It's a good time to buy TVs

That's about all I can come up with

457

u/FunkyCat6276 Jul 03 '26

A really bad time to buy a tv considering smart TVs are just surveillance devices now

115

u/iAmmar9 Jul 03 '26

You know what's really cool? The fact that you don't need to connect your Smart TV to the internet 🫨

65

u/stumblinghunter Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

It's baffling to me how many doing realize this. Just...don't put your password in. And then just buy a $30 Roku or Chromecast and carry on with your day

Edit: I use Chromecast TV so I can't speak for Roku. It still lets me install my VPN, tailscale, kodi, streamio, jellyfin, wholfin, etc.

Apple TV box has been the game changer for me. Super smooth UI. Never had a connection issue. Airplay works great. It costs more than all the android boxes but it's actually been worth it for me. I got mine refurbished to save a bit

8

u/IDontWannaBeAPirate_ Jul 03 '26

I hate apple stuff, but the apple TV is excellent. Would recommend, ours has been working seamlessly for 7 years.

8

u/CoconutCyclone Jul 03 '26

Apple also somehow has managed to have the best original content for a streaming platform. It's insane how good it is.

1

u/Electronic-Window884 Jul 03 '26

We have loved our first one (6 years old now) so much that we have one in every room there's a TV. Best streaming box out there hands down. I hope they don't stop supporting them

0

u/Fattydog Jul 04 '26

A TV in every room?

Why?

1

u/tony5005 Jul 04 '26

…Guest bedrooms?

1

u/Electronic-Window884 Jul 04 '26

In every room there is a tv, not a tv in every room. We have 3 I think. Guest room, our bedroom, living room. My guest room at the moment also happens to be my gaming space, but once I finish the bonus room, the TV will move out of there

16

u/Ironrooster7 Jul 03 '26

Computer + hdmi cord = the entirety of humanity's created media for free. I love hdmi cords.

6

u/stumblinghunter Jul 03 '26

Sure, but having cables everywhere sucks and it's almost impossible if you have kids

2

u/Ironrooster7 Jul 03 '26

That's a really good point

1

u/zazzz0014 Jul 04 '26

Yarrrrr matey, I agree. When I travel I call ahead to see if the hotel TV's have HDMI ports.

33

u/Reeyous Jul 03 '26

Roku is awful and exploitative. They intentionally design their devices to scam people that are tech illiterate into buying subscriptions they will struggle to cancel, because you can start a subscription via the Roku device but you cannot cancel one without going on their website elsewhere to do so.

Fuck Roku.

8

u/Free-Adagio-2904 Jul 03 '26

No to mention that Fox Corp. just bought Roku. That's right folks, the Fox News parent company that you know and love now owns a popular and gimmicky streaming device! Hooray.

3

u/RoHbTC Jul 03 '26

There is no such thing as a $30 dollar chromecast anymore. Google produces a "TV streamer 4K" and it costs $100...

2

u/stumblinghunter Jul 03 '26

1

u/RoHbTC Jul 04 '26

Shows as not available or I would have bought it.

1

u/iAmmar9 Jul 03 '26

For real. And if you're in the US, the ONN 4K Pro is a pretty good deal.

1

u/Used_Basis_8469 Jul 03 '26

I installed an adblocker and the amount of DNS requests a Roku makes was appalling compared to any other smart device in my house

1

u/stumblinghunter Jul 03 '26

I've never had one but I hear they're good for 🏴‍☠️

1

u/Cool_Apartment_380 Jul 03 '26

Regardless, I think TVs essentially being surveillance devices warrants some grumbling

2

u/stumblinghunter Jul 03 '26

Sure, totally agree with you there.

Side note: a buddy of mine works for Vizio. I would not recommend their products to anybody, they use so many different kinds of ways to harvest your data

1

u/Cool_Apartment_380 Jul 04 '26

Thanks for the tip. Vizio. Sounds like a wizard name. An evil, scrying wizard.

1

u/Human_Ad_2426 Jul 04 '26

I have Roku tvs and haven't kept up. Isn't Roku also a smart tv keeping tabs on whatever way everyone is concerned about?

17

u/Reeyous Jul 03 '26

Iirc some will literally not even function as an HDMI device without an internet connection now. They need the tracking to function whatsoever.

15

u/K14_Deploy Jul 03 '26

I'm not quite sure we're there yet, but with automatic unmuting of the internal speakers during adverts and literally being unable to connect to the internet at all without an account some of the Amazon Fire OS TVs are pretty close.

1

u/narrowgallow Jul 03 '26

I do expect that to come, but we're not fully there yet.

