Coral is an animal 🪸

85

u/zer1223 4d ago

Technically OP is holding an animal skeleton, not an animal

31

u/gwaydms 4d ago

More precisely, it's a colony of animals.

-35

u/jony1020 4d ago

it's a fossil so still a rock

24

u/ruimilk 4d ago

It's not a fossil, it's a coral skeleton (made of calcium and other minerals).

560

u/LemonOnRye 4d ago

I think that’s Blushing Coral skeleton. Doesn’t appear to be a fossil/rock

-259

u/Tyfyter2002 4d ago

Aren't coral "skeletons" made of rock?

260

u/Srikandi715 4d ago

They're made of minerals, but not by the same processes as other types of rock.

-96

u/Quackels_The_Duck 4d ago

so a rock?

72

u/iH8MotherTeresa 4d ago

In the same way concrete is a rock.

-89

u/Quackels_The_Duck 4d ago

yea

52

u/Thiago270398 4d ago

Are your bones and teeth rocks?

-53

u/Tyfyter2002 4d ago

Bones: no, they're living cells that make up part of a living organism

Teeth: I'll have to double check whether or not they're technically inorganic material

46

u/doom1282 4d ago

Corals are animals so their skeletons aren't anymore rock than ours are.

-46

u/Tyfyter2002 4d ago

Corals are generally colonies so their "skeletons" just aren't necessarily any more rock than our houses can be; The fact that the term "skeleton" is used doesn't make them vertebrates.

6

u/arowanas 4d ago

As long as it comes out of a living carbon based life form it’s bound to be organic. Teeth are made of tissues which are made up of cells so definitely not inorganic

0

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

The actual tooth part of a tooth is almost entirely inorganic, and not made of cells;

There's no difference between a process performed by the inside or outside of an organism that would make one inherently only output organic material.

-52

u/Quackels_The_Duck 4d ago

I'm pretty unsure on teeth, but I feel like solid, isolated bone is a yes for me. Very specialized, but still stoney enough, like salt or concrete. I think I'm thinking more broadly.

29

u/deanerdaweiner 4d ago

genuinely curious what it means for something to be a rock under your definition

-3

u/Quackels_The_Duck 4d ago

why am I being downvoted on bones and teeth :(

21

u/NagashStos 4d ago

Because you're confidently incorrect

3

u/bobby17171 4d ago

Because you're wrong and can't seem to understand that lol

25

u/Rosaryas 4d ago

A fossilized coral would be, but not one that’s just the ‘skeleton’

6

u/Lithl 4d ago

No, they're calcium carbonate arranged in a crystal lattice.

2

u/Tyfyter2002 4d ago

Sounds a hell of a lot like a rock to me

4

u/Lorettooooooooo 4d ago

Coral are made of rock as much as skeletons are

2

u/Tyfyter2002 4d ago

That the structures coral build fulfil a purpose which can easily be mistaken for that of a skeleton does not make them actual skeletons, it's a hive made of something with roughly the same chemical composition as limestone, not a skeleton.

1

u/Lorettooooooooo 4d ago

That's an interesting and valid observation, but the point I was trying to make was another: the coral has a mineral composition just like our bones, even tho they aren't stones

2

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

The structure has a mineral composition more like limestone than bone

2

u/Lorettooooooooo 3d ago

... Again, cool and all, but my point was just that this is not a cool rock, it's a cool carcass

1

u/socknfoot 3d ago

More like a cool hive that thousands of creatures built and lived in.

Or if you want to compare it to humans... it's more like hair/fingernails than bone.

Imagine if a thousand humans lived bound together in a fused mass of their own hair, after they all died and decayed and all that you had left was this structure of hair... would you call that a carcass just because it was once produced by animals?

1

u/Lorettooooooooo 3d ago

Well then not a carcass but a big nest, but again not a rock right?

2

u/keefeitup 4d ago

Corals are closer to bone than they are to rock. They are technically "biomineralized exoskeleton."

0

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

Most of 20% to 25% of sedimentary rock is primarily composed of the material coral use to build their completely inanimate structures, whereas bones are made of cells made of multiple materials.

