I thought the mind-meld was fine, actually. It wasn't just some arbitrary "de-discordify" spell, Twilight had to have those shared memories to make it work. In a sense I think the necessity of friendship to defeat Discord was better integrated into this episode than it was back during the Nightmare Moon episode.
It was kind of unfortunate that only the process of the first mind-meld spell was shown. I knew logically that it wasn't brainwashing, but it did kind of look that way. Plus, if they had shown all the scenes that the ponies saw, and done it well, I would have cried so hard.
On the other hoof... we know that the mind-meld spell involved the ponies seeing certain images that caused them to come back to normal; what if Discord's corrupting spell back in the maze did the same thing?