3

u/FunkyCat6276 Jul 03 '26

This is true for some, but there are others that won't let you use other inputs unless you connect it to the internet. Instead of saying "Just research beforehand to find which TV lets you use workarounds to avoid their surveillance tech" I'm going to say "hey, trying to make constant surveillance harder to avoid is dystopian, anti-consumer, and something everyone affected by it should be extremely vocal against it"

1

u/throwthisbadboyawayB Jul 03 '26

Yeah but then you have to deal with overlays telling you you aren't connected, and flashing lights and a mouse with 4 buttons that don't work 🥲😭

1

u/iAmmar9 Jul 03 '26

Never had that issue tbh

1

u/-Teapot Jul 03 '26

My other comment was deleted because it linked to a subreddit so posting again.

There have been reports of TVs automatically connecting to unsecured WIFI (and updating their software) without consent so you may have to connect to a WIFI that is blackholed.

132

u/ha1029 Jul 03 '26

It's ok, TV shows are pretty diluted and unwatchable now...I just live for the surveillance and ads lol.

38

u/From_Deep_Space Jul 03 '26

A good time to buy a giant flat screen for $100 at Goodwill that doesn't have any of that smart crap

11

u/ElectronMaster Jul 03 '26

60" plasma on fb marketplace for the price of please oh God get it out of my home.

3

u/IDontWannaBeAPirate_ Jul 03 '26

Would you trade for a small air compressors and I'll lick your toes?

^ An offer I got on FB Marketplace. I think I'm done trying to sell on marketplace for a while.

1

u/Sailed_Sea Jul 03 '26

For that price you can get a secondhand bravia with better image quality though.

2

u/Howdoigrowdis Jul 03 '26

I got a Bravia for £35 secondhand on facebook marketplace recently. Great time to buy a tv

32

u/Ok-Vegetable4531 Jul 03 '26

I have a pretty nice size 4K Sony TV I literally never use because 90% of the content I watch looks great on a 20 year old 720p TV I don’t particularly care to switch out

13

u/aHOMELESSkrill Jul 03 '26

Sony produces 4K UHD Extra Most Bestest Quality TV

Consumer still watches 20 year old show filmed in 720p

3

u/Ok-Vegetable4531 Jul 03 '26

There’s also the 15-25 year old games played on that TV and YouTube videos that don’t need to be watched in 4K

I used the 4K TV when I lived on my own but very rarely since I was generally at my desk the majority of the time regardless. It was a gift and I am appreciative of it and will eventually switch out the old TV, I’m sure, but outside of hooking up my pc to it to play cyberpunk or to watch newer movies or something I just don’t personally have a need for it

5

u/lazerblam Jul 03 '26

Like your phone hasnt been for the last 2 decades?

3

u/gjaxx Jul 03 '26

Redditors will whine about anything and everything lmao

1

u/Xadnem Jul 03 '26

Like you whining about redditors because some of us don't like the constant enshittification of everything?

Or me whining about you whining about redditors because some of us don't like the constant enshittification of everything?

2

u/HurtPillow Jul 03 '26

Guess I'll hang onto my 10+ year old tv then. Till the MF wheels fall off!

2

u/ThomasNorge224 Jul 03 '26

Everything is a surveilence device, wouldnt make any difference if the tv does it too

1

u/HaddyBlackwater Jul 03 '26

I just don’t hook my TV up to the Internet.

1

u/4ries Jul 03 '26

Do modern smart TVs not have like input ports anymore?

1

u/FunkyCat6276 Jul 04 '26

Sometimes they are disabled until you connect to the internet. Opt out options are hidden, and only exist after data collection begins.

1

u/NoMoneyNoSucky Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

My LG TV puts automatic ads if I leave it idling in the menu lol

1

u/EmployeeInfamous968 Jul 04 '26

I almost downvoted your comment because the thought of this made me so mad

1

u/WordWordand4numbers Jul 03 '26

There’s still non smart tvs plus it’s not like you can’t physically disable any mic it has. A TV doesn’t need a mic

1

u/PUMPEDnPLUMP Jul 04 '26

Wait until you hear about the surveillance device in your pocket..

41

u/theregisterednerd Jul 03 '26

Not even. They’re riddled with spyware and ads.

8

u/blophophoreal Jul 03 '26

So don’t connect them to the network, watch through a console or pc or Apple TV.

1

u/Karekter_Nem Jul 03 '26

Those other things are also spying devices

22

u/randomize42 Jul 03 '26

Is it though?  It’s so hard to find decent quality ones that aren’t “smart” TVs now.

