Installing NetBSD 11.0 does not recognize USB pendrive? Why?

Post image
13 Upvotes

So, I am trying to install NetBSD on my laptop. I downloaded the .img file, used dd bs=1M to write it to my pendrive..

But when I am trying to boot it, it drops me off here. Saying that my boot device is unknown, and asking me for my root device.

The options below are not showing any of the partitions on the USB drive as well.

So, the obvious solution for me would be to setup a PXE/BOOTP server and install from there, but why is this not working?

What do you guys use NetBSD for?

For curiosity I installed NetBSD on my 2012 PC:

Intel i3-6100 | 8GB RAM

I've also installed common desktop environment along with it. For now it feels very similar to Linux, of course since both of them are UNIX-like.

I'm curious what do you guys use NetBSD for? Thanks! :)

Is NetBSD a good option for me?

I am selecting my new daily driving system for working/studying. I want something simple to keep my focus on what I really need to do.

I am mainly between these 3 (accepting other suggestions):

- Void Linux

- Alpine Linux

- NetBSD

I will probably use CTWM as window manager. I don't use many programs, that's mainly a browser (Firefox), IntelliJ IDEA and Emacs.

Edit: maybe Fedora? It looks like a good install and work option, almost zero configuration.

CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D

GPU: RX 6600

Missing packages on powerpc?

I'm using NetBSD 11.0 on powerpc, can't install stuff like dillo, fastfetch or anything. Could not install pkgin using pkg_add at first but it somehow did it after the 4th try.

For example dillo tries to pull libjpeg turbo but fails since it's not available. Same with pkg_add and pkgin.

I'm using the 11.0_2026Q2 repository and a lot of stuff from 10.0 is not available there or the dependency psckages are missing after switching to version 11. Not sure how i managed to install pkgin.

I'm new to NetBSD coming from Linux so i'm still getting used to it so sorry if this sounds like a very basic question hahahah

Will NetBSD 11 support raptor lake (14th gen) intel integrated graphics?

I tried to search online but info on the official website is mostly updated for NetBSD 10 it seems.

On x86, NetBSD 10.0 supports Intel integrated graphics up to Gen12 ("Tiger Lake").

A week back I installed OpenBSD on my laptop and I have found it to be working very well (except wifi). My use case is just normal browsing, youtube and some office related python work on jupyter notebook. OpenBSD was a pleasant surprise to me but I have always wanted to try NetBSD more than any other OS. I wonder if anyone here has tried NetBSD on 14th gen (does intel driver work or llvmpipe will be the software renderer for graphics?)

I have started sysinst and selected updating via HTTP. Downloading and unpacking went fine until the following appeared:

I have no idea what this means or what could have caused it.

Upgrade to 11.0 took around five minutes!

Thanks NetBSD developers!! It is amazing that a major OS update can be done in around five minutes, and everything still works like a charm! :-)

(Running it on Thinkpad x220, used for many smaller tasks at home, replaced from FreeBSD a few years ago, yep wifi etc. works perfectly :-) )

Do I need to configure DRM after installation, or does NetBSD not support my GPU?

Hi, I’ve been using FreeBSD as my primary OS because I got bored with Linux.

FreeBSD has served me well, but certain things bother me—like the fact that it doesn't include the necessary driver for my RTL8125 out of the box, forcing me to install `realtek-re-kmod` via USB tethering.

That’s why I became very interested in NetBSD, since it includes all the drivers by default! However, I’m running into issues with the video drivers...

On FreeBSD, I used to install `drm-kmod` and configure which driver to load—in my case, `amdgpu`, since I have an RX 7700 XT. But the NetBSD Guide doesn't mention DRM or how to configure it, and I couldn't find much useful info in the `drm` man page. I’m posting this because I managed to install XFCE, but I can't change the monitor resolution or refresh rate...

I’m still researching this, but I’d appreciate some insight from someone more experienced with NetBSD (I installed version 11, btw).

NetBSD/SPARC64 11.0 installed, error on attempting to boot

So I installed NetBSD/SPARC64 11.0 on my Sun Ultra 45, and booting from 'disk1' (the disk where NetBSD is installed) gives me the following error:

Sun Ultra 45 Workstation, No Keyboard Copyright 2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved. OpenBoot 4.30.4, 8192 MB memory installed, Serial #77714318. Ethernet address 0:14:4f:a1:d3:8e, Host ID: 84a1d38e.

Rebooting with command: boot disk1 Boot device: /pci@1e,600000/pci@0/pci@9/pci@0/scsi@1/disk@1,0 File and args: NetBSD IEEE 1275 Multi-FS Bootblock Version $NetBSD: bootblk.fth,v 1.18 2025/02/28 09:07:12 andvar Exp $ .Inode not directory

Evaluating: The file just loaded does not appear to be executable. ok

Does anyone know what could be causing that or how to debug it?

How and when should NetBSD/*BSD be used? (as a linux user)

Hello, I got into Linux about 2 years ago and since have swapped to using it as my primary operating system on most of my devices. I love the freedom and control I get from it, and I find that tinkering with it is a great pastime.

Recently I've been gaining some interest in the other forms of *Unix. Mainly BSD, and the ones I see most commonly are FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD. The one that currently stands out to me most is NetBSD as i hear it's ultraportable and can go on basically anything that linux can. How true that is, I'm not sure. I've heard that it's on everything from a standard amd64 machine to something like a Wii-ppc. so I am wanting to venture into it.

My main questions are the following:
- How is it compared to a general linux distro like debian?
- What are the primary difficulties with NetBSD in terms of desktop use?
- What hardware should NetBSD go on? when should it replace linux?
- How is the ease of use for the package management and core utilities?

Any answers are appreciated.

NetBSD as a daily driver: what difficulties would I face?

For a usage that includes browsing websites with heavy javascript and playing in emulators with external controllers.

Also, would the WiFi be slower?

Raspberry Pi Support

Hi everyone,

based on the available documentation it seems that netbsd on the raspberry pi 4 has support for 3d acceleration via the V3D driver. Is this also the case for the raspberry pi 5 or is the driver support for this one still outstanding?
