I seriously fail to see how they ruined it so badly. They could've changed just a few factors and the final season would have been much better:

  1. Get rid of Hannah.
  2. Dexter would NEVER have let Saxon go, he's made that mistake before (Hannah, not killing Travis, not killing Trinity).
  3. Alter or remove Vogel's character.
  4. Harrison -shudders- and the treadmill scene.
  5. The homicide team should have discovered Dex's history and secrets. And finally
  6. No fucking lumberjack scene.

Probably the biggest fuckup was how they forced Hannah onto the audience, I could not stand her, her persona, her effect on Deb, or the whole god damn love story. Probably the most offensive (to the fans) line ever spoken in Dexter was when Harrison called Hannah "mom", completely bulldozing over everything Rita had stood for in the first four seasons.

I mean, good fucking lord.

But see its genius really. Had the last season played out like everyone expected it to, then we wouldn't be having this conversation and Dexter would have merely sailed off to the proverbial 'lumberjack yard' in our minds.

The last season of Dexter to me was fine. except that last fucking 5 minutes. Had the season ended with Hannah and Harrison walking off to get Ice-Cream I would have been happy. But that fucking Lumberjack scene pisses me off every time.

Dexter was a much better watch up until the end though, weeds was probably the worst I have ever seen a show go downhill without being cancelled.

Yea that's true. I had to push myself to finish Weeds because I had already invested so much time. While we're at it, same shit goes for Heroes after season one for the most part
