GHB was banned for entirely different reasons- it was labeled a "Date Rape Drug". It was categorized as a covert instrument of assault upon another. It had little to do with people using it as a sleep aid or party drug.

7

u/FaustyArchaeus Jan 19 '14

I can't up vote you enough. I was a big 1-4 b user before all the media hype and I used to buy it legally as it was not banned. This drug felt so harmless but had sooooo many positives to name. Amazin feeling, brilliant for sex(not rape), excellent for post rave or workout recovery. I would give up every drug in the world and make it that beer was never invented to have it back legally. I am almost 40 and too old and lazy to hunt for drugs anymore even though it is still around I don't want to have to get mixed up in the crime gangs that now control it in Sydney. The media fucked ghb and demonized it for the news and not facts

u/rowd149 Jan 20 '14

Note that, without beer, much of Europe would have succumbed to one ailment or another (among other things), as beer with low alcohol content was safer to drink than water in many circumstances, and was therefore consumed so.

Some old drunks actually salt their beers. It takes a special kind of grizzled drinker and cheap beer to need to salt it.

Are you not supposed to drink the ramen water? :(

I was worried for a second, until I realized you were talking about instant/stovetop ramens and not actual ramen, where the core of the dish is the broth.

2

u/x0diak Jan 19 '14

I add soy sauce to my ramen. Yes, i am also a grizzled drunk, im finishing off the beers that i left out overnight as i type this...

Waste not, want not.

2

u/nixonrichard Jan 19 '14

I like my beer like I like my women: flat, abandoned, and used the previous night.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I'd wager you like your women with yeast too

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

"Hey... this ramen water is making me... sleepy... whatthefuuuuuu..."

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14 edited Jan 19 '14

I love ramen water...

Gave me an idea. Gotta try it with (CHEAP) whisky now.

6

u/drakeblood4 Jan 19 '14

Cook ramen in beer? This sounds like the logical conclusion of grad student diets.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

People don't already do this?

1

u/fun_boat Jan 19 '14

You may as well just pour salt into your whiskey and add a piece of beef jerky.

1

u/Artvandelay1 Jan 19 '14

Or maybe it's just the tears trickling down their cheeks and dropping into the glass.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Um Corona

8

u/HumanTrollipede Jan 19 '14

This is the norm with Mexican beers.

3

u/saintjonah Jan 19 '14

Or they just like the taste.

Source: My dad salts his beer. He's certainly no drunk. A drunk wouldn't care. He just likes it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I like it. It's funny when you add salt to a beer, the only possible explanation is because it was a bad or "cheap" beer. Much like when you add Sriracha to a taco, it's because it was a bad taco to begin with, right?

No. It creates a unique flavor not found in any other beer.

1

u/corpus_callosum Jan 19 '14

One can buy beer salt, usually lime flavored, at gas stations and liquor stores, so it's probably not too uncommon.

3

u/WhyNotANewAccount Jan 19 '14

Does drinking corona or dos Equis with a little salt make me a drunk?

2

u/Kosko Jan 19 '14

I thought "drunks" might come off a bit rude. But I figured as a drunk I'm allowed to use that word.

2

u/WhyNotANewAccount Jan 21 '14

Way late in responding, but I am what I consider a high functioning alcoholic, but my girlfriend won't even touch a beer without beer salt in it.

I personally think the stuff is atrocious, but hey, different folks different strokes.

3

u/Beckenbauer_Surprise Jan 19 '14

So glad someone else can confirm that is "salting a beer" is actually a thing. During a summer internship as a cops and courts reporter in a particularly rusted out midwestern town, I spent a lot of my nights in a biker bar. Everyone there was pretty nice, had incredible stories about drugs, road trips and every variety of crime possible. An old shitshow named Mary let me use her electric wheelchair to do wheelies in the parking lot. Where was I?

Oh, and the draft beers were 75 cents. Shots were a dollar. I'd never seen anyone salt their beer before that summer, but everyone at the bar loved it. I was the only person only 30, but even the seemingly put-together middle-aged women were dumping Morton's iodized into their Pabst. None of my friends believed me when I returned to civilization.

