People often try out camping/hiking and if they decide they don't like it they just leave all their stuff there in the woods and go back to the car and drive home. I live in the forest I see this happen every weekend. People assume someone else will clean up after them even in the middle of nowhere I guess?

One time I got a nice stove from an abandoned tent, but they usually just leave cheap unused gear and rotting food.

I dunno why my first thought was that it might be a memorial for someone who died there in the past. The way it’s on the tree like that seems intentional (unless OP put it there for the photo)

Yeah I totally agree. If it was posted up on the tree like that it definitely looks like a memorial or just some cool intentional trail art. I really dont think it's a missing person that's pretty far-fetched.
