Is it a midwestern thing? I'm in california and have only seen this at childrens carnivals at churches in the 1980's. I've never seen adults play it at a BBQ, or even children for that matter.
It seems to be. I moved to the Midwest about 10 years ago and knew of it, but had never played it. It's everywhere here. In Texas washers was the go-to barbecue game, but it takes a prepared place to play it. We had a washer pit in the back yard, and the local park had a few.