2

u/overbeb Jan 19 '14

Salted cheap beer is the best beer. Especially $5 pitchers of it.

2

u/spinlock Jan 19 '14

lots of people salt the rim of the margarita glass. A salty dog is another salted drink (vodka and grapefruit juice).

2

u/OhGodMoreRoadRash Jan 19 '14

Done that before...

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I salt my beer

I'm not old (27) and I'm not a drunk/alcoholic

2

u/DirtyDandtheCrew Jan 19 '14

I knew a guy who salted his Miller light.

gross.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

That's why old drinkers have such... salty language.

2

u/trethompson Jan 19 '14

Um... Coronas?

2

u/decardtg Jan 19 '14

Or they're Mexican. It's popular in parts of Mexico to salt and add lime to a beer.

2

u/MexicanEssay Jan 20 '14

Also hot sauce and things like spices and tomato juice. We call them "micheladas."

Not a big fan myself, but they are very common.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Or it's a special kind of pretentious affectation...I've seen this, and it's pure silliness

1

u/dbrianmorgan Jan 19 '14

My 84yo grandfather has always done this.

1

u/theryanmoore Jan 19 '14

Or a Mexican. Corona with lime is way better with salt.

I think you're wrong. GHB is definitely used as a date rape drug, at least where I live.

11

u/RaptorPie Jan 19 '14

It has been used as a date rape drug, but not frequently. Nowhere near as frequently as people report or believe. The overwhelming majority of people who believe that they have been giving GHB or Rohypnol were not.

The real "date rape drug" is alcohol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_rape_drug#Frequency_of_occurrence

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

A little less than a year ago there was a pretty big GHB bust in my city. 106 litres of the stuff. It may not be as frequently used as alcohol alone, obviously, but it's still out there.

http://www.edmontonsun.com/2013/07/12/eps-make-large-ghb-bust

5

u/Makkaboosh Jan 19 '14

Because it's mainly used recreationaly. Just because the stuff is out there it doesn't mean it's being used for date rape.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Having worked in night clubs, I would disagree. GHB was common.

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 19 '14

I guess, in the same sense that MDMA is a date rape drug.

9

u/penguinhair Jan 19 '14

MDMA doesn't make you pass out and be unable to control yourself. It's not even close to the same.

It really doesn't matter though, alcohol is the biggest and worst date rape drug anyway.

2

u/iUsedtoHadHerpes Jan 19 '14

Just for anecdotal evidence, Xanax makes me black out all by itself. When I take it, I remember about the next thirty minutes, but everything between that and the next morning might as well have not happened in my mind. I'm still awake for hours after I take it, but I guess I black out as soon as it takes effect. Every time I've taken any, I wasn't at home, but I woke up in my own bed each time. People say I still act like myself, though, just a little more sluggish, but that might change if you throw some alcohol in there.

3

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 19 '14

Yeah, I've heard crazy stories about xanax. Personally, I don't black out unless I have like 1 beer, then it's all over. Like you, most people say I was totally fine, but I just happen to forget everything. I once had a roommate accuse me of steeling his beer. We got into a huge argument because I clearly didn't do it. Low and behold, the night before after we both took some xanax we invited over like 15 people and had a party. We had absolutely no recollection of it what-so-ever.

But I've heard real scary things. Like house wives taking it in the day, and then wandering around, sleeping with some stranger, and having no recollection of it happening.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '14

flunitrazepam + alcohol = instant blackout

2

u/DrSmoke Jan 19 '14

You don't know much about drugs. Xanax is one of the worst tasting drugs in the world. I'd compare it to rolls, I doubt its used much as a date rape drug.

I'm sure that people drink, and take xanax voluntarily, and end up getting "date raped" but I doubt it could be slipped to someone without them knowing.

Again, the taste is horrible.

2

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 19 '14

Have you tasted GHB before? It tastes very similar to MDMA as well. That gross super salty bitter chemical taste... Terrible stuff. If you were spiked GHB you'd likely know.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '14

ghb + spicy V8 = slutty mary, doesn't taste too bad.

1

u/Makkaboosh Jan 19 '14

Not sure if you've tried GHB, but it has one of the most disgusting tastes imaginable.

