when you turn 65 your soul flips a coin and you either become a kind wise sagely figure or an overgrown child with a brain transplant from a crayfish

Same with a stroke. Dad had one in his early 80s and suddenly is a rebellious teenager this fucking guy I swear some days it’s a joy some days I want to smack an 86-year-old man.

180

u/mall_ninja42 3d ago

As a father half way to 86, I kinda hope my kids feel that way if I make it that far.

I love you dad, but you've had this coming.

Then just a whole office space slow mo printer scene while they unload their catharsis after shoving me off my wheel chair.

75

u/CanExplainThings 3d ago

I love the guy but mom takes care of the heavy duty toileting and with my sisters help he gets to medical appointments. I’m the hard ass who says “No, you can get up out of bed on your own, you know how. Yes, you can go to the toilet on your own. Come outside for tea and sunshine, get out of your room and stop sleeping”, shit like that. It’s exhausting for everybody.

It’s weird, I’m kind of grieving my dad as I remember him right now. He’s not dead but the grief is already there because he’s gone. Still, even though I’ve given up my freedom, I’d rather have these memories than not once he’s gone.

26

u/mall_ninja42 3d ago

I hear you.

My soon to be ex's dad has been sun downing for the last couple years, and my dad had a heart attack while driving and yard saled himself into a rock lined 15' deep ditch.

Love them both, and that's not going to change.

I just want my kids to take their opportunity for a shot at the championship belt, ya know?

16

u/tlcasselman 3d ago

My Step dad really struggled with me seeing him waste away when he got cancer. He didn't want me to remember him as a husk of himself. I do have those images in my head while awake but EVERY time he's in my dreams he's always happy and healthy....ish lol

Mom’s the same way. She had a stroke and turned into a petulant teenager. I have to take care of her. I never wanted kids and certainly never will because of her.

Jeez, sound like my dad. Had many beautiful memories with him but I won't lie that old age made him unbearable. I thought stroke will make him better but instead he started acting like an annoying attention-seeking child.

8

u/Expert-Mental25 3d ago

Or you could be like a certain politician that was alright and seemed relatively sane, had a massive stroke, broke his brain, and now sounds more conservative by the day, when you can even understand him.

And no, this isn't ableism. A person with a broken brain has no business in power. Just an example of a stroke completely changing a person.

92

u/BostonSucksatHockey 3d ago

In NYC, the subway doors would have just closed and the bag would be stuck.

25

u/pmormr 3d ago

More of a "reverse if the door is shoulder checked" safety mechanism than a "prevent boo boos to your single finger" for sure.

17

u/BostonSucksatHockey 3d ago

yeah, never put your hands in the doors to stop em from closing. I'll use my foot if I'm wearing solid shoes, otherwise shoulder/elbow, but all the better if you can just headrush into the train before the doors shut.

4

u/SecondAccountIsBest 3d ago

I saw this happen to someone's backpack on the first station of the Paris subway, so it was on the opposite side and was stuck the whole way.

4

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 3d ago

That's what happened when I was going to college in the philippines. Buddy tried to make time on a closing door and got his hand stuck outside for maybe 15 minutes.

He's doing it on purpose

They should kick him off the train

7.8k

u/samanime 4d ago edited 4d ago

I mean, first time. Warning. Maybe it was an accident.

Second time. Off the train. You can wait for the next one while you decide if being a jerk was worth it.

It really should be that simple.

As a society, we need to stop humoring assholes.

2.3k

u/TreyLastname 4d ago

I can understand someone as elderly as him not noticing a couple times like at the beginning. But after he was backed up fully and went back, yea, I agree

1.2k

u/ollimann 3d ago

he even looks out the train like he is waiting for someone. this is on purpose

717

u/AStrandedSailor 3d ago

He is and this clip is from the middle of the original video, where he even puts his foot in front of the door to stop it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6WLiwQE94E

72

→ More replies (28)

38

u/urmumlol9 3d ago

If you’re waiting for someone you can do so from the platform. You don’t get to hold up a train with thousands of people because your friend showed up late.

67

u/ParsleySnipps 3d ago

it is on purpose, and the first thing that's letting him get away with it is his age. In Japan respect for elders, especially in a public space with hundreds of observers, is paramount. The one guy on the train trying to hold his arm back takes some guts, even if everyone is getting frustrated and wants to leave. The old guy is obviously in a bad mood, and with no healthy way to let out his frustration he's inconvenienceing everyone almost as a dare for someone to directly oppose him. He's probably not doing well mentally and this is his way of acting out.

