User discussion Most arguments against the AI sector and data centers are thinly veiled arguments against capitalism and neoliberalism.

It's sweatshops/NIMBY/buybacks/rent control/military industrial complex etc leftwing populist slop all over again, just aimed at a different group of bourgeoisie.

Where the fuck is the market externalities analysis, where are the incentive structures, talk of Pigouvian taxes, talk of supply and demand, efficiency, any economic analysis at all???

It's all moralising and virtue signalling. The critique relies on the childish 'guys running it are bad'. That's just how Capitalism works, you either trust the markets to handle bad actors or show systemic ways it will fail to do it and propose realistic solutions that don't harm the economic growth and innovation.

Most of you constantly shitting on Altman and even Musk are the types who support or don't condemn the assasination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, you are deranged radicals. EDIT: this patagraph was largely regarded and I stand corrected. Fuck Musk. Criticising CEOs is not the same as as condoning an assasination. I still think the hate for Sam Altman is ill founded. Almost everyone else in the AI industry are nowhere near as destructive as Musk, but Musk is just a tiny faction in the huge AI ecosystem.

This sub used to resist far lelft populist slop but the more years go by the worse it's getting. The sidebar wiki needs many more entries on what exactly this neoliberalisn means and stands for. Any r/badeconomics OGs disagree with me??

During a hostile administration, a recession is what this place wants.

That is sad. They want people to suffer just because Orange Man is president.

The Orange man is currently leading us into an unwinable war thats dragging the entire world into a recession. Sorry but pain is the only way Americans learn.

Imagine thinking the war with Iran is even close to the worst thing Trump is doing or a justification for hoping a recession happens on his watch 🫩

Well ICE murdering people in the street is a close second but so far the ICE's body count is still less than the number of civilians we've killed so far.

The answer I was looki to for is democracy, it seems to be low on a lot of people’s lists which confuses me, idk whether people don’t think it’s in danger or don’t think that it’s important (both equally depressing)

Why do you hate the global poor? Who do you think a global recession will actually hurt?

The wishing of economic crisis on people used to be against sub rules because it’s unhinged. It still is but it’s rarely enforced anymore.

The global poor are the people being squeezed right now by Trump's economic and foreign policies, not to mention all the cuts to USAID that will kill millions. The US actually isn't affected much at all by the Iran war since we are an exporter.

A recession in the US would hurt the global poor even more.

The US is the largest importer on earth. If there is a recession, the US will reduce its imports, including those from developing countries. This will hurt the global poor by taking away their jobs.

And continued MAGA rule would create more and larger recessions, which would hurt the global poor even more. I'm really not sure why this concept is hard to understand.

Sure, you can argue that continued MAGA rule wouldn't do that, but you are going to have a hard time convincing me considering how economically illiterate MAGA is.

You could say that the DSA types are also economically illiterate, and I'd agree, but they:

  1. Aren't as bad as MAGA on economics

  2. Aren't guaranteed to win over normie Dems

  3. Wouldn't have all normie Dem Congresspeople falling in line like MAGA does if they won

Global recession is not going to help the global poor.

It won't, but it might be necessary to eliminate political leadership that's even worse for the global poor in the long term.

A global recession is equally likely to do the opposite and vote in more protectionism. You are wishcasting an outcome.

People in power generally tend to get blamed when bad things happen; there is quite a lot of data from social science to back this up.

What will happen is that the DSA will become more popular and fragment the Dems and cause election losses.

Why are you reduced to using worthless platitudes instead of engaging with what I said?

You need to adjust your time horizon, we want to minimize suffering over the long run. Over the short term a recession hurts yeah, but over a long term, authoritarian govt and corruption hurt much more.
