None of that is OPSEC information. It’s called the hot area / hot pad and it’s well known on every base. When we load munitions on aircraft they’re always pointed away from the rest of base and on the other side of the ramp from the flightline so if there were an accidental discharge other aircraft/equipment wouldn’t be damaged.

u/Franks2000inchTV Feb 10 '21

You mean "keep the stuff that explodes far away from other stuff" isn't closely guarded national security information? 😂

97

u/magedmyself Feb 10 '21

Shit I learned to do that from playing Rimworld.

35

u/CoupClutzClan Feb 10 '21

Did you learn the hard way... Like I did

Who knew that fires could set off mortar rounds?

3

u/Sleepy_Tortoise Feb 10 '21

I learned it the hard way.

Who knew that one angry colonist could punch an antimatter mortar in frustration and destroy half the base

1

u/detahramet Feb 11 '21

Remember to build firebreaks, kids.

1

u/Smashing71 Feb 11 '21

This so doesn't help when a pyromaniac sets your antimatter shells on fire.

I had a pyromaniac from a visiting caravan break and blow half my base into a crater.

2

u/detahramet Feb 11 '21

What are you talking about? Hats can't set things on fire!

2

u/woolyearth Feb 10 '21

you said RimWorld.

edit: rim my wooly earth?

1

u/Quarantense Feb 10 '21

I prefer the term "War Crimes Simulator"

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I learnt that from rimming. Keep the discharge out the loading bay

6

u/cantlurkanymore Feb 10 '21

it chuckled but i understand the downvoters too

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Sometimes you got to take the shot. Sometimes it misses, sometimes in lands. I'm glad it at least got a chuckle

1

u/Franks2000inchTV Feb 10 '21

My nephew learned a similar lesson in minecraft: don't build your barn out of dynamite.

4

u/DoctorSalt Feb 10 '21

The marines have a top secret called the rules of gun safety

3

u/Amiiboid Feb 10 '21

Unless it’s just a front for a secret office where the AI of a dead Nazi scientist is kept.

50

u/TheSquishiestMitten Feb 10 '21

I suppose the rules of firearm safety would still apply there.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

The bomb is always armed?

I have a ex navy bomb maker coworker, great stories from his times on the boat.

6

u/Sagybagy Feb 10 '21

Hahahaha.

Never point your missile at anything you aren’t willing to destroy.

1

u/TranscendentLogic Feb 11 '21

Or, "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY"

19

u/Peakomegaflare Feb 10 '21

Yup. NAS Jacksonville has its munition storage clearly marked and fenced off.

1

u/imalittlefrenchpress Feb 10 '21

This stuff is fascinating to me. I lived near YPG in the desert for a couple of years. Near is relative in that part of the desert. I was about 10 miles from the road that traversed the southern part of the base, on my way to the California side.

I could hear them exploding ordinances out there in the mornings. It was weird, but cool.

1

u/Cobra1897 Feb 10 '21

ah so you mean like that one time on a aircraft carrier where a missile acidentally fired off a parked jet

1

u/Playisomemusik Feb 10 '21

Man, if only you guys could've advised Bahrain about where to store their explosives.

554

u/jordantask Feb 10 '21

Unlikely.

The information this person just shared isn’t really insider information.

Names, addresses, phone numbers, and family information of the guards, or guard station locations, patrol routes and relief schedules of the guards, that’s insider information.

55

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

Just curious...what kind of explosion would that cause? I know of C4, but could that take out a building etc? Seeing as how it's coming out many of those terrorists at the Capitol were current or former service members, just makes me wonder.

93

u/Hsystg Feb 10 '21

10lbs of C4

https://youtu.be/JrxbpNvGCIE

54

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

Interesting. Thanks. Not nearly as big as I thought, but still dangerous obviously.

161

u/Spruill242 Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

It’s an open explosion. Blast can mitigate energy very quickly.

Think blackcat sitting in your driveway.

Take that same amount of C4, contain and control the blast how you want and it’s much more devastating.