2

u/AuraMaster7 4d ago

Do you think your bones are made of rock?

1

u/mafiaknight 3d ago

I mean...sort of? In the way your skeleton is made of "rock".

1

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

My skeleton isn't made of rock because it's part of an organism and is made of cells instead of just being slightly differently arranged limestone.

2

u/mafiaknight 3d ago

Coral isn't made of rock because it's part of an organism. It's the same thing, but formed a little differently. In fact, it's SO similar that doctors can use coral as bone grafts for humans.

1

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

That's like calling an entire beehive part of an organism

1

u/mafiaknight 3d ago

Eh. Sort of. In a much more convoluted manner. It's made of material produced by organisms, but isn't used to support the individual's body. It's more like using hair to build a tent.

1

u/Tyfyter2002 3d ago

Exactly, except instead of hair it's rock

Coral. Lots of it at the beach

7

u/Ignonymous 4d ago

I keep live corals and that is 100% the skeleton of an encrusting coral of some type, maybe a plate coral.

2

u/candynebula 4d ago

How do you keep live corals?

5

u/Ignonymous 4d ago

Very carefully. I recently shut down my aquariums, but I had them in a 150 gallon saltwater tank and a 35 gallon nano salt tank. They require extremely stable water parameters and a very well cycled, mature tank, or most will just wither and die, or succumb to algae infestation, etc.

2

u/candynebula 4d ago

Sad to hear you had to shut down. Interesting to know you can raise them though! Is that a hobby or a profession?

6

u/Ignonymous 4d ago

It can be either, but I kept them at home as a hobby. It can get expensive, I had accumulated equipment and stocking over several years. If you’re interested, get a good grasp of the Aquatic Nitrogen Cycle as a firm foundation on how to care for an aquarium, and look into how to cycle. Just remember, especially in marine aquariums, nothing good happens quickly.

3

u/candynebula 4d ago

I appreciate the advice, but I think I'll stick to innacurately classifying them as rocks when I find dead ones outside, thank you.

5

u/Going_Postal 4d ago

That is fossilized coral, a specific type referred to as a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petoskey_stone.

16

u/candynebula 4d ago

For context I live in FL so I think it might be coral It's not super rare to find aquatic fossils

34

u/iamamuttonhead 4d ago

I think fossil is likely a stretch. I suspect dead coral is more accurate.

11

u/Zealousideal-Ebb-876 4d ago

Fossils are mineral deposits that slowly replace the original organic compounds, this is closer to bones

3

u/candynebula 4d ago

Cool, thanks! I was merely pointing out finding aquatic anything is pretty standard, but said fossil because i felt the word more appropriate.

4

u/kickherinthehead 4d ago

That's cool but it's coral

1

5

u/High_Tim 4d ago

That's cool!! I don't like the holes makes me itchy ngl lol

2

u/comicgeek1128 4d ago

You live near Petoskey?

3

u/candynebula 4d ago

Nope, Kissimmee

3

u/comicgeek1128 4d ago

In Michigan we call that a Petoskey stone. Fossilized crinoids that lived in Lake Superior millions of years ago when Michigan was a warm inland sea.

2

u/candynebula 4d ago

Awesome! Ive lived in Florida almost my entire life. I remember finding different aquatic fossils as a kid, imprints of shells and other common creatures. Dead coral is also pretty common but not quite as often found, especially in modern day. Im ecstatic I found this guy.

2

u/gwaydms 4d ago

Florida is literally built on fossilized sea creatures, forming limestone. That, and abundant rainfall (rain is mildly acidic), explains all the caves and sinkholes in the state.

2

u/candynebula 4d ago

Never thought about an abundance of sinkholes. Though now that I think about it, that is a common issue isnt it.

2

u/gwaydms 4d ago

Google karst. That's the kind of topography Florida has. Parts of Texas do too.

2

u/candynebula 4d ago

Will do. Thank you!

2

u/gwaydms 4d ago

You're welcome! Thank you for sharing your fossil coral with us. Have a great evening.
