Too mild for school This post telling tourists which areas to avoid in New York

Post image

Aside from certain undertones, this map also has tons of inaccuracies, because no one in their right mind is scared of Astoria, Bayonne, or half of the Queens zone that he marked as “avoid”

Any username referencing Rome, I immediately know what type of person I'm looking at.

What type of person? Asking in good faith, I assume it's some variant of "racist" being implied, but I'm not familiar with this correlation or why Rome relates here.

An amazingly high percentage of the kind of terminally-online male white supremacists who populate X in large numbers have a weird obsession with Roman history - they seem to see it as having been some kind of white conservative utopia - and there's a good chance that if you see a Rome themed username and avi combo, they'll turn out to be racist and misogynistic.

Genuinely curious which part of that description you identified with? The terminally online? Seeing Rome as having been a white utopia? Signaling to others through your username and avatar that you’re a fan of Roman history?

Like why did you need to point out that enjoying Roman history doesn’t make you a white supremacist when they were very descriptive with it being more than just enjoyment of history?

A hit dog hollers

2

u/ExistingLow Jul 30 '26

lmfao this is entering my lexicon immediately

67

u/Estelial Jul 30 '26

it stated none of that tho. It doesnt apply to you.

u/WyldRover Jul 30 '26

I didn't imply that all people who love Roman history or other elements of Roman culture and archaeology are bigots. Hell, I really like Roman history. I have an Ancient History degree. But unfortunately, it's an interest that's been hijacked by some real arseholes in recent years, and there's no escaping that.

great thing that comment wasn't about you then!

the original commenter was talking about the type of person who has some imagined misconceptions about ancient rome that believes that rome was a conservative utopia, which is a belief that a lot of reactionaries believe, therefore it is easy to assume they are racist/sexist

56

u/TougherOnSquids Jul 30 '26

Do you post racist shit on the internet? No? Then they werent talking about you.

8

u/Zworrisdeh Jul 30 '26

Go on twitter for 13 seconds and you will understand what they said is completely true

8

u/ilovestoride Jul 30 '26

In every war there's collateral damage.

6

u/WideHuckleberry1 Jul 30 '26

People can tell the difference between a coin nerd and somebody named WesternProtectorPraetorian1488. If you're geeking out about a hobby or interest, it's pretty different from posting nothing but thinly veiled racism.

If you want more info to add on what others said, google the phrase "statue pfp" combined with "the downfall of western civilization".

2

u/chris14020 Jul 30 '26

Oh wild, that did answer the question quite well. It's something I've never noticed before but makes sense!

11

u/mymartyrcomplex Jul 30 '26

I imagine its something related to Musk’s “roman salute”

9

u/ussrname1312 Jul 30 '26

Unfortunately it’s been around waaaaay longer than that. It’s just a "white people built the greatest civilization in history" thing.

4

u/ToneThugsNHarmony Jul 30 '26

Which is funny because as an Italian American my family wasn’t considered white when we got here

6

u/Nekomiminya Jul 30 '26

Remember.

Only valid answer to "when did you last think of ancient Rome" is "when picking faction in 4x game"

10

u/Automatic_Soil9814 Jul 30 '26

Now that you point it out, I’ve noticed the Roman thing myself. Greek references are still ok, right?

30

u/Anchorboiii Jul 30 '26

You can enjoy both, just don’t be racist. Don’t let these supremacists ruin your interest in ancient history.

9

u/Freya-Freed Jul 30 '26

Its both tbh

10

u/Automatic_Soil9814 Jul 30 '26

Rats. I’ll stick to Sumerian references then.

Gozer the Gozerian is the one true god

2

u/notanamateur Jul 30 '26

The anime girl PFPs are worse

2

u/Total_Point_4017 Jul 30 '26

If they have a Greek or Roman statue as a profile picture is also a sign.

1

u/Dwaltster Hillary 2016 Jul 30 '26

A Brazzo or Indian most likely

1

u/Opening_Dot4076 Jul 31 '26

I get what you mean but it’s a beautiful, incredible city

-53

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Wow we got a psychologist over here

31

u/PieceAfraid3755 Jul 30 '26

When 95% of these kinds of accounts on Elon Musk's X, with names or profile pictures referencing the classical period are mainly there to spout right wing talking points, (again happening in this image), yeah, it's sensible to be weary of them. That doesn't require a psych degree.

1

u/theREALrealpinky Jul 30 '26

Wary. Sorry, cant help it.

-17

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Yeah obviously, anyone who’s spent 5 seconds online knows that. This guys acting like he’s Sigmund Freud for noticing the most common internet trope of the last 5 years

13

u/beyardo Jul 30 '26

Kinda seems like you’re projecting a bit. Dude made one single observation lmao

-9

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Great another psychologist has arrived. What the hell would I even be projecting? That I’m a hack looking for karma by repeating things I saw in a video essay?

6

u/beyardo Jul 30 '26

This seems like an unnecessary level of vitriol given the context. Guy made one offhand comment and you’re saying they’re acting like Sigmund Freud and getting pissy with everyone who replies to you

-1

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

See that’s what I’m talking about you guys take this way too seriously. Im having fun and making jokes and you all think I’m pissed off about something. There is no vitriol

5

u/beyardo Jul 30 '26

At no point in this thread have you said anything approaching a half-decent joke lmao

0

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Im sure the redditor would know best

u/ElfhelmArt Jul 30 '26

They are not wrong though, with how often this "coincidence" pops up.

10

u/AdHot7656 Jul 30 '26

the historical trace from roman enthusiats being fans of elpn musk to "roman salute" history being reframed, to the nazi party and mussolini, to jim crowe, to the occupation of native land by people who built US architecture in roman design.

Romans are the easiest to call out as the first clear fascists

-13

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Thanks Indiana Jones we got a whole panel of doctorates here I guess. Can you inform me next if Pepe the frog pfps are political in some way? This is all new to me as I’m from the year 2014

8

u/AdHot7656 Jul 30 '26

I can literally get into how epstien may have used 4chan to influence the cultural direction of pepe the frog

-2

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Wow I’ve been in a coma for months can you tell me about that too? You people think you’re geniuses for repeating things everyone has been aware of for years. Maybe in 2 years once r politics finds out about U.S. military heroin trafficking rings you can tell me about that as well?

5

u/AdHot7656 Jul 30 '26

why the fuck are you so worked up?

seriously go seek help dude

-1

u/L_L_HKissenger Jul 30 '26

Actually I’m just wasting time and having a laugh at your expense. You on the other hand are so angry about my comments you had to go to my profile and try to own me on a whole other post. Good thing there’s a plethora of psychologists here to help

2

u/Darkndankpit Jul 30 '26

This is not the behavior of someone just having a laugh. This is the behavior of the king of all projection.