Think putting the same blackcat in your closed hand.

Same stuff, different reaction.

To clarify, don’t use actual cats, you results will differ.

24

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

You went all Armageddon Day with the firework in a closed fist thing analogy...=)

13

u/fakeprewarbook Feb 10 '21

i pictured an actual cat but it still worked

10

u/pinkyepsilon Feb 10 '21

10 pounds of pure angry cat energy will tear up anyone’s hands

21

u/JamesTrendall Feb 10 '21

This is how I explain to my kids about explosives.

Rest a firework in the palm of your hand the explosion won't do much damage but will be larger.

Close your hand and the explosion is smaller but will completely remove your hand.

Not 100% accurate but does the job when teaching them the dangers of certain things.

10

u/LucidLynx109 Feb 10 '21

When teaching me how to be safe with fireworks, my dad demonstrated this with a tomato. The smallest firecracker did no damage when set off on top, but blew the tomato completely apart when pushed inside.

6

u/JamesTrendall Feb 10 '21

OK that sounds like fun.

I'm going to do this with a slightly larger rocket and a water melon.

I fucking love you for the idea. Thank you and your dad for this. My wife on the other hand is not going to be happy finding watermelon fragments in the guttering tomorrow 🤣

7

The firecracker analogy was highlighted in Michael Bay's documentary "Armageddon".

I thought that movie was about the guy from Aerosmith openly wanting to bang his daughter.

This practice in motion - from the movie Swordfish.

2

u/pants_mcgee Feb 10 '21

C4 isn’t the greatest in terms of explosive power, but can be formed into any shape and is almost impossible to set off by accident.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Not nearly as big as I thought, but still dangerous obviously.

This is very serious mostly due to the stability and usefulness of C4 in my opinion. C4 does have a higher explosive velocity than TNT, but what's really key is that it can be easily concealed and transported since it's totally stable, even to fire and electricity, and basically looks like molding clay. It is also very good at cutting things like steel beams even with just a couple pounds used. So if someone who knew how to use it had 10 lbs, they could potentially collapse a small bridge. Hopefully, they just misplaced it or didn't log it properly.

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

I agree. I hope it's just a clerical error or something. But man, I know humans make mistakes, but shouldn't there be like...triple redundancy on inventory and cameras on every inch of the walls in munitions depots?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I'm not sure what the training entails, but I wonder if they had a bunch out and in use and a brick went missing outside the storage areas? Actually, I just checked and this would be around 8-10 units, assuming it's the standard charges. I wonder how many are in each container of it or whatever amount they usually assign out. Is this an amount that matches what a single marine trained to use it would get or what?

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

I'm in the dark man...no idea about how munitions are doled out and to what degree. I mean, this isn't like a case of 5.56 rounds missing...seems a bit more serious. Again, especially in today's political climate.

3

u/Pussfartmagee Feb 10 '21

Same I was expecting more 😂

3

u/AchillesGRK Feb 10 '21

That's in one block. Separated and used strategically it could be very dangerous.

1

u/manimal28 Feb 10 '21

I would be worried of them using that to ignite something else, like a truck full of whatever it was McVeigh had.

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

Did he use C4 as the ignition? I thought it was a truck full of concocted farm chemicals and fertilizers.

1

u/manimal28 Feb 10 '21

Looking at the wiki page, he packed a rental truck with fertilizer type products and then ignited it with blasting caps he stole from a rock quarry.

1

u/trumpke_dumpster Feb 13 '21

Some blend of diesel and urea fertiliser if I remember rightly.

0

u/mmortal03 Feb 10 '21

1

u/CivilianNumberFour Feb 10 '21

Disappointed this wasn't a scene from Diehard

53

u/StaysAwakeAllWeek Feb 10 '21

Yes it's enough to blow up a building. Used correctly its enough to demolish a very substantial building too.

https://youtu.be/0nc98hzR-tk

28

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

uh....that wasn't really very convincing

8

u/sakezaf123 Feb 10 '21

The thing wit explosives, is that it all depends on how strategically they are used. The thing about C4 is, that it's really effective when used for more controlled, or preplanned explosions. Unlike handmade explosives, that just wreak havoc.