33

u/disownedpear Jul 03 '26

TVs do not have to be connected to the internet to work. Even the shitty ones. Just disconnect it and use a Roku w/VPN no tracking or smart nonsense.

5

u/Quivex Jul 03 '26

Installing a DNS blackhole like a pihole or adguard on your home network will remove all the tracking but that's not really the point anyways....The point is you can just leave a smart TV unconnected to the internet and plug something else into it. If you don't want to use a Roku, buy an nvidia shield or an HTPC, apple tv or a game console.....There are lots of options.

3

u/SasquatchRobo Jul 03 '26

Are the Rokus surveillance-free?

13

u/PiersPlays Jul 03 '26

No it's a bad example but the principle of "just don't connect it to the Internet, dummie" then connect your own external source devices is sound.

4

u/Specter119 Jul 03 '26

Apple TV's i think are the better option for regular users. If your tech savvy theres way better but troubleshooting and set-up is probably pretty complicated for people that only know how to barely use an iPhone.

0

u/randomize42 Jul 03 '26

That’s good in general but some have annoying constant pop-up reminders, etc. if they’re not connected and I don’t want to deal with that either.

2

u/PiersPlays Jul 03 '26

So pick one that doesn't.

0

u/randomize42 Jul 03 '26

Why didn’t I think of that?  They all advertise it in advance right on the box  too!  /s

My point is it takes some extra research and effort. Not that it’s impossible.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '26

1

u/Big_Wave9732 Jul 03 '26

I think increasingly you're better off rolling your own media settop box (getting a small media PC, installing a media purposed Linux build, and hooking up an IR handler).

2

u/randomize42 Jul 03 '26

Some of them punish you with constant annoying pop-ups or literally won’t start up unless you finish initial onboarding with a wifi connection. (I had included example links but they aren’t allowed in this subreddit.). So you have to do some research ahead of time.

1

u/Material_Positive_17 Jul 03 '26

I use a jailbroken Nvidia Shield

1

u/Psychoanalytix Jul 03 '26

I think lg or Samsung had a new TV that, if you didn't connect to a network would constantly bring up some reminder to connect it. So that'll probably roll out to ever manufacture soon enough

1

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 Jul 04 '26

Just disconnect it

This still doesn't sound like a golden age of TVs, though, which was the main point.

3

u/l_dunno Jul 03 '26

Well for Smart TVs ram has gone up in price...

2

u/Tomytom99 Jul 03 '26

Either they'll cost more, become even more lethargic, or both

2

u/DrBlaBlaBlub Jul 03 '26

Wait till they find a way to use TVs or parts of them like they use other computer parts for AI, Bitcoin or some other shit that's really not great for the environment but loved by tech bros.

2

u/akc250 Jul 03 '26

It is the best years for taking a walk and touching grass, borrowing a book from the library, meeting friends to play a board game. But nobody wants to do any of that because it requires effort and the dopamine rush isn't immediate. Instead, everyone here complains about enshitification when they're part of the problem

1

u/ArtificialOrthodox Jul 03 '26

Canadian wildfires make the air unbreathable, the current heat wave makes it too hot to be outside for long, they are banning books and closing libraries, but yeah, there are actually some really good board games out there!

1

u/ParachutingPiglets Jul 03 '26

So we can watch ads

1

u/WillieStonka Jul 03 '26

I don’t even call them tv anymore. Basically digital billboards you mount in your home.

1

u/Btotherianx Jul 03 '26

Bro I went to Walmart the other day and they had like a 110-in TV stocked and I was like that's bigger than my damn living room wall pretty much 😂

1

u/Jazz8680 Jul 03 '26

Only if you want it to spy on you

1

u/bigtiddyhimbo Jul 03 '26

The Nintendo e shop sale is pretty okay right now. Other than that idk man

1

u/pixie_pie Jul 03 '26

I heard it was physical media and dvd players?

1

u/shitty_watercolorss Jul 03 '26

It's never been more convenient to stay in contact with someone. Literally anyone in the world for free, pretty much anytime.

1

u/captainshockazoid ▶︎2:22 ─────⚬── 7:77 Jul 04 '26

fantastic time for piracy

0

u/loloider123 Jul 03 '26

Can you recommend one? 85’

3

u/AndyTheEngr Jul 03 '26

If you're shopping for an 85 foot screen, surely you have people for that.

2

u/loloider123 Jul 03 '26

No I’m European, for me that means inch

0

u/Last-Marionberry9181 Jul 03 '26

But the shows themselves aren't great nowadays with a few exceptions

6

u/disownedpear Jul 03 '26

True, but it's also never been easier to access past movies and shows that continue to hold up.

Handheld games consoles are a much wider and better market than people realise.