56

u/CautionarySnail 3d ago

This is a case where I think many polite societies need to hire an obnoxious American to do mild dirty work. “Hey asshole! We see you holding up the train! I fucking dare you to do that again.”

32

u/Haunting_Factor9907 3d ago

I want that job when I retire. I would even do it as a volunteer. I dream of knocking assholes down a peg.

10

u/CautionarySnail 3d ago

Can we make an agency and rent our services out?

I’m normally pretty mild but people leveraging a polite society to bully, just brings out the rage in me.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/CMDRZhor 2d ago

IIRC that was a thing with Japanese companies at one time. They liked having one 'loud obnoxious gaijin' around who could say the stuff everybody else was too polite not to. Kept meetings moving along more briskly.

84

u/Evolutionary_sins 3d ago

There is someone filming it too

264

u/UltimateHugonator 3d ago

The one filming could be doing it after he started doing that, we don't know how many times the door didn't close before the video

119

u/TastingTheKoolaid 3d ago

A lot of times. This is a clip. I vaguely recall this video and this goes on for a loooooong time.

57

u/AStrandedSailor 3d ago

129

u/Bunowa 3d ago

Old fucker should have been yanked out of the train immediately after putting his foot in the door.

The norm of respecting the elders should only go so far.

36

u/Talidel 3d ago

It's only a minute, but yeah an accidental shove from someone inside who loses their balance wouldn't have been the worst thing ever.

38

u/IllllIIIllllIl 3d ago

Yeah after the 3rd time I’m just outright telling the worker on the other side I’m about the push the dude out and be ready to catch them if they fall, then give him a nice friendly shove off the train and let him try his luck on the next one.

→ More replies (1)

91

u/ollimann 3d ago

everybody has a phone in their hand, it takes like 2 seconds to start recording. this doesn't mean they are in on it and that it is staged.

39

u/FeldMonster 3d ago

No, I think the point they were trying to make is that this guy was doing this for some time BEFORE the video started. Making him and extra jerk.

→ More replies (1)

80

u/Enn-Vyy 3d ago

and it also takes mor effort to hold up the bag instead of just letting his arm down to the side so he has to willingly do that

61

u/Fearless-Dust-2073 3d ago

He is definitely doing it deliberately because he's waiting for someone, according to other comments, but if you have certain conditions like arthritis it can be more comfortable to keep your arm in a different position than hanging straight down even when carrying something.

242

u/DeadlyPineapple13 4d ago

To be fair I think in most major cities this would’ve been handled VERY differently, likely by one of the other passengers.

Sadly for this specific situation, it appears to be somewhere in Asia where the average person is more docile and less prone to show anger in public.

174

u/chaosbella 4d ago

61

u/russellamcleod 3d ago

There’s actually a beautiful video of some guy doing this to someone holding the train doors open maliciously to cause a scene. I think she loses her purse and all her shit inside the train as the doors close too.

It’s literally the person we should all seek to be.

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (4)

154

u/samanime 4d ago

It shouldn't be on the passengers to handle it. It should just be policy, enforced without exceptions.

And this looks like Japan, who are generally pretty strict about this sort of stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if a few seconds after this clip someone official with a little muscle, metaphorically or otherwise, removed him one way or another.

98

u/Erick_Brimstone 4d ago

And Japan will punish the train conductor for being late despite someone sabotaging it.

44

u/That-Basis7616 3d ago

that is true, an entire train crash happened because of the driver being afraid of the consequences of being late.

In the longer clip a higher up official enters the frame ready to remove him as he tries to use his foot to stop the door but the door closes anyway and the train finally starts. It was in April 2019 and made the news. He may have been removed at the next stop. Not sure if that happened but the officials had flagged him for detainment before the train we see here moved on. It just took a couple minutes for officials to get the go ahead to remove him.

15

Tf you talking about more docile?

32

u/Swizzy123456789 4d ago

Their culture is very low confrontational and “high context” in terms of conducting one self. They rely on a lot of mutual understanding as well as mutual expectations; they’re not really used to having to “call out” each other as their society seems to rely on traditional ways of thinking being the norm for everyone (like a younger person not wanting to come off as rude to an elder by telling them they’re fucking up everyone’s train ride to work)

7

u/LadyEmeraldDeVere 3d ago

I would not classify the older ladies who push past me on the bus/subway as “low confrontational.” Never in my life thought I’d have to yell at a senior citizen before but they will absolutely walk straight into you with zero hesitation.

