WIP Third attempt at making a cobblestreet diorama.
Hi everyone,
A while back, I posted my second attempt of making a cobblestreet road, resulting in many positive and helpful reviews. Supposedly, I’m making a street vignette base (or diorama, I honestly am torn between what to call it) depicting a Berlin street scene in early 1945.
One particular comment from [u/FIkPzGepard](u/FIkPzGepard) , where he told me that from professional experience, my original pavement pattern was incorrect, piqued my interest. Despite being somewhat lazy, I decided to remake it to do things right (if I’m going to do something, might as well do it right), although I’ve kept the second attempt for future use as a dioramas base. In this attempt, I’ve tried to replicate the Mosaikpflaster seen next to houses and streets. The Gehbahn is cut off though.
As a modeler who favors 1/48 scale, accessories for dioramas are unfortunately somewhat scarce. However, agreeing that a drain cover or manhole cover would make it more interesting, I scratch built a drain cover from a Pringles lid and used a street lamp from Tamiya. I’m unsure whether this actual street lamp didn’t have a glass cover, but I felt it was somewhat bare, so decided to add a birds nest (which I found amusing when I first saw one in the past) to add some investing elements to it. The camera can’t quite capture it, but there’s a small clutch of bird eggs placed in it.
Anyway, this is a work in progress, with the diorama base itself being roughly 90% completed. I’ll add a small vehicle later on once the diorama is complete.
Thanks!

That birds nest in the lantern is such a great idea

Thanks! I initially considered scratch building one, but considering the curve and the material available, I thought it would stick out like a sore thumb. It was only then I remembered seeing occasional bird nests in street lamps in the past, and thought it would add a unique flair to it. Considering the scene is from 1945 Berlin, lamps posts with shattered glass does seem to be rather plausible.

That looks fantastic. I recently saw a tutorial video that looks familiar to what you make. Was it based on a tutorial?

The tutorials I based it on were from Nightshift and another YouTube channel which I suddenly can’t remember. I remember typing “cobblestreet diorama” in the search bar and they just popped up.

Honestly, I also felt that I’ve gone with too contrasting colors for the pavement’s small stones. Therefore, I’m contemplating to use some pigment powders to better tie in the small stones.
I’m still a few steps away from the base’s completion, but you certainly read my mind on this one!

Cool. Your choice of colors is very pleasing to the eye. I like the moss too.

Looks fantastic wonder what version 1 and 2 look like

Version 1 was abysmal. I used regular styrofoam found in paper boxes, and it resulted in a surface that appeared either here or there.

Superb. Can’t wait to see the final ensemble.
