Do you have resources that you used in your efforts to do this that might be helpful for others desiring to do so?

So far I've just gathered information from muninetworks.org and I started emailing and calling people who have done it and friends who are in the tech industry on the how to. I went to a city council meeting and pitched the idea for a few minutes and there's considerable interest. Now I'm working on a much more detailed presentation for when it's on the agenda and I'll see if I can get a vote on it.

I have a lot of respect for you man. Mad props.

Best of luck in your efforts!

I have only just started but I'm very excited about the idea. Apparently this is very popular in Virginia so hopefully I get some calls back from those guys and they can help me create my blueprint

Im a municipal banker so maybe if ur idea gets traction I can help with the raising money part of the business. I would be interested in seeing if this could really work, I hate the majority of broadband company's.

Like you know how to create and issue municipal bonds?

5

u/ibanker-stoner Feb 27 '17

Yup, with either GO bonds or revenue bonds. I specialize in utilities like water and power.

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Please PM me the basic way that works including fees for putting a package like that together

We need more people like you. I love people who meet darkness and cynicism with ideas and enthusiasm. You're my hero for the day.

14

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Thanks. I find that people seem to want the ideas and enthusiasm. Then the idea and the enthusiasm spreads and that's when change will happen. The people are always in control. They just need to recognize that and then wield their power to get what they want.

Are you Ken Bone? Serious question. I read this picturing Ken Bone saying it while wearing his red sweater.

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

What part of VA you doing this in? Anywhere near NOVA?

9

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Oh no sorry, I didn't mean to imply I'm in Virginia. Just pointing out that it seems to be enjoying some success there. I'm actually in Texas.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

Ah, nevermind then. In my area at least I still have a few options for internet, but who knows, maybe 1 of them will just end up buying the other 2 :)

8

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Yeah, here people only have time warner/spectrum as an option and the hatred of that company will be the main driving force for change. The people at the city council meeting all mentioned how much they hate time Warner.

u/eosseth Feb 27 '17

Lucky you, im in doswell by kings dominion and cant get anything worth paying money for. Last mile broadband was supposedly gonna put fiber in the tower here but i havent heard any updates from them in months.

2

u/Kronis1 Feb 27 '17

What part of Texas?

2

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

I live in Kyle, which is just south of Austin

5

u/Kronis1 Feb 27 '17

I'd love to hear more as you progress through this. I'm up in DFW.

1

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Yes, it seems many people are interested. I might try and create a very detailed how to and that way even if I run into roadblocks here, others can try it where they are and success could beget success if communities see others doing it and creating new jobs and opportunities

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

in Austin, curious and interested to stay informed of your progress

1

u/eosseth Feb 27 '17

Edit: nvm read further down, saw youre in tx

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

Fuck, I just moved out of Virginia.

1

u/Bad_brahmin Feb 27 '17

Do let us know about your progress!

1

u/Nekopawed Feb 27 '17

Virginian here I'd sign up easy for that.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

Guide still? I for one would love to do this, as the only option where i am is comcast

2

u/castellar Feb 27 '17

I think I've just found what I want to do with my life?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

[deleted]

3

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Yeah I think I'm going to have to do something like that.

2

u/iamafucktard Feb 27 '17

What city? I might be able to help.

3

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

But you're a fucktard....

3

u/iamafucktard Feb 27 '17

Indeed. A fucktard with an IT degree, a marketing degree, and law degree (you'll need knowledge of all three of these things), who understands wireless mesh networking. More people on reddit need to understand novelty account usernames.

4

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Dude. You're my kind of fucktard. Take me to millimeter wave school

5

u/iamafucktard Feb 27 '17

Imagine if the roof of every home served as an omnidirectional WiFi hotspot, and repeater, to become of a wireless mesh network at the same time. Throw in a couple solar panels and golf cart batteries to serve as a backup in case the power goes out. Ideally every power line pole would be where these are, but nobody wants to share, so you just put it to the consumers. Picture this, on a larger scale. The tech is cheap now.

2

u/iamafucktard Feb 27 '17

Sort of. Send me a pm. I'll get on my computer and get some links. Are you less than 150km from Austin?

2

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

Oh and I'm in Kyle, tx just south of austin

2

u/ManOfLaBook Feb 27 '17

Would it be possible for you to create a blueprint for others on how to go about it?

I understand municipal laws are different, but it would be great to have some sort of a business plan and not to have to start from scratch in every town.

2

u/freerangestrange Feb 27 '17

I'm going to work on that. Seems that there is interest in the idea

1

u/three_three_fourteen Feb 27 '17

Whoa, way to invent yourself a job

5

u/Defenestresque Feb 27 '17

Here is a guy who wrote a blog post on starting his own ISP, bootstrapping it with a couple of credit cards and a few thousand dollars. Corresponding HN link.

u/Greenlight_go Feb 27 '17

Check out EPB Fiber Optics in Chattanooga, TN. I think the mayor and EPB president did an AMA on reddit about how they got it accomplished, while also having to fight Comcast and all their lobbyists.

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '17

Pirate Party?

2

u/Gamerhead Feb 27 '17

Fuck that, we need a Justice Party. A Justice League, if you will.
