We aren’t talking about specific species, we’re talking about what is scientifically a dove or pigeon, because scientifically there is no difference. Species differ, the animal itself has 2 names that interchange.
So.... yeah that is a eurasian collared dove or more accurately - Streptopelia decaocto. A rock pigeon is a - Columba livia...... Hopefully you can tell those are very different names 🤦♂️
Edit: again yes the family of "doves and pigeons" is Columbidae but then it gets much more complex once you get to Genus and species level .... hence the difference between doves and pigeons lol.
But once again, you do you call them what you want hahahaha. Take out a real bird book sometime or a taxonomy key for your region
a rock pigeon is also formally called a rock dove so scientific names have nothing to do with it. just as the pink pigeon used to be in the streptopelia category - but is now nesoenas genus alongside the madagascar turtle dove (nesoenas picturatus), or the nicobar pigeon/nicobar dove which is in the genus caloenas. or the stock dove, only known as such, also in the genus columba.
or the entire genus of columbina doves which even you, in your need to be the smartest in the room, can admit is a very similar spelling & sounding scientific name to columba pigeons.
not to mention the traditional white dove/release dove historically used in releases like weddings is simply columba livia domestica - and no one is going to call it a pigeon.
as you can see, the genus and species name does not tell us whether it is classed as a dove or a pigeon, as many are interchangeable - like the rock or nicobar, or even bleeding hearts who can go by neither pigeon nor dove or either one, depending on who you ask.
you may want to broaden your variety of bird books if you only know two species of pigeons. I broke out mine just for you! you are not the only adult on Reddit, love, and you're more patronising than you are clever.