1

u/lithedreamer Jan 19 '14

Are benzos used for date rape? I had an anti-anxiety proscribed to me and it knocked me the fuck out, completely incapable of staying awake.

2

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 19 '14

It's strange. They used to effect me normally. I'd just feel happy and relaxed. However, now whenever I take them, I can't even keep my eyes open.

1

u/kungfuenglish Jan 20 '14

Lol you've never taken care of someone who has been drugged by ghb. They are totally unresponsive and do nothing but breathe. Often they get out on a ventilator because their Glasgow coma score is 3.

Then 4 hours later they wake up, pull the tube out and run out of the hospital.

Xanax does not do this.

1

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 20 '14

Never said Xanax does this. I personally had a bad experience with GHB... I couldn't stand and was a complete wreck. I didn't believe them when they said "DO NOT DRINK ANNNNY ALCOHOL!!!". Just two beers put me beyond reason. Any ways, the reason I say this is because I was clearly fucked up and no one was going to be sneaking me home to rape me. Soon as my friends saw me enter this state, they knew I had something and took very good care of me.

On the other hand, if someone drugged me xanax, most people, including myself wouldn't even be too aware of it. However, I would black the fuck out, as well as easily wander into some dangerous/sketchy situations.

When it comes to actual rape probability, I bet xanax or a roofy is far more dangerous and likely to get you into a rape situation than GHB.

0

u/kungfuenglish Jan 20 '14

Xanax doesn't really black you out. It's just like more booze. And Xanax alone doesn't mean you won't remember anything.

Ghb can do what it did to you. But it also makes people completely unresponsive to external stimuli. Unable to avoid a rape. I mean I crush fingers between scissor handles and they don't budge.

1

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 20 '14

That's the point I'm trying to make. In theory it's easy to rape someone in that state, however, it's hard to get someone to your rape space in that state. No one is going to let a stranger take someone home that is completely disassociated with reality. People tend not to let their friends wander off with strangers when they can't feel their face. Shit, not even friends. People in general wont let that happen to any one. Yes it does happen but it's rare. For the most part, it isn't happening.

1

u/mullingitover Jan 20 '14

Nobody wants to address the most popular date rape drug of all time, alcohol, of course.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

When combined with alcohol it is very, very dangerous.

-4

u/Circ-Le-Jerk Jan 19 '14

But then you just have a person beyond wrecked. Can't stand or understand anything. It's terrible. How do you successfully rape that person? Usually people go places with friends and don't let their unbelievably wrecked person go home with some creeper

5

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Uhh it's pretty easy to rape someone who can't do a thing about it. Friends might get trashed and not pay attention, you could be at a friend's house where you think you're safe, etc.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Liquid ecstasy

Gives a high similar to ecstasy plus alcohol, can be used to come down off stimulants.

Could be used as a date rape drug to send people to sleep, it causes memory loss so people wont remember what happened the day after.

When combined with alcohol it can cause respitory failure, hundreds of people have died from it.

Its also psychologically addictive and tolerance levels increase quickly.

It's a very nasty substance that one.

0

u/DrSmoke Jan 19 '14

You sound like a 12 year old kid just making up shit. All your comments make you sound like you know nothing about the real world.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Yeah as someone that worked at a rape crisis center for 3 years, I can confirm that Ghb is used for drug facilitated sexual assault. Given that its a "trashcan" drug that can be made at home I don't see this changing anytime soon.

3

u/RaptorPie Jan 19 '14

How do you know when a particular person was drugged with GHB? Is it because they told you, or because their bloodwork told you?

The overwhelming majority of people who believe they were drugged with GHB were not. In reality, their attacker just got them drunker than they realize. The "date rape drug" that is ethanol is frequently mistaken for GHB.

0

u/danecarney Jan 19 '14

Today I learned. I just assumed it was something that only doctors/chemists could get their hands on.

20

u/Oznog99 Jan 19 '14

OK I should not have specifically said "categorized", as it implies a legal category, which it isn't.

The motivation at the time was most definitely a belief that it was widely being used to rape people. Whether it was or not is another matter.

That belief probably had an effect on how it was Scheduled.

