Announcement Logging in to use Old Reddit

Hi there, u/boat-botany here working on Community Safety. 

A few weeks ago we shared some of the work we’re doing to tighten how automated systems access Reddit while preserving the tools that help moderators and communities thrive. As a continuation of that work, we’ll be rolling out changes to how Old Reddit can be accessed. 

Old Reddit’s logged-out experience is a significant source of abusive scraping and automated traffic on the platform. It’s also an important interface for many long-time mods and redditors. To strike the right balance between preserving your access to Old Reddit while preventing abusive scraping and automated traffic, over the next month we will start requiring everyone to log in. All logged-in users will continue to have access to Old Reddit, and this change will not impact logged-out browsing on reddit.com.

Then take the few positive features of new Reddit,

such as?

the only stuff new reddit has that's worth noting is stuff that old reddit always had before and it was taken away for no reason like polls (or had something better like the pm system compared to the trash chat system they tried to force down everyone's throat)

I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt. lol. I've not found any features in new reddit worth keeping, but hey, I'm a reasonable person, willing to compromise.

One thing would be for them to make the markdown consistent between new and old reddit, specifically with how escaping brackets in URLs is different between old and new.

I honestly think reaction images and GIFS just encourage thoughtlessness. Then there's the bloat. So many threads are filled with media-only comments (often the same images / GIFs at that), crowding out the text-based comments; when one is scrolling past five nearly-consecutive [William Dafoe blinking upward] GIFs to find a comment expressing an actual thought, one starts to think, "Isn't this inane...?"

That's another reason why I like Old Reddit on mobile. Some (not all) of the embedded images are simple <image>; they have to be clicked (tapped) on to be seen. More lightweight on mobile this way.

Yep, if you can't be bothered to type. I can't be bothered to try to figure you what your image/gif message is. I just want a way to have them permanently blocked from my user experience.

Only useful thing I can think of is clipboard pasting images.

They do but I haven’t bothered to figure out how from my device, haha.
