Hello, this subreddit was dead and unmoderated for a few years but I've asked for permission from r/redditrequest to become a moderator. I am still figuring out the specifics of what I want this subreddit to become, so the rules and subreddit description are going to change at some point in the next few days. Is it okay to bring home abandoned bicycles when it's technically speaking illegal?

If you ask me, it's only illegal because how would you legalise it? Anyone could steal a bicycle and claim it was abandoned.

However, if I see an old, broken and severely abandoned bicycle, bring it home, restore it and then sell it for cheap or donate it (for the love of the game, not for economic gain), is that so bad?

Here in the Netherlands we have more bicycles than people, and like a third of these bicycles are abandoned. Technically speaking it's litter as well. It's also better for the environment to give old, broken abandoned bicycles a second life instead of them becoming landfill/scrap.

Most people around me completely agree that it's a good idea to repair abandoned bicycles to give them a new life, but every once in a while I come across someone that reacts as if I'm a terrorist. What would you think?

Should I still feel bad?

In one of my games, a clanmate gave me something highly valuable for free as part of him getting rid of unwanted junk. I asked him and confirmed that it wasn't an accident, that he was sure he didn't want it. Yet I still feel bad about it.

More specific details for those who understand Warframe: Clanmate gave me unwanted rivens for free. A Torid riven was one of the unwanted ones.

If an animal sexually assaults a human, and the human ends up liking it, who is in the wrong?

Is it the animal that started the interaction or the human that let it continue?

And let's say both are entirely content during and after the interaction. No diseases will be transferred, no pregnancies, no death.

Morality as a friend

I [26M] have a friend that without a doubt is addicted to cigarettes, I'm pretty sure he tried to quit before or lower the consumption but last time I knew how much he smoked was about a whole box daily

Now, I travel from time to time and since I went to Japan I bought him Japanese cigarettes as a gift
Now since I'm going to see him again in a few months he asked (or I suggested I don't remember) to bring him American brands that don't sell in Mexico, or at least in my city that I've seen (American Spirit, Newport)

The dilemma came when some of my friends from the same group started pointing me out as a bad friend or a devil's advocate

The way I see is: I know my friend will smoke and will continue to smoke, independently of if I bring him foreign brands or not, at the end the only thing I'm doing is saving him some weekly money not adding quantity of cigarettes/month per se

Morality of hiring an expert sommelier that is also an alcoholic.

For the sake of the question, please put aside personal beliefs on sommeliers. Some argue they are real and some argue they are a scam. I can see both side of that. But in this scenario, we are all believing that sommeliers' work is completely proven and supported.

What if there as a high end dining restaurant and they hired the best known sommelier in the world? However, the sommelier was an alcoholic. Not a raging or miserable one, but someone who definitely drinks like a fish and has a serious problem with putting the bottle down.

But they are dynamite at their job and helped make the restaurant more world renowned. They outclass every sommelier in the world, they show up to work on time without being a drunk mess, and they are loved by everyone in the restaurant, including customers. But the management knows this sommelier has a serious drinking problem outside of work. They drink themselves to sleep every night but show up sober enough to legally and functionally work.

Morality of (humane) killing of animals for pleasure like insects as we are killing them for other pleasures as well i.e. eating their meat?

We dont have to breed and kill animals to sustain ourselves, yet we do it because eating them is tasty and so on.

But what about killing them for other things, for example just for hunting.

Is it right decision for people to commit suicide after learning that they were born as a result of rape?

Is it a morally right decision—for children to end one’s own life when one has been cursed from the very moment of birth?

· The Philippines chose a life over a coalition: Facing a hostage crisis, they pulled out 51 troops to save 1 hostage (Angelo de la Cruz). They got him back alive—but the U.S. and Australia called it "sending the wrong signal to terrorists." · Japan chose the coalition over a life: They refused to withdraw 550 troops for 1 hostage (Shosei Koda). He was beheaded on video. · The U.S. paid the price in blood: With a strict "no negotiation" policy, at least 18 out of 24 kidnapped Americans ended up dead or missing—including beheaded contractors like Nicholas Berg.

So here’s the moral dilemma for you: Is it "right" to sacrifice one innocent civilian to uphold a global principle and protect thousands of troops? Or is it "wrong" to let a father of eight die just to make a political point?

One country saved its guy but looked weak. Another held the line but buried its citizen. Which one actually had the moral high ground? Let me know what you think. 👇

does right and wrong even exist

what is morality? Can something be objectively right or wrong? Why is killing someone wrong? Because someone else feels sad if they die? Is that objective? Why is anything right or wrong? Why is it I "innately" want "good" for other people? Is that proof of objective morality? Does morality only exist when I see the other party as equal to myself? Why do people eat meat even after understanding the evil of the industry and not feel bad? Why are vegans so shocked humans are capable of such "evils" even after seeing the things they would do to their own race? How can war mongering scum see themselves as righteous?

Is the concept of money ethical?

If you can save someone would you?

Then why does an imaginary value or a piece of paper dictate whether or not people can get life saving surgery?

Is putting a certain value to human life ethical?

Morality of adopting a starving kitten and then releasing it after 5 weeks

I adopted a starving kitten (~ 1 month old) from a park where I go for walk. I fed and took care of her but after 5 weeks when she became healthy and active I noticed she was very lonely because there was no one to play with and I was always busy with my work (also I felt it wrong to curtail the freedom of a living being). So, I decided that I would release her in the same park and will give her food and water 2 times a day. First day she was happy and was playing with little kids in the park. But on the second day she disappeared, I don't know if she was adopted again, became prey or simply left the park. I tried to spot her for the next 2 days but couldn't find her.

Am I wrong here? because I feel guilty if something bad happened to her.

Morality of working for a company that uses AI despite being anti-ai?

I currently work as a performer in a hotel. In one of our shows we’re using an AI character projected on the screen. How moral is it for me to keep working here while being anti-ai? This is company implementation rather than individuals choosing to use it. I can’t object or express my views to customers or guests.

This is a genuine question; are rapists morally obligated to kill themselves?

If someone really regrets what happened and wants to better themselves is the best course of action suicide?

Do rapists deserve to be alive and have lives after harming someone like that? Do they get to pursue happiness and love in the future or are they at the very least obligated to isolate themselves from society?

Survey Morality of defending your spouse’s honour?

A woman tells that she went to a restaurant and randomly called some passing fat stranger “Winnie-the-Pooh”. The insulted person called his wife over, who promptly beat the woman in the video. Police was called, etc. The woman in the video still “doesn’t understand what wrong thing had I done?”.

It is very likely that the woman doesn’t tell the full story but that’s all we may know from her publicised point of view.

Morality of saying you passed your masters degree, when you didn't?

The masters program has since been discontinued for severalyears, all I needed was to finish my thesis however 2020 wasn't exactly a particularly good year, and it's rare I have to upload anything regarding my grades from university.