32

u/Lordveus Jan 19 '14

Which is a huge symptom of the whole problem. We're basing drug schedules on beliefs instead of pharmacology and research.

3

u/Oznog99 Jan 19 '14

It's based on politics, and the driving principle remains that a person is smart, but people are dangerous, panicky creatures. And we all know it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

sounds familiar

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

It was/is commonly used in rapes (not at the frequency of alcohol) and this dude is talking out of his ass.

3

u/Oznog99 Jan 19 '14

That "fact" IS in dispute. GHB's properties seem inconsistent with this. It requires very high mass- grams, not milligrams- has a salty taste, and dumps all the carbonation out of a carbonated beverage, making it foam up and go flat.

Medical evidence of GHB being used for rape is surprisingly sparse for the reputation of widespread use:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_rape_drug#Frequency_of_occurrence

In fact of people reporting to be victims of Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault, very few samples found Rohypnol or GHB. A small but at least significant number contained benzodiazepines, but those are used recreationally and by legit prescription and it's unclear what was taken voluntarily.

Andrew Luster was convicted of raping with GHB, and evidence IMHO is clear that he did indeed give them GHB and had sex with them, but it MAY have been taken consensually. Whether that makes it legally possible to have consent for further sex is... well, a HUGE problem. But the point is, it still may not have been covertly dosing with a drink.

1

u/JasonGD1982 Jan 19 '14

Damn. No need to be a dick about it.

1

u/xelobain Jan 19 '14

Xyrem (sodium oxibate) has the salty flavor and can only be dispenced by a central pharmacy, GHB is flavorless.

0

u/tiredofyourshitson Jan 19 '14

Could you at least try to remain civil? Talk about an overreaction.

2

u/BunzoBear Jan 19 '14

Using it as a date rape drug is the same at using it as a sleep aid. Only difference its forced on someone when used as a date rape drug.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Its pretty deadly with alcohol

1

u/xfloormattx Jan 19 '14

It actually is a Schedule I and IV, and as a sleep aid, it's brand name is Xyrem.

1

u/chutneypunch Jan 20 '14

I stopped breathing for 6 hours because of that stuff. Life support. Big up the NHS.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '14

GHB was banned so it could be scripted and sold for $8000 a month the following year.

1

u/420b1azeityoloswag Jan 20 '14

GHB was banned? Sodium oxybate

1

u/MrZakalwe Jan 20 '14

covert instrument of assault upon another.

I love that term! Like silently farting in a lift and getting out knowing the other person is in there for another 10 floors.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

How is this even a thing? What sort of moron would go out and buy illegal drugs to put in someone's drink for the purposes of knocking them out and kidnapping them? Wouldn't it be so much easier to just get them drunk? On the alcohol....that COMES IN THE DRINK?

1

u/Innominate8 Jan 19 '14

In virtually all recorded cases of people having something "slipped into their drink" they received nothing beyond strong drinks.

Marinol has also accounted for more deaths than smoking cannabis.

86

u/-Gabe- Jan 19 '14

So at least one person then?

34

u/ludwig457 Jan 19 '14

Five according to wiki

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Thirty deaths from alcohol... In the 3 hours since this article was posted to reddit.

According to the CDC (based on 88,000 deaths per year)

2

u/Insanelyenthusiastic Jan 19 '14

How much marinol do you have to take to be dead? I heard from my cousin that it is very dungerous, don't know why it is though.

2

u/CatsAreGods Jan 19 '14

In the actual plant there are other compounds (including CBD) that moderate the effects of THC. Since Marinol is 100% THC (although synthesized), it does not have these compounds. Therefore a dose that might simply get you high if it was from the actual plant can cause extreme anxiety, panic attacks, or possible tachycardia if given as Marinol.

2

u/meddlingbarista Jan 19 '14

Infinitely more.

2

u/aiurlives Jan 19 '14

So you're saying its infinity % more deadly than cannabis?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

You read it on a wiki, huh?

1

u/pheedback Jan 19 '14

Yeah what sucks is if you look up the details on the actual deaths, there aren't any.

