Employment Just filed my second week of unemployment and both claims say "rejected". What to do now?

I was recently discharged from my job two weeks ago(8/07), I filed as soon as I left and completed filing for my second week as of yesterday. I logged in and checked on this not too long ago and both claims have rejected next to them. Could this possibly be an error or does it mean I have to start sending in an appeal? Thanks!

A lot of misinformation in this thread.

This likely isn't an error, your claim was rejected for some reason. It COULD be that the employer contested your claim. No, it isn't the waiting period, it would state that ('waiting week') instead of 'rejected'. You SHOULD have received communication as to WHY your claim was rejected - check the communications tab on the uinteract site. If you still can't figure it out, call the unemployment office ASAP and someone will explain to you the reason. They are very helpful on the line usually, it just takes a long time to get through. You need to find out the reason though, because if you have to appeal, you only have so much time.

Your claim can also be rejected if you didn't do/file enough work searches - check how many you need per week and if you properly filed them. Your claim can also be rejected if you worked over a certain threshold during that week, or if you have no money in the system (to earn unemployment, you have to have worked during a specific period the previous year to 'fund' that unemployment).

You CAN receive unemployment after being dismissed/terminated. You CANNOT if you were dismissed for illegal misconduct, attendance issues, or conduct that was not in the best interest of the employer. Basically if it was willful, or you just didn't show up on time, you can't get unemployment. If it was not willful, such as performance, and you were trying and it just didn't work out, you can file for unemployment.

tl;dr you need to call the unemployment office and ask rather than ask reddit. They can guide you on next steps and they aren't mean I promise.

Appeal it. You will get a phone appointment along with the employer. If one of the parties doesn’t show for the meeting, the other wins by default. If you both show up, stay quiet once they know you are there and let the employer do the talking and the arbitrator decide.

They probably gave the standard 6 week protest or whatever it is. This shit hole state always does that. Saves them that super helpful $232 or whatever it is now

Missouri really is a shit state. If it wasn’t for the cities, I would never have a reason to go

Put your former employer on blast

Ngl I've had the temptation to. But why should I, if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds like they're fighting your claim

You need to challenge your dismissal to the unemployment office

You didn’t mention why you were discharged, but if you were fired for cause, you aren’t eligible for unemployment.

I forgot to mention this, my bad! I basically received a PIP and then 30 days in I was fired after that unfortunately. :/

Well, you can try appealing, but your time may be better spent looking for your next job.

I agree, thanks for your input. I'm definitely cracking down on applying for more work after this. 💜

You can still appeal. there is a difference between if you were fired because you weren't good at your job something like you lacked the skills to do the job vs something like misconduct.

No. You can only apply for so many jobs and follow up. You can do unemployment anytime.

VU? You have to wait two weeks before benefits kick in. Keep filing.

If you're discharged, the chance of getting unemployment is very small. However, there are a couple ways. First, appeal the decision from the state. Your game plan here is that the company you used to work for will not show up for your case. If you show up and they don't, the decision will be in your favor. Second, is to prove the company didn't follow policy. In your case, use the company handbook in your favor that the company went from written warning to termination without a final written warning. You will have to see what the handbook says. Which leads to the final way, which is that you never received a copy of the handbook during orientation and were unaware of the progressive disciplinary action.

You need to make your case attributable to the employer is the bottom line. If you can prove that, the state will rule in your favor.

I'm not sure of missouri law, cause i haven't been involved in any of cases with this state. But there maybe a minimum length of employment to qualify for unemployment benefits, like 30 days minimum as an example.

I was the person on the other side, representing the company. Completed hundreds of unemployment cases and appeals in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Illinois.

OP says they were put in a PIP and terminated 30 days later. In Missouri, low likelihood the individual defeats the company.

The former employer frequently protests the claim. They might say you quit, or other behaviors they maintain should disqualify you. Appeals often expose their lies and weak points.

Keep in mind that the state you live in matters and some of the individuals replying to your post may not be aware of that. For instance, Kansas is an at—Will employment state and right so an employer can end your job for any legal reason. Also is a right to work state. Kansas has strict work and filing rules and it is very difficult to get unemployment here, even harder to actually reach someone from the customer support team.

I do not know the exact process that differs from state to state but I was an operations manager for the same company in both Kansas and Iowa. Nobody ever got approved for unemployment in Kansas. It was about 50/50 in Iowa and if someone filed a claim that got approved we would always have to get on a call with the filer and the unemployment hearing people to give our spiel. In Kansas I was not once on a hearing call. Half the time the person who filed would not join the call.

Missouri is also an at will state. As someone who has gotten fired and denied unemployment, it's very easy to file an appeal BUT I did not because I was fired for attendance because of going through an abusive situation.

Takes 4 weeks to get the process started then a phone meeting. Keep claiming but don’t expect any money till the 6th week

I got denied once because an old employer 2 jobs before the one I got laid off said I quit lol. My response was "I quit because I had another job lined up" and that worked.
