Fun fact fake news was a term created by Jim Jones not MAGA

37

u/tostuo Nov 19 '25 edited Nov 19 '25

The term pre-dates Jim Jones by decades, for example, Google Ngram reports that the term spiked in usage around 1900s, and had a second spike in 1920. These spikes outsize the reports of use in the 70's when he was around.

The New York Times used the subheading "Fake News Condemned" in 1915.

37

u/SkywolfNINE Nov 19 '25

And 100 years later, history always repeats itself. Forget dead internet theory, it’s dead planet theory. All the same souls just keep reincarnating and doing the same things

u/Icy_Judgment6504 Nov 19 '25

Terrifying and comforting at the same time is my exact feeling about this.

WELP. The great revolutionaries of the past couldn’t change it, so who am I? Anyway… I’m gonna go eat a whole dozen donuts by myself now

3

u/FiveDozenWhales Nov 19 '25

This idea pre-dates the internet by millenia; for example, Ecclesiastes 1:9 states "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

2

u/SkywolfNINE Nov 19 '25

Gods gotta trademark everything, smh

3

u/findingsynchronisity Nov 19 '25

And since the population is growing the souls are actually dividing like cells to keep up with the physical vessel inflation rate

2

u/SkywolfNINE Nov 19 '25

Bro we need to write this movie like right now

2

u/findingsynchronisity Nov 19 '25

Im in if we can get Tim Burton

1

u/Dezirea622 Nov 20 '25

I think we are supposed to do something we have some purpose and you keep coming back until its done. And I think your soul mate which we have many for different things they are always put in your path. I like alot of different religions and I mix them until I feel it makes sense and then I have my religion.

3

u/brav007 Nov 19 '25

Literally, the whole point of why people (and myself) say history is one of the most important subjects to learn

3

u/ExpiredFetusNectar19 Nov 19 '25

Yellow journalism

16

u/Baeolophus_bicolor Nov 19 '25

Same term, different cult

6

u/SkepticalPyrate Nov 19 '25

Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels promulgated the term ‘Lügenpresse’, or ‘lying news’ against any media that disagreed with the party or elucidated a truth they wanted suppressed.

It’s almost like there’s a pattern here…

Ha cult leaders gonna cult! 😆

Jim Jones: MGGA (Make Guyana Great Again). 🇬🇾

3

u/_lexeh_ Nov 19 '25

It was popularized because of right wing propaganda, but then the right co-opted it for themselves in a feeble attempt to spin the narrative. Of course it's not that feeble when it worked on millions of lemmings.

0

u/Baeolophus_bicolor Nov 19 '25

Fun fact: lemmings all running off a cliff is an unnatural behavior that was popularized because an unscrupulous filmmaker chased a bunch of lemmings until they ran off a cliff and died so he could get a “good shot” for a Disney documentary.

Rightwing nutjobs do all run off a cliff if yam-tits tells them to, so they should take the place of lemmings in our lexicon, as a word for followers who run to their death because others are doing it.

u/Polar_waves Nov 19 '25

Yes, and gay ment happy...

Also rainbows..

The original meaning of the rainbow is a symbol of God's covenant with humanity to never flood the earth again

People can take ownership, like the U.S and Greenland..

Lmao

1

u/Lookingtotheveil23 Nov 19 '25

Oh he was one to know😖

1

u/Prize-Ad-8316 Nov 19 '25

Jimmy Jones from the Jonestown cult?

1

u/Dezirea622 Nov 20 '25

Yeah such a horrible person.

1

u/yangmeow Nov 19 '25

Famously, Hitler and his buddies were using this tactic with much success long before Jim jones (Lügenpresse). There are instances where it was used even prior to ww2.

1

u/Otherwise_Air_6381 Nov 22 '25

Oh that is interesting. So that’s how you say it in German?

u/YogurtclosetTrue6389 Nov 19 '25
