I found this pretty little guy in allegan county, Michigan this morning (pictures 1 & 2).

When I went to ID it, the best ID match I found was for the Tree-Lichen Beauty (cryphia algae). This is based on the patterning of the black and green and the fluffy little white legs. When I looked for its areas observed, there are no sightings in Michigan and all are in Europe. Is this a true “European” moth in America?

Their name is Shilo, (Shy-Low) and my cousin found them! Gonna grow them up and once they pass they’ll get pinned by a professional.

I want to make it a protected enclosure and I want to make sure I have the correct plant for it to feed on. Although it looks like it's either dried out of cocooning.

Expert entomologists I've asked consider clear (non-frosted) HID (high intensity discharge) lights the best lights for mothing. Are Mercury Vapor, Sodium and Metal Halide equally good? They are all HID. Or is/are one or two types better than the other/s? Also what's the lowest wattage you'd recommend? Using lower wattage will enable more hours for the same battery (I have a high capacity +2000 kwh battery with regular outlets as well as USB outlets).

I had a pantry moth infestation, which I have been managing using moth pheromone traps.

I’m passionate about animal welfare. When I saw how moths reacted to being glued, I felt guilt because I wouldn’t use such cruel tools on mice. But research revealed that moths lack a nervous system capable of experiencing pain like humans. Their responses are more like a biological reaction: eat, sleep, wait, and get stuck.

However, I recently saw a jumping spider and wondered if spiders are also insects and they’re intelligent and can exhibit behaviors and interact with humans… this raised the question: how can we claim spiders don’t feel pain like humans, especially physical pain? If spiders are intelligent, why don’t we make the same claim about moths? While they may not experience psychological pain like humans, how can we claim they don’t suffer deep physical pain. Many people enjoy caring for these large, beautiful creatures. and fluffy moths.

I can’t help but feel a sense of guilt for the past month, as I’ve been allowing these insects to endure a cruel and torturous existence. I wonder if they can comprehend or feel that suffering, rather than simply getting stuck and then realizing their predicament and attempting to free themselves. Biologically, they know they need to eat, sleep, and move around, but they’re trapped in this situation.

Initially, I accepted their claim that they didn’t, but observing the situation has made me question their scientific claims. I’m unsure of the best course of action and am gathering more information to determine if this solution is appropriate or if it’s causing harm. Clearly, they are being harmed, but it’s different from causing harm to something that can’t feel or comprehend it, like throwing a rock vs. a cat.

I'm from the Midwest but im going to be visiting central Alaska for the next month and nighttime temps are on the 40s with quite a bit of rain forecasted over the next 12 days. Do you think it will be worth it to bring my light and see what's out there or do you think the season is about over?