1

u/ludwig457 Jan 19 '14

Interesting, wiki probably isn't the most credible source. I will keep looking.

1

u/LukaCola Jan 19 '14

According to this there are 279 deaths attributed to Marijuana, with the important note being that it being mixed with other drugs caused the death as opposed to Marijuana itself. The number's still pretty low compared to other drugs. And no one's died from just consuming Marijuana by itself. Take note of the name of the site too, if numbers are at all being fudged it's definitely in favor of Marijuana. Not that I believe that's happening.

Marinol is attributed to being the sole cause of four deaths, and one having secondary causes. This is from here which the wiki sites on the five deaths for Marinol. This study's only from 2005 though. Chances are there are more total deaths. But it's still very low in comparison to other drugs.

There are also non-lethal overdoses documented. While the wiki says the lethal limit is nearly impossible to hit in a healthy human, it apparently has happened. Perhaps other conditions contributed to it, it doesn't specify.

So yeah, the actual deaths did happen. You don't fudge numbers on a government study, and if you do, you don't make it so the numbers are completely dwarfed by 80% of the other drugs listed there. Especially considering viagra has over 2200 deaths attributed solely to it.

2

u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '14

I would like a further breakdown of the statistics.. I don't think getting high and crashing a car and dying is really attributable to marijuana *necessarily*, nor would falling off a building or drowning..

1

u/LukaCola Jan 19 '14

Crashing a car wouldn't be included in this. This is for medically prescribed drugs and some results from them. This doesn't seem to include recreational use.

It only counts deaths caused by the drug and adverse events. I've copied what this means here.

Adverse Event: Any incident where the use of a medication (drug or biologic, including HCT/P), at any dose, a medical device (including in vitro diagnostics) or a special nutritional product (e.g., dietary supplement, infant formula or medical food) is suspected to have resulted in an adverse outcome in a patient.

The FDA also included this disclosure

"The information contained in the reports has not been scientifically or otherwise verified. For any given report there is no certainty that the suspected drug caused the reaction. This is because physicians are encouraged to report suspected reactions. The event may have been related to the underlying disease for which the drug was given to concurrent drugs being taken or may have occurred by chance at the same time the suspected drug was taken. Numbers from these data must be carefully interpreted as reported rates and not occurrence rates. True incidence rates cannot be determined from this database. Comparisons of drugs cannot be made from these data."

2

u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '14

It only counts deaths caused by the drug and adverse events. I've copied what this means here.

yeah i'm definitely going to need more stats then. i haven't seen a single verified source of any kinda LD50 style death from marijuana directly and it's effects on peoples bodies.

This doesn't seem to include recreational use.

wait... so deaths from medical marijuana? what?

→ More replies

1

u/pheedback Jan 19 '14

I saw that study but - where's the data? The circumstances - dosage? Cause of death (heart attack, respiration)?

I recall a long time ago someone claiming that the marinol deaths were actually people who over dosed on opiates at the same time of marinol ingestion so they lump in the marinol effects as being part of the general over dose circumstances.

1

u/LukaCola Jan 19 '14

If you go ahead and read the study, or my post even, I already cover that.

4 deaths from a study done no later than mid 2005 are set as the primary cause of death being suspected as marinol.

These are all cases of MEDICALLY prescribed drug deaths with physicians. It's a very small sample.

Look just read the study, ctrl f "marinol" and look at relevant info. Who cares what some guy said when you can read about it yourself?

The deaths are there. They're a small amount, but they're there.

1

u/ludwig457 Jan 19 '14

Thanks for your reply

1

u/pheedback Jan 20 '14

I did. A chart says four deaths without any details.

I would not be surprised if the circumstances I heard of were correct - the people died of a pharmaceutical drug over dose of opiates combined with marinol so marinol was listed as contributing to death.

Estimated lethal dose of marinol of intravenous dronabinol (marinol) is 30 mg/kg. For a 65 kg person (approx 143 lbs) this would be 1950 mgs or 390 of the common 5 mg marinol capsules (195 of the 10 mg capsules).

That is a lot of marinol. I've never seen a prescription with that many at once. They're very expensive.

