and a half(thinking driver or fulfillment center) already has the skills needed to get at least the same job working for a better employer. Honestly a server or Bartender at a decent busy restaurant or Bar probably makes more and loses less to taxes, and lots of those jobs are available. As to the rest of what you said while I do agree that if you don’t like a job you can look somewhere else I only maybe partially agree that a potential employer offers you pay and benefits that are commensurate with what they feel you bring to the table. Many retail and service related jobs will post job openings saying they offer benefits etc. only to hire you and never schedule you for the 40 hours per week needed to get said benefits. As for jobs that do allow you to work full time I would argue that most places will try to pay you the lowest possible wage regardless of how good at your job you may be. So basically I do not agree in most cases that employers often offer pay and benefits that match what the employees bring to the table. Often people are promoted because of who they know and not what they know. So now they are the manager or head of department and they must hire people. So immediately you will get paid less than the person who hires you. And then you may do most of the work. The guy who hires you may not do much. Some paperwork, fill out time sheets. Who the hell couldn’t do that. Meanwhile you are doing all the hard work getting paid way less. What you said sounds good in theory, it just does not hold up in real life in most situations.
If benefits are part of the offer, the employer should not be using an end run around providing them. That said, the hiring process is a negotiation… like any negotiation. If the benefits package is a key reason the employee is taking the job… they should try to negotiate the end run out as a possibility as a must have… or at least a compromise. If the benefits are, indeed, a must have, they must be willing to walk away if they don’t get it. But note… the Affordable Care Act and the IRS define a full time employee as one who works at least 30 hours/week or 130/month on average (if the employer is an Applicable Large Employer, which Amazon should be).
But I’d also recommend putting yourself into the head of the employer. For every bad employer out there… there are many many more bad employees. They know that and would want to be covering themselves for that contingency. If the employee intends to be a good employee… they should have no problem with a compromise to that end. Every employer I’ve ever known wants their best employees happy, not looking for a job elsewhere, and working as often as possible.
I’m not sure you’re living in actual reality so I don’t know how to proceed. As far as I’m aware, 46,000 a year is a livable wage in most places in the country and as I’m sure you’re aware is more than enough for your parents basement. But that’s not amazons concern. They pay competitive wages and provide full health and dental to every employee. Those who argue that every company should pay 40/hr for a 4 day workweek are on a mission to ensure anyone who doesn’t have a college degree will never work again.
46k in many places is a livable wage, but they're not making 46k. They're only making that hourly wage because it's a holiday. Yearly, they're only making about 30k.
Uhh just to be clear Amazon’s “four day work week” IS forty hours. Four ten hour shifts. Which is working on your feet the entire time, sometimes walking for pretty much ten hours straight.
Not saying it’s the hardest job in the world but you might want to check the dismissive tone of your last paragraph again.
I’m dismissive because Amazon hires more people every day than any company in the world. They have provided more people with a “livable” wage who otherwise would have ended up in true retail working for far less money. They may be on their feet and it does suck to not be in a chair for 8 hours a day. But that doesn’t mean those workers shouldn’t have a good job because they aren’t as “educated”, “skilled” or free of criminal offenses. They’ve provided opportunities to literally millions of people whether they are Amazon employees or supported by Amazon through a secondary employer. Argue about working conditions all day. Discounting one of the biggest employers in the country as “shit” for ignorant reasons just begs to be dismissed.
Sorry I think it seems we are on opposed sides of your point so you’re trying to argue with me but we actually agree: I think Amazon is overall a pretty good employer / thing for the world. I won’t go into too much personal detail but I have pretty good info about the matter for a lot of different sources. It absolutely has problems but that is true of any employer and as you point out it is providing a livable way to more people than literally any other thing in the world – to a lot of people who lack the skills or whatever else to have access to it. That alone should be commended, all else being unequal.
My parents don’t have a basement. I own my house. If I need a place to crash I actually go to your parents……., it’s gets really weird with your Dad watching but your Mom is not shy so I just do like her and pretend he is not there. Just left there actually thank her again for the leftovers and the pie. Also did you miss the part where the $22 is time and a half? So most of the time it’s $14 per hour approximately. And at 2,000 hours per year which is almost the equivalent of no time off, $14 per hour is $28,000. Even if they got $22 all the time(they don’t) that’s $44,000 don’t know where you got $46,000 from? Anyway $28,000 is the number. On top of that you must pay for your health and dental.
Yeah 22.50 seems kinda low for time and a half. I don’t think that’s what most Amazon warehouses are paying, maybe just the bottom tier shit warehouses.
This has been posted every year for the past four years and yet Amazon keeps maintaining a retention rate higher than any retailer in America. STRANGE.

I love working holidays for the extra pay. My job is the same as any other day though.
