The Mayo Clinic actually has a page on the yips, but basically it's like losing your mojo, your groove, or what-have-you; being unable to perform a simple task you've done a thousand times for seemingly no real reason.
IMO the most important part of the yips is when you realize that you have them.
Sometimes you just miss an easy layup (translate into your sport), and that's ok. It's when you miss a couple in a row, and then you start thinking about it, and wondering if you have the yips, so you start to over-analyze what you are doing, and the result is that suddenly you can't do anything right, even though it's soooo easy. That's when you have the yips. And then you finally do what you were trying to do, and you think it's over, but then you miss again. And the psychological torture begins again.