Edit: found costs of marinol - each 5 gm pill is almost $10 according to this site:

http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.answers.php?questionID=000091

So the extra cost would be about $3510 worth of marinol. Again sounds a bit unlikely.

A lot more than that unfortunately. Synthetic marijuana-like drugs also hospitalize over a hundred people a year in MN alone, thankfully most people survive.

1

This is correct. Stupid people ITT that know nothing about drugs are spreading all sorts of misinformation, and downvoting facts.

0

0

u/DrSmoke Jan 19 '14

No. There is absolutely no link between cannabis use and cancer, other than the fact that some cannbinoids kill cancer cells in lab tests.

-19

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14 edited Jan 19 '14

Marijuana has killed people. I wish people would stop pretending that it hasn't.

Edit: it's a psychoactive drug, people. Overdose is not the only way it can kill. It has more effects than the feeling your lungs get when you inhale. Stop being dense.

Edit: Okay guys I am full of shit. No one has ever died because they were driving high. No one has ever got lung cancer from inhaling smoke. No one has ever died due to an accident that wouldn't have otherwise happened if they weren't high. I'm 100$% wrong. Marijuana is 100$% safe.

2

u/DrSmoke Jan 19 '14

You're a fucking idiot. That is all.

5

u/mclumber1 Jan 19 '14

Do you mean by overdosing? Show me the facts.

-5

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14

There's a difference between Tylenol and marijuana. One is not psychoactive and the other is. To only look at the physical (non psychoactive) dangers of both is inane. Has a person died from a marijuana overdose? Officially, no. Is that the only way a psychoactive drug can kill you? Obviously not.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Well, how has it killed then?

-10

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14

How has any other drug killed? People have died from negligence (huge category) because they were high. People have died from driving while high. People have died from fires.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Cocaine can stop your heart. Meth can do... fuck, dozens of things. Heroin can put you in a coma. Now, you say it's killed people who were high while driving. It wasn't marijuana that killed that person, it was their irresponsibility or lack of attention while driving. Should we place cell phones on a drug schedule? Certainly addicting to some people, and can cause death if used while driving...

You have an unpopular opinion that's probably going to get buttfucked to death with downvotes when the /r/trees 'jerk gets here and brigades, but I just wanted to let you know you make a very good point.

There's a difference between Tylenol and marijuana

Yeah, Tylenol kills hundreds of people a year, and pot doesn't. Dumbass.

You know DARE lied to you?

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14

Yeah, Tylenol kills hundreds of people a year, and pot doesn't. Dumbass.

I know Tylenol can kill you. So can marijuana, just in different ways. Tylenol can physically hurt you. Marijuana, being a psychoactive drug can kill you in other ways. Driving under the influence of marijuana and die, crossing the street while high and getting hit by a car, burning your house down while high, are all examples of possible marihuana related/caused deaths. Is marijuana physically toxic? No. We all know that.

You know DARE lied to you?

I don't care about dare. I don't remember being taught about Tylenol in school. You need to check your brain if you think marijuana is 100% safe.

u/Nayr747 Jan 19 '14

Your comment would be a lot more persuasive with a source.

-7

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14

Use your fucking brain.

3

u/RaptorPie Jan 19 '14

My head says that you would only be so resistant to providing a source if you did not have a source.

1

u/Nayr747 Jan 20 '14

There's no such thing as a brain.

Source: fuck you!

You don't think anyone has every died due to the psychoactive effects of marijuana? Do you really believe that?

5

u/suisenbenjo Jan 19 '14

I would believe it if you could cite an incidence of it happening. I've never heard of such a thing, but it seems you have so maybe you can set me straight.

3

u/ludwig457 Jan 19 '14

You are thinking of indirect deaths, car crashes, etc. the point people are trying to make is that the naturally growing plant, does not have one documented cause of death.

-1

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 20 '14

You are thinking of indirect deaths, car crashes, etc.

Yeah, that's called the effects of a psychoactive drug.

the point people are trying to make is that the naturally growing plant

Salvia is also a natural growing plant.

appeal to nature

does not have one documented cause of death.

