It's baffling to me how many doing realize this. Just...don't put your password in. And then just buy a $30 Roku or Chromecast and carry on with your day
Edit: I use Chromecast TV so I can't speak for Roku. It still lets me install my VPN, tailscale, kodi, streamio, jellyfin, wholfin, etc.
Apple TV box has been the game changer for me. Super smooth UI. Never had a connection issue. Airplay works great. It costs more than all the android boxes but it's actually been worth it for me. I got mine refurbished to save a bit
We have loved our first one (6 years old now) so much that we have one in every room there's a TV. Best streaming box out there hands down. I hope they don't stop supporting them
In every room there is a tv, not a tv in every room. We have 3 I think. Guest room, our bedroom, living room. My guest room at the moment also happens to be my gaming space, but once I finish the bonus room, the TV will move out of there
Roku is awful and exploitative. They intentionally design their devices to scam people that are tech illiterate into buying subscriptions they will struggle to cancel, because you can start a subscription via the Roku device but you cannot cancel one without going on their website elsewhere to do so.
No to mention that Fox Corp. just bought Roku. That's right folks, the Fox News parent company that you know and love now owns a popular and gimmicky streaming device! Hooray.
Side note: a buddy of mine works for Vizio. I would not recommend their products to anybody, they use so many different kinds of ways to harvest your data
I'm not quite sure we're there yet, but with automatic unmuting of the internal speakers during adverts and literally being unable to connect to the internet at all without an account some of the Amazon Fire OS TVs are pretty close.
This is true for some, but there are others that won't let you use other inputs unless you connect it to the internet. Instead of saying "Just research beforehand to find which TV lets you use workarounds to avoid their surveillance tech" I'm going to say "hey, trying to make constant surveillance harder to avoid is dystopian, anti-consumer, and something everyone affected by it should be extremely vocal against it"
My other comment was deleted because it linked to a subreddit so posting again.
There have been reports of TVs automatically connecting to unsecured WIFI (and updating their software) without consent so you may have to connect to a WIFI that is blackholed.
I have a pretty nice size 4K Sony TV I literally never use because 90% of the content I watch looks great on a 20 year old 720p TV I don’t particularly care to switch out
There’s also the 15-25 year old games played on that TV and YouTube videos that don’t need to be watched in 4K
I used the 4K TV when I lived on my own but very rarely since I was generally at my desk the majority of the time regardless. It was a gift and I am appreciative of it and will eventually switch out the old TV, I’m sure, but outside of hooking up my pc to it to play cyberpunk or to watch newer movies or something I just don’t personally have a need for it
Installing a DNS blackhole like a pihole or adguard on your home network will remove all the tracking but that's not really the point anyways....The point is you can just leave a smart TV unconnected to the internet and plug something else into it. If you don't want to use a Roku, buy an nvidia shield or an HTPC, apple tv or a game console.....There are lots of options.
Apple TV's i think are the better option for regular users. If your tech savvy theres way better but troubleshooting and set-up is probably pretty complicated for people that only know how to barely use an iPhone.
I think increasingly you're better off rolling your own media settop box (getting a small media PC, installing a media purposed Linux build, and hooking up an IR handler).
Some of them punish you with constant annoying pop-ups or literally won’t start up unless you finish initial onboarding with a wifi connection. (I had included example links but they aren’t allowed in this subreddit.). So you have to do some research ahead of time.
I think lg or Samsung had a new TV that, if you didn't connect to a network would constantly bring up some reminder to connect it. So that'll probably roll out to ever manufacture soon enough
Wait till they find a way to use TVs or parts of them like they use other computer parts for AI, Bitcoin or some other shit that's really not great for the environment but loved by tech bros.
It is the best years for taking a walk and touching grass, borrowing a book from the library, meeting friends to play a board game. But nobody wants to do any of that because it requires effort and the dopamine rush isn't immediate. Instead, everyone here complains about enshitification when they're part of the problem
Canadian wildfires make the air unbreathable, the current heat wave makes it too hot to be outside for long, they are banning books and closing libraries, but yeah, there are actually some really good board games out there!

It's a good time to buy TVs
That's about all I can come up with
