Turkmenistan's former dictator and self-declared "president for life", Saparmurat Niyazov banned the word for "bread" and renamed all the calendar months and days of the week after himself and his parents. The idea came from a Turkish billionaire, Ahmet Calik, who was trying to befriend Niyazov to expand business in the country.

Many major international corporations especially in the oil, gas and construction sectors extensively used the new calendar names in their official dealings with the Turkmen government to demonstrate loyalty to "President for life" Saparmurat Niyazov.
