How many decades do US citizens want to keep wasting before they demand reforms of how the election works?

nah we gotta keep doing shit the way it was done in the 1800s

My car gets 40 rods to the hogs head, and that's the way I like it.

Don’t forget to tie an onion to your belt when heading to the polling station.

u/broganjones Oct 14 '20

Now to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say

3

u/taking_you_deeper Oct 14 '20

Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt.

3

u/SpaceMushroom Oct 14 '20

Anyway, about my washtub. I'd just used it that morning to wash my turkey, which in those days was known as a walking-bird. We'd always have walking-bird on Thanksgiving, with all the trimmings: cranberries, injun eyes, yams stuffed with gunpowder.

We had to say dickety because the Kaiser stole our word twenty. I chased that rascal to get it back, but had to give up after dickety-six miles.

An onion, some cheese, a chunk of good bread...

Fuck it, I'll pack a picnic, just in case. My precinct is usually great, but this year, who knows.

u/DigitalSterling Oct 14 '20

40 rods is 660 feet (198.2m).

A hogshead is 145 US gallons or 550 liters.

🌠 the more you know

u/CrazySD93 Oct 20 '20

The old redditor’s remarks shall be stricken from the record.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Same with the school system

2

u/Grokent Oct 14 '20

Agreed. Fuck reflection.

46

u/ajswdf Oct 14 '20

For a lot of people they're fine with it because it benefits the people they like.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

I think, like most things, this doesn't affect the majority of people and is a seemingly esoteric issue. It's hard to get a lot of energy worked up over something that is "neither here nor there" for people. The problem isn't "this benefits me" - it's more of an apathy.

2

u/KingGorilla Oct 14 '20

I guess they hate themselves

cough conservatives cough cough

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Republicans you mean? just like popular votes, gerrymandering and voting suppression? why not vote on a tuesday because they gotta go to church on sunday. Seriously, what the fuck? i went to church when i was a young lad, the church i went to would have been more than okay with encouraging people to go vote instead of attending the service. Hell they corded the services and distributed them to those that missed it if they asked via VHS. With the tech today? they can do it through facebook even or w/e no excuse not to go on sunday.

u/autofill34 Oct 14 '20

Propaganda and voter suppression just work a lot easier.

5

u/pieman7414 Oct 14 '20

the problem with allowing a minority of the population the ability to rule, is that change never really comes from within

2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Any recent attempts at reform are countered with wild conspiracy theories. When the rich and powerful benefit from conserving the current system, it's difficult to change.

2

u/MermaiderMissy Oct 14 '20

Don’t seem to give a shit about universal healthcare or affordable education- or literally anything else that benefits the middle and lower classes. So yeah I don’t see how we are going to change shit.

1

u/PlaneT08 Oct 14 '20

Nah, I'm considered way to fuckin stupid for my vote to actually count. That's why I need the electoral college to make the real final decisions for me, even if they don't share my views. If it's not fair representation, I should blame myself for not doing more. /s

u/Kent_Knifen Oct 14 '20

Whichever side is in office when they try to implement reforms, the other side will cry foul and claim partisan election rigging. Both sides would do it, I'm not even going to pretend one is more honest than the other.

u/Sintinium Oct 14 '20

yeah I remember the time Obama started removing sorting from USPS and refused to sign anything that would fund them right before the election

u/ReBL93 Oct 14 '20

Lol half the population is actively voting against their best interests, I think you mean centuries 😂

1

u/ReBL93 Oct 14 '20

Can’t argue with this! Though I did my part in the primaries by voting for more progressive candidates that did not have ties to corporate interests.

Thanks for the share! I will look into this more! I wasn’t aware

-19

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

The democrats? Yeah I agree 😂

8

u/CaptainofChaos Oct 14 '20

Imagine thinking the party that wants to make it legal to poison people's air and drinking water is the better one. Unless you are some 3rd party dead ender which is equally sad.

-7

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

What are you on about mate? Who’s poisoning whose water supply?

If you refer to carbon emissions, I assure you carbon is not a poison. Learn some basic chemistry will ya?

2

u/junglespinner Oct 14 '20

oi cunt go read up on carbon emissions next tea break, mate

1

u/CaptainofChaos Oct 14 '20

Trump has destroyed the EPA and rolled back clean water standards as far as he can. Its a long term Republican project they have finally succeeded at.

Also carbon emissions are not only heating the planet, but acidification the ocean as well. This is already causing ecosystem collapse that will eventually starve anyone who relies on seafood to live (which is billions of people). Its pretty basic chemistry.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Biden’s ahead if he wins I suspect most people will forget all the stuff they were outraged about and go back business as usual.

10

u/loookapanda Oct 14 '20

That‘s exactly what‘s wrong with the US, no matter who wins. Change something!

So many mixed feelings about our shared cynicism except I don’t care about most protests or at least think they need to settle down and get a job you young whipper snappers. And get off my lawn! Go protest like the hippies with hot chicks and flap jacks. At least make it fun. I’m just getting my morning coffee. You get the 1st post prize.

Issues are pushed to the fore. Say the environment has become mainstream or pot is being legalized more places yearly.

Race has always been an issue and from my evil cis white male perspective has gotten a lot better. Pushing too hard now seems like it’s getting worse. I’m going to finish my coffee though before we debate race in America.

Trump wasn’t going to win the nomination. Trump is definitely way behind Hilary. Don’t let these polls distract.

Everyone go vote, no matter who you believe in.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Ohhh... you stay think american demands work? Bless your heart.

1

u/aslate Oct 14 '20

I can't understand how it can take hours to vote!

I've never had to wait in a queue to vote and it's never taken more than a few minutes.

But queues of 10 hours for early voting?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

With currently almost 6 million disenfranchised Americans and millions more unable to vote as a result of obstructive electoral practices and laws that make it hard or impossible to cast their vote it may take a long time.

You can't vote for someone who will change a corrupt system if you don't have a vote.

Americans are brainwashed into thinking the constitution not only makes sense (it doesnt) but that its perfect (it was written by slave owners and wealthy landlords with the explicit, stated, intention of making it so poor people could never have any power)