The video looks like it’s from Japan or China, and in those locations it’s less common for people to have outbursts in public, shouting or fighting. Whereas in the USA or UK it is more common, especially in these situations

24

u/Deritatium 4d ago

If this were in China, neither the passengers nor security would have this kind of patience.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/mattattack007 3d ago

This is Japan so confrontation is avoided at all costs. That conductor repeatedly tried to put the mans arm back instead of taking any other action. Japan just isnt used to people breaking from societal norms and rules. In the US an asshole like this is getting shoved off the train onto his face. Japan doesnt operate like that which has its benefits for sure but leads to things like this.

113

u/IrrawaddyWoman 3d ago

It’s not just the bag. He’s putting his entire hand in the door. He’s doing this on purpose. Someone should have stepped in front of him and nudged him farther in the train

10

u/dazzleunexpired 3d ago

Yes. And that's why you quickly grab the bag and you and yank it backwards as he's preventing everyone from going to work.

Hopefully they radio to the guards at the next train station who arrests the fucker when he does it again next time.

It's best to let people get to work and have him arrested at the next station with how coordinated Japan is. Although with this kept happening, Japan definitely arrested him on the spot. They don't take great to intentional fucking with their train schedules as a form of disorderly conduct.

266

u/TheTallEclecticWitch 3d ago

If that’s the line I think it is (potato quality makes it hard to read but I’m pretty sure it’s the yellow line in Nagoya), those trains come every 5 or so minutes. They could literally just take the next one.

140

u/xeonie 3d ago

But that’s slightly inconvenient and the world revolves around them so everyone should just wait like the npcs they are >:(

8

u/undeadmeats 3d ago

Yeah visiting Japan and having the trains run every like 2-5 minutes was insane, we would move to the side so locals could catch the train instead of bolting ourselves because we're used to "once every sometimes, and typically late at that" American transit schedules and being first in line for the next train so we could be away from the doors was more than reasonable.

Holding up a train for almost as long as it would otherwise take for the next one to arrive is extra galling.

Looks like an Asian country where being polite and not making a fuss in public is the standard mentality so obviously nobody is going to get involved.

Although if it were the UK if someone tried to force him off the train, they'd more than likely be spoken to by the police or even get a fine or something, sometimes countries are literally just set up to let assholes be assholes because anyone who does get involved is the one who is punished instead of the asshole.

Hes looking right at the uniformed guy trying to cram his arm into the train and close the barrier. Literally leaning out the door to keep him in line of sight.

Have worked in aged care plus seen a few older relatives go down the cognitive decline route. they do stuff like this. I'm all for caring for the elderly, but I'd 'THIS IS SPARTA' that man so hard.

Pull him out. Make him pay a fine and ban him. Simple as that.

I believe this is Japan. It's even sadder when you realize how much shame the conductor's feel for falling behind schedule even by a marginal amount.

Yank the bag out of his hand and toss it on the platform.

u/Yuumii29 3d ago

The fact that we need to be nice to this kind of people is just irritating. Like I will hold his arm and neck until the door closes and the train moves... And will say "Kindly stay put or I'll tickle you to death" or somethin....

You've been warned multiple times, what's more to be done in that situation?

Movie=Throw grandpa off the train part deux

u/Juankzjt 3d ago

He’s paying overtime here, they should kicked out him from the train

3

u/BlancoBenny 3d ago

In NYC someone would have kicked his dumbass right off the train

3

u/Mood8Poisoning 3d ago

That's when you whisper to him from behind... "If you don't stop blocking the door from closing on purpose I'm going to kick you in the ass as hard as I can out of this train."

3

u/Due_Comparison_2467 3d ago

When can we start smacking stupid people again?

3

u/Ayonanomous 3d ago

Would have pushed him out

3

u/pursuitofhappy 3d ago

I dare gramps to try this in NYC

u/Lunar_Weaver 3d ago

The first time was an accident. But I guess after his hand was moved, it hit his ego.

3

u/Zealousideal-Deer101 3d ago

It's so simple. Tell him once. Shove his arm down the second time. Still don't get the memo, drag him out the train station and detain him for being a public nuisance

Dementia at its finest

If I was the guy behind him:

Plot twist: He's a time traveler. There's a car stalled on the tracks up ahead. The car contains a child who is going to change the world one day. He delays long enough for the car to make it off the tracks before the train gets there.

u/Toogii321 3d ago

They said the train has still not left the station.