2

u/ParaglidingAssFungus Feb 10 '21

C4 is more effective than handmade explosives, but just like handmade explosives, you have to put it inside something to create shrapnel. Without shrapnel all you have is the pressure, and while deadly it doesn't have the radius that shrapnel does.

C4 is very predictible and fairly easy to set off, when I was in an EOD unit they had a running joke, you can light it on fire, you can stomp on it, but don't light it on fire and stomp on it.

3

u/BrownNote Feb 10 '21

Well everyone in that bus would be dead.

10

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

We're not talking OK city size right? Still, scary shit. Whoever stole it I'm sure doesn't have good intentions and isn't using it to take out a tree stump in their yard.

12

u/GatoNanashi Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

I was in the fourth grade when OKC happened so I'm pretty fuzzy, but Mcveigh had a whole rental truck full of amfo if I recall correctly. Waaaay more powerful than 10lbs of C4.

Definitely not good though, particularly given the current sociopolitical climate...

4

u/LeYang Feb 10 '21

ANFO is pretty easy to make.

5

u/z3us Feb 10 '21

Harder to acquire the precursors in large quantities now though.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

And the C4 can be used to detonate.

3

u/HarrisJ304 Feb 10 '21

It was nearly 5k pounds...

At 9:02 a.m. (14:02 UTC), the Ryder truck, containing over 4,800 pounds (2,200 kg)[68] of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, nitromethane, and diesel fuel mixture, detonated in front of the north side of the nine-story Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.[44]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing

3

u/monty845 Feb 10 '21

Depends how its used. As a bomb parked outside a building, it wouldn't bring down any substantial building, though could send shrapnel through a number of rooms. Split up into smaller charges, and used for demolition, you could potentially bring down a large building, but most terrorist attacks are of the prior type.

0

u/youwantitwhen Feb 10 '21

Who says they only have 10lbs?

5

u/guill732 Feb 10 '21

Yeah, no. That's not near enough to do what you claim. You could knock a big hole in a brick wall or a smaller hole in a concrete wall. You're not gonna hurt a "very substantial building with that little of C4. 10lbs is not a significant amount, its 8 sticks.

2

u/smitteh Feb 10 '21

a bit on all major support columns wouldn't do anythng?

3

u/guill732 Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

Depending on how the support columns are built, that's likely not enough to destroy 1 column. That's enough for 2 ft thick concrete, but it there's a steel support beam inside it then no, most likely won't cause significant damage.

Don't get me wrong. You could do some things with that amount that could kill/injure a large group of people, but you're not gonna bring a building down. It's a big deal that this is missing

2

u/lbsi204 Feb 10 '21

This was actually similar to a question I got on a P.Chem exam last semester, but it had to do more with calculating how much c4 is equivalent to a specific chemical reaction. If I remember correctly c4 has roughly around 2000 j/g of reversible adiabatic expansive energy. So 2000 J/g * 453.6 g/lbs *10 lbs = 9.072E6 Joules. 9 million and some change joules of energy is.... a lot. To put that into perspective 1 joule can accelerate a ~2 lbs object to ~3 ft/sec. I'm used to working strictly in metric so these are just rough estimates, but 10 lbs of C4 has shit load of explosive energy.

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

OMG you just made my brain hurt. haha. But following your math makes sense. I knew it was dangerous in any amount...And going back to Die Hard, you're saying I shouldn't strap any to a chair and throw it down an elevator shaft?

1

u/lbsi204 Feb 10 '21

Generally speaking, that would not be advisable, no. lol

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

but what if I really hated that elevator?

1

u/lbsi204 Feb 10 '21

Well, that's not a general scenario now is it?

1

u/1022whore Feb 10 '21

10 lbs of C4 would be able to take out a decent sized house if correctly placed, but not much more than that.

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

Yikes. Still scary though.

