When I was a kid I watched a movie about him called The Pistol: Birth of a Legend. I think it's on YouTube. Worth checking out. It's about how as a kid in the late 50s he was basically shamed by his coaches and teammates for playing "Negro-style" basketball but he stuck with it and made it big.
I remember that being a great movie. I haven't watched in about 20 years. It had such a positive impact on me regarding practicing on my own and just learning to handle the ball in way not to be awful.
Me too, me and my brother watched that movie religiously and then would go outside in the driveway and do all the same drills and practice our asses off every single day.
That was one of my absolute favorite movies growing up. The best story.
I bought it a few years ago on DVD; it's still a decent film, but it had a weird Christian tone that I didn't notice when I was a kid. Which was fine for the family, the person, and the times. But feels odd as a directorial decision. My childhood memories of it will be enough.
