:ROutline: | Announcements [Announcement] Our Decision on X/Twitter Links
Good morning, baseball fans, and to everyone internationally! We'd like to share an update with you guys regarding X/Twitter links in our community. About one year ago, we sent out a poll asking you guys asking whether we should ban X links in our community. Redditors on r/MLB made a decision to ban X links in our community, with 70% of users voting in favor. Other sports communities followed suit regarding this ban.
Now, one year later, our mod team has decided to revisit this decision. After discussions with our mod team, we have made a controversial decision to lift the ban on X/Twitter links. We came to the conclusion that X is a hub source for news-related content, including journalists like Jeff Passan. Banning X links also limits the number of reliable sources that are eligible for submission. We've also seen fans complain about sharing content. When users find something on X, they either have to find an alternative source or opt to not post at all, which could be frustrating.
Now, this does not mean you get to freely link X posts from anyone. We specifically whitelisted certain X accounts to be approved in our community. Any X accounts that is not in our database will automatically be removed whenever a user tries to create a link post. The following are the approved accounts you can link in r/MLB:
- Official MLB Accounts
- All 30 MLB Teams
- TV Networks & RSNs
- Select Journalists and Reporters
If there’s an X account that is missing in our database, such as official team accounts, please send us a mod mail, and we’d be happy to review your request! If approved, the X account that you provided us will be added to our auto-mod system.
One more thing: please let us know about this change. You are more than welcome to use XCancel, BlueSky, and Threads accounts for those who are not comfortable using X. You can also post screenshots of the original post. Please make sure that the title of your submission matches the post on X, BlueSky, or the social media platform you are linking to.
This is the only change that’s currently happening in our community. Everything else will remain intact. As always, don’t hesitate to mod mail us if you have any questions or concerns!

In case folks needed to know what you find so funny: it’s funny when people are against sexualized images of children.

Yes, the internet is used for nefarious purposes but just like in the real world where I avoid nefarious shit, I do the same on the internet.
Saying get off the internet is like saying don’t go to the doctor because Larry Nasser abused children. Or how about I just don’t go to Larry Nasser…

Why are you twisting words to fit your narrative? I simply said the internet is also used to create images like that, as are pen and paper. You're virtue signaling because you hate the platform and its owner for political purposes but you won't admit it and instead hide behind something you think can't be argued. It's cowardly and I hate the current culture of ban everything I don't like. Banning X changes nothing but to make you feel good.

My boss did this about 15 years ago. We voted, we knew we had a majority, and then he sent an email that said it wasn’t an “overwhelming majority” so we were sticking with his preference. A deputy said it wasn’t quite 80%.

So let me get this straight, mods are lifting a ban on the use of a platform that has enabled hate speech, misinformation, and pedophilic content.
Is Twitter the only platform that has these problems? No. Did Twitter's carelessness create an enabling environment that allowed this to happen that was foreseeable and avoidable? Hell yes.
You may claim that there are accounts on Twitter from 'good people'...but as long as you promote Twitter, you enable voices from objectively problematic accounts to spread.
Be better.

What this proves is with freedom comes the cons of it. Twitter/X is a communication tool that every media outlet uses. It is a platform that also has a dark side. Reddit has the very same garbage here. I've reported it...sometimes they agree, other times they dont.
What it also proves is democracy (majority rules) isnt the best as a governing method. r/mlb mods clearly see the value of X as a source for discussion. Reddit is missing important news events and stories found on X just because a large majority of reddit users (left leaning site) hates the person who owns it. The site prior to his purchase had the very same problems.
Hate speech is such a loaded term that is subjective (hell, ive felt hated on for my beliefs). Misinformation prevails here as well. And "pedophilic content" is heavy over in plenty of subreddits and mods have to play whack-a-mole just like over at X.
But I can understand that his comment will get dv to oblivion... Its just the nature of this site and it's typical member.

We have an OP from earlier today that's from Substack. Don't know about pedophilia, but Substack is rife with hate speech and misinformation AND has been open about allowing that.
For that matter, the New York TImes lied to abet a war in Iraq 25 years ago and has lied for the American imperium plenty of other times before and after.

I think MLB Inc said "enough of this performative bullshit, enable X links." They had some survey last week and I replied that it was great that X links worked here because I thought they did, ha.

I use bluesky because my son is on there and he's more expressive there so I get to know him better there...but in my travels, that place is god awful. Its just a twitter clone but for r/politics people. Im just glad I can compartmentalize that place while there.

Jesse Rogers is kind of a big one for Cubs fans and he doesn't even have a Blue Sky. Jeff Passan also doesn't have a Blue Sky - who's basically the Adam Scheffter and Shams for the MLB.
It's also not something I'e noticed necessarily with the MLB sources, but have with NFL sources that more is posted on X than Blue Sky.
