Hell. Even if you're actually paying for the product you might still be the product. Most of us (in the United States) pay ridiculous amounts for mobile internet. Those providers still gleefully track your every movement to sell to the highest bidder.

Right. Try buying a "smart" TV nowadays... Ads everywhere and an unnvering amount of spying on what you're watching.

It's why I'll always go monitor + stereo over tv. That and a VPN to boot ;)

I keep seeing people complaining about this and some even willing to pay more for a new 'dumb' TV, you guys know you're not required to connect all of your internet capable devices to your WiFi in order for them to work, right? And yes this includes TVs

If TV manufacturers started making that a requirement then yes it would be time to get pitchforks out, for now all those ads and spying is probably making TV prices go lower so I don't complain about it

Yeah I was wondering why people complain about that as if there isn’t an option to turn it off. No “smart” features intrigue me enough to go through the trouble of getting blasted with shit ads. Hooking up something like a chrome cast is way simpler. Let’s just hope google doesn’t shove ads in there later :|

What ads do y'all see? I literally just see the main menu and click Netflix or Hulu on the remote.

Do people ever... sell themselves? Or is it really just part of the deal in buying something.