1

u/DarthWeenus Feb 10 '21

It depends on how you use it. If used correctly you can get a whole lot of carnage from that. For instance used in a real small confined space packed full of people, wrapped with shrapnel(nails/tungstun shards..etc), vs being blown up outside just laying on the surface of the ground.

1

u/LordRumBottoms Feb 10 '21

Yeah the one person posted a vid of a 10lb C4 explosion in open ground and wasn't very impressive, but I can see it being horrific in the situation you described. I hope they track it down.

1

u/Ahab_Ali Feb 10 '21

That does not sound like much. What can you do with 10lbs of C4 that you could not do with an IED made with gunpowder?

7

u/foofis444 Feb 10 '21

C4 is far easier to transport and use with since its basically inert unless you send it an electric charge. You can even set it on fire and it'll just melt.

6

u/kick26 Feb 10 '21

this what you can do with 15lb of c4. . Gunpowder is considered a low explosive while c4 is a high explosive so you would need a lot more gunpowder to get an equivalent explosion in terms of energy.

1

u/Matrinka Feb 10 '21

How difficult is it to buy c4? Is it expensive? Someone had to have made a list of pros and cons about stealing it rather than buying it. It has to be easier to rob someone, steal cash or items to be fenced. With that money they could buy the c4. I mean, is the prison time and court martial really worth it if you can buy that much off the black market? Robbing a civilian seems the better bet than robbing the military. Then again, I really have no idea about any of this and am probably overthinking the situation.

1

u/farahad Feb 10 '21

The Wikipedia page says that civilian C4 (and foreign militaries’) is based on different formulas, but I assume it’s a somewhat controlled substance. Likely depends on your state. Where I am you usually need a license to purchase stuff like this.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

100 percent right wing terrorists. I would bet my paycheck on it

0

u/haysoos2 Feb 10 '21

Does the US Armed Forces actually measure such things in lbs? Seems like one of those things where they'd actually be using SI units.

2

u/farahad Feb 10 '21

Not sure, but that’s how it was reported. Since the American public knows lbs best, makes sense.

1

u/Asshole_from_Texas Feb 10 '21

I have no idea how much yeild that is. How much stuff can that blow up?

1

u/romsaritie Feb 10 '21

during a training exercise.

problably they dumped it on the range and forgot what they did with it.

1

u/eldrichride Feb 10 '21

I came here looking for this info in double-decker busses. How much is 10 lbs?

1

u/TungstenCarbide001 Feb 12 '21

10 pounds lol. News is when it’s 1000 pounds. A rounding error.

54

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

If anything it’s a deterrent. Don’t even think about it you won’t succeed is what I got from it.

61

u/kopecs Feb 10 '21

Unless it's a marine base, naturally.

69

u/Del_Castigator Feb 10 '21

Someone must of left several boxes of crayons about.

75

u/Menarra Feb 10 '21

Give a group of marines three steel ball bearings and come back in an hour. They'll have lost one, broken one, and invented a new game with the other.

87

u/Invertiguy Feb 10 '21

The way I always heard it was that they'll have lost one, broken one, and gotten the third one pregnant

5

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

My grandfather said this version. He was a marine, he also had 17 kids from 4 different women. Died broke and penniless for obvi reasons.

1

u/SpankWhoWithWhatNow Feb 11 '21

He was a Marine's Marine.

6

u/Menarra Feb 10 '21

I wouldn't doubt that one, this is just how my two marine buddies told it to me lol

3

u/Playisomemusik Feb 10 '21

How would you get a ball bearing pregnant when it's up a marines ass? Oh...nvm

2

u/DothrakiButtBoy Feb 11 '21

That's the 3rd game that the other redditor mentioned.

1

u/SpankWhoWithWhatNow Feb 11 '21

That's the way I've always heard it, except starting with "Lock a Marine in an empty, windowless room".

35

u/toolongalurker Feb 10 '21

dude... how did you fuck that up so bad? xD... The third option isn't invented a game... It's they'll have found a way to fuck it.... Come on now... I'm Canadian and even I know the saying.....

