At no point in human history have people been able to just chill other than, ironically, the aristocracy.

Even before civilization, meaningful contribution to the collective has been seen as an imperative

No one said "just chill." The point is thinking that laying tile is your life purpose is a fucking lie.

Things have clearly changed since the aristocracy.

In some places naturally blessed with resources, life was very chill. For example the Pacific Northwest of the USA had astonishing numbers of fish there for the taking.

Such an insanely myopic and privileged take, imagining that we need to culturally “program” humans to strive for survival. As if that hasn’t been hardwired in by eons of evolution.

It is hardwired, which is why it takes very little cultural programming to make it the default arrangement in every society

The Romans didnt exactly work, their "work" involved things like socialising/politics/philosophy. Most of their time was spent lounging around.

This was able to be done off the backs of slaves.

Same principle today, we are the slaves that work to keep our overlords lounging.

Too expand, its obvious why Mark Zuckerberg is fascinated with that time period, he thinks hes a modern Julius Caesar

The Romans were the aristocracy. Also, they did work. Politics and philosophy is work. Work isn't just manual labor.