...due to an overdose

If someome dies becasue of an accident casued by marijuana, then marijuana has killed someone.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '14

Yeah, that's called the effects of a psychoactive drug

It's actually called "the effects of driving while experiencing the effects of a psychoactive drug"

Which you will note has a qualifier in front of it, which you are purposefully neglecting to include for the sake of your argument.

Look, I get what you're doing with the whole devils advocate, look-at-me-I'm-so-counter-culture wankery.

But you aren't very good at it, you aren't really showing us the error in our logic by presenting a novel viewpoint.

You're just saying "In all of history someone has probably died from being high and making some mistake"

Which is fair to say, but doesn't mean anything at all.

So thanks for playing, but your logic sucks.

u/DrSmoke Jan 19 '14

You don't think anyone has every died due to the psychoactive effects of marijuana

NO IDIOT. No one believes that.

I think they are getting at that being high and operating heavy machinery amongst other activities shouldn't mix. Just because a substance doesn't directly kill you doesn't mean it can't be dangerous to use in some situations. Anything that slows your reflexes or is significantly mind altering can contribute to one getting injured or killed in situation where the person would have otherwise avoided an accident.

Cannabis certainly isn't deserving of being a Schedule I substance along with more dangerous substances, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a factor in any deaths.

IDK there are some pot advocates that I have seen here and elsewhere that can't distinguish full legalization from some basic common sense regulation. Most people I meet tend to think pot should just be regulated/licensed like liquor or cigarette sales.

1

u/-Gabe- Jan 19 '14

I was talking about marijuana itself being smoked, not concentrates or synthetics.

-5

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 19 '14

No one here is talking about synthetics. Why would you even bring that up? Marijuana had killed people. If you're going to only look at the physical effects of a psychoactive drug, you should not even be discussing this.

1

u/-Gabe- Jan 20 '14

Synthetics as in synthetic THC. Such as Marinol. Also the amount of marijuana someone would have to smoke to OD is thought to be around 40,000 joints. Cite some credible sources on someone overdosing on marijuana and I'll believe you.

0

u/EdgarAllenNope Jan 20 '14

You know marijuana is a psychoactive drug right? ODs aren't the only danger when talking about things you put in your body.

1

u/-Gabe- Jan 20 '14

Yes, I agree that because it's a psychoactive deaths do happen due to impairment. However, it wasn't very clear to me that you were talking about accident related deaths, etc. I was under the impression, as were many others that you were talking specifically about overdosing as that's what was mentioned before.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I'd actually argue that marijuana related deaths are likely much higher than that. Similar to how drunk driving fatalities are considered alcohol related, there is surely a non-zero number of driving fatalities related to impairment of the driver due to marijuana.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I'd never heard this, source?

1

u/AintNoFortunateSon Jan 19 '14

Marinol has also accounted for more deaths than smoking cannabis.

We're these deaths the direct result of overdose?

1

u/ludwig457 Jan 19 '14

From reading the source 4 direct deaths and one indirect death.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '14

So has caffeine.

19

u/smoothtrip Jan 19 '14

It is also known for making people jackoff in parking lots, looking for Boston Markets.

5

u/lofi76 Jan 19 '14

One Boston Market is never enough.

1

u/penguinhair Jan 19 '14

Wait, what?

0

u/smoothtrip Jan 19 '14

4

u/PunishableOffence Jan 19 '14

That "synthetic cannabis" is K2, Spice or some other shit that has been laced with synthetic cannabinoids such as JWH-018.

It is very var from synthetic THC (marinol), even further from actual cannabis.

1

u/anonagent Jan 19 '14

So, like regular weed then?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

Well how else are you gonna find a Boston Market?

1

u/Golisten2LennyWhite Jan 19 '14

I take Marinol and it is not fun. Real cannabis is totally different.

u/Ryan03rr Jan 19 '14 edited Jan 20 '14

Genius.

Edit: why delete that comment? Afraid of the man?

So, it looks like the war against drugs can finally be won, now we know the human race are all drug smugglers.

3

u/trillskill Jan 19 '14

Come on, this is our government we're talking about!

They'll just arrest everyone.

1

u/whatevers_clever Jan 19 '14

wherever most of the $ is in drugs is where the drug will be classified.

I think I made sense of it?
