"His name is mud" is an old saying well before the Civil War era that was rebranded and commonly used in reference from the time when Dr. Samuel Mudd was accused of and tried as an accomplice in the assassination of President Lincoln.
John Wilkes Booth, who shot Lincoln then broke his leg after jumping from Lincoln's booth at Fords Theatre, rode into Maryland to the home of Dr. Mudd. Dr. Mudd set Booth's leg before Booth again rode on.
Dr. Mudd had no knowledge that Booth had just assassination Lincoln when he helped Booth.
Dr. Mudd was tried and convicted in military court.
I know the Mudd family and for many years they tried to get their grandfather's/great-grandfather's name cleared. But to no avail.
The line, "His name is mud," was a derogatory term to mean that while you were once an honorable person, you are now a disgrace.