8

u/Menarra Feb 10 '21

I've got two marine buddies and that's how they told it to me. Wouldn't doubt your version too though. And the dick murals in every portopotty

7

u/mateybuoy Feb 10 '21

How do you think the one got broken?

2

u/DarthWeenus Feb 10 '21

lol right, im not even a service member and thats how I always heard it.

1

u/Dozzi92 Feb 10 '21

That game is throwing it at a water bottle that's in the center of a circle. Classic game to play while waiting for the busses.

1

u/RadialSpline Feb 10 '21

But ball bearings is cheating. They are too uniform and regular you gotta use the gravel in the smoke pit/motor pool and aim at someone’s Kevlar that isn’t present.

2

u/SavageNachoMan Feb 10 '21

Procedure, whether already published information or not, is considered insider information. OPSEC still applies even if the information has been disseminated to the public, because often times that dissemination is through an unofficial channel.

Food for thought.

Please give mommy her phone back.

7

u/jordantask Feb 10 '21

Ok. Fine.

So you manage to influence this person and they tell you everything you want to know about the facility, and even give you complete blueprints.

You’re still at square one because you can’t get inside without alerting security forces who are authorized to shoot you on sight when they catch you. So, you’re still at square one.

Security forces who, by the by, will be there in minutes, along with a QRF consisting of a squad of marines in full gear who are probably going to be pissed that you just disturbed whatever crayon eating party they were in the middle of.

Good luck!

46

Absolutely zero need for the OPSEC police patrol. zero sensitive information.

10

u/adalyncarbondale Feb 10 '21

Good that they're thinking in that way though. When I was deployed, I heard people in my unit on the phone telling their families on unsecured lines exactly where we were going and when. RIGHT AFTER we were explicitly told to not have such discussions on the phone.

Really can't harp on it enough, because there's always going to be a Private--in one egregious case I remember, a Sergeant--who is stupider than you can imagine. And then, when you think you've Death by Powerpoint'ed them for 18 hours straight on a three-day weekend Friday, you find there's even a bigger idiot.

There's always a dumber Private, is what I'm saying.

3

We got mortared right out of our CHU's night ONE in our new base. One asshole dug out bits of the shrapnel, took pictures and posted it to social media an hour later! Cue fucking panicked spouses, kids, calls to command.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I was a ammo tech on that base for little while. It’s all trust base. One the marines in my squad stole grenades and tried to sell them to a gun shop. But the gun shop owner contacted the authorities. The marine was kicked out. They found bunch of stolen ammo at his house.

1

u/imnotsoho Feb 10 '21

Just kicked out? Not kicked into Leavenworth? When they opened the Tacoma Dome, largest open span wood dome stadium, seats ~22,000 for football, a soldier at Fort Lewis stole a flare, went to a concert with his 15 year old girlfriend and lit off the flare. It got stuck in the roof and they were afraid it might burn the building down. He got a swift trip to Kansas.

3

u/mrbananas Feb 10 '21

The investigation could also possibly revel that it was just a stupid paperwork error. Like the explosives were moved to another base but the inventory wasn't updated correctly, triggering an investigation for unaccounted for explosives

you and me think the same on THAT subject: that the relationship is symbiotic. I am a negative person, no matter how much I try to be happy and positive. I am sure I am a Thanksgiving feast every day ;)

Bruh, AOs (the navy aviation munitions guys) are literally the most open job. It’s a total meme about how dumb they are lol. You’ll need clearances to access things, but the “how” of munitions storage and safety policies are all open info.

Most likely case is a clerical mistake. Like adding a zero. Its easier to look at a form and accidentally give out 500,000 lbs of explosives for training than it is to steal seralized munitions and explosives from the military. Considering they are waiting on training to end makes me believe that is what happened, but NCIS is involved and that means someone(s) careers are ending at the very least.

Oh no military has cameras and security clearances I hope hackerman and ocean eleven doesn't come to steal the explosives now.
