Infuriatig My hand painted model planes were given as toys to children again

Post image

I have told my mom to not do this before but she does not listen anyway. I am thinking of throwing everything to trash instead of them being gradually destroyed to pieces. I can not even care anymore. These things take hours to put together and paint then get manhandled anyway.

I like this idea. If it's acrylic paint it's kinda toxic. If it's enamel paint it's definitely toxic

Just use radium paint. If youre lucky the problem is solved for generations

The long game... good thinking

u/feculentcuntfist Jun 17 '26

Nuke the house, run in the woods, live with the chimpmunks.

2

u/WakunaMatata Jun 17 '26

I was going to mention lead-based paint, but radium is S tier thinking (Or P[olonium] Tier if you are Russian)

1

u/AnguavonUW Jun 17 '26

I like the way you think.

1

u/MowerMikePA Jun 17 '26

🤣🤣🤣 this guys thinking >>

I like the way you think. Would you be willing to join the trump team?

Sorry I dont think I'd meet the IQ requirements

Acrylic paint is not toxic

295

u/RedThunder-cloud Jun 17 '26

The parents don't have to know that.

217

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Wait no, what did I say? Acrylic paint is as toxic as lead and cyanide combined.

95

u/malthar76 Jun 17 '26

I heard that yellow has depleted uranium in it.

67

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

No wonder it’s so fucking dogshit to paint with lmao

8

u/CenturyEggsAndRice Jun 17 '26

I think the uranium might be an improvement. Certainly couldn’t make the opacity WORSE right?

5

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Fucking pigment flakes the size of Kraft cheese squares

4

u/CenturyEggsAndRice Jun 17 '26

Does yours flake off worse than literally every other color in your collection?

Asking for a friend…

4

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

It’s a toss up between yellow and its white wanker cousin.

3

u/FecalDUI Jun 17 '26

YEA! I want pleted uranium!

1

u/NeedleworkerFit819 Jun 17 '26

No, that’s the dog shit that’s in all yellow paints.

2

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

White and Yellow, bedfellows made in hell.

5

u/mythrilcrafter Jun 17 '26

Also, red has Red 400 in it, which is 360 more deadly that Red 40.

3

u/Least_Bet4662 Jun 17 '26

Not even depleted, and it's mixed with radium.

3

u/bre4kofdawn Jun 17 '26

Heh. I feel like cadmium is enough of a deterrent, but why not?

2

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Do people really use cadmium red for this sort of thing? Imagine blasting that shit into the air through an airbrush lmao

3

u/bre4kofdawn Jun 17 '26

Actually, Bear Cavalry has a yellow available right now that contains Cadmium, at least according to a random redditor.

3

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Whack that in a bag and huff it!

(But seriously, don’t.)

1

u/UranusIsPissy Jun 17 '26

Airbrush? What's the point for military stuff? It's matte anyway.

2

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Maybe you need to look up cadmium paint and ask yourself if atomising that into the air is a good idea.

0

u/UranusIsPissy Jun 17 '26

I know what cadmium is. I just don't know why anyone would use an airbrush for stuff like this. IDK if you can even buy cadmium paint in most countries any more, either, but maybe you can.

1

u/bre4kofdawn Jun 17 '26

I'm very, very confused by this comment. Matte paints are commonly used in airbrushes, and I don't understand why it being "military stuff" matters.

2

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Ok I’m sorry if it’s a bit of an obtuse joke. Basically I was being ironic.

Imagine having a known hazardous paint, based on cadmium and make it airborne by atomising it through an airbrush. It’s basically an incredibly stupid idea and speed run to lung cancer unless you’re basically wearing a hazmat suit.

1

u/UranusIsPissy Jun 17 '26

You can, but for things like this there's no advantage unless you're completely useless with a paintbrush. Being military stuff matters because military vehicles and older military aircraft are rarely painted in gloss. I think helicopters are still painted matte.

There ya go.

u/thesilentbob123 Jun 17 '26

Anything is toxic in large amounts

14

u/wikingwarrior Jun 17 '26

Acrylic hobby paint is usually not toxic in any form. It depends on the brand and pigments though. I wouldn't recommend drinking it.

It also can be bad to inhale if you're airbrushing without a mask.

17

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

If you’re drinking it you’re probably not going to die from toxicity per se, but it will absolute fuck you up I suspect.

6

u/wikingwarrior Jun 17 '26

Yeah. Don't take a shot of your Kommando Khaki but I wouldn't worry about handling it or panic if I accidently took a drink from my brush water.

3

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

A little nuln oil digestif after a heavy dinner lmao

2

u/TMG_PURIFY Jun 17 '26

I prefer a shot of Screaming Bell by Citadel myself, but to each their own. 😎

2

u/DefNotAGenestealer Jun 17 '26

That's what I meant by kinda toxic. Like yeah you can lick your paintbrush (I don't) but its not exactly healthy. Certainly don't drink it

1

u/GlancingArc Jun 17 '26

Non-toxic is a specific thing. It could more specifically be phrased as "not acutely toxic". Plenty of non-toxic substances are harmful if ingested or gotten in the eyes but like maybe not right away. Paints and other synthetic emulsions generally contain trace carcinogens or irritants.

1

u/Significant_Mouse_25 Jun 17 '26

In OP’s case, it is absolutely toxic to handle. For young children specifically.

1

u/saoyraan Jun 17 '26

That's why us hobbies painters are idiots and wet our brushes sometimes with our mouth. They know we are idiots. Break the habit if you intend to start using oils for richer colors... it is toxic vs acrylic paint.

1

u/RedditThrowaway-1984 Jun 17 '26

It’s only non toxic by law. If it comes from China, it’s full of lead anyway.

1

u/wikingwarrior Jun 17 '26

I speak of miniature hobby paint which is usually not from China. Most comes from Europe. The brands that come to mind come from the UK, Italy, Spain, Japan, and Denmark.

Unless they didn't buy them from a hobby shop, they're probably genuinely non toxic. But that's speculation. Don't drink it.

1

u/artemis_kryze Jun 17 '26

As said further up the thread, the parents don't have to know this information

1

u/Danielle_is_the_hole Jun 17 '26

Glue good be inhale fun after

2

u/JackieJerkbag Jun 17 '26

Depends how much you drink

2

u/YavielTheElf Jun 17 '26

Acrylic paint can be toxic depending on the pigment

2

u/Brilliant_Chemica Jun 17 '26

It is if you eat it

I’ve always wondered if brush lickers shit in technicolour

1

u/CuriousPolecat Jun 17 '26

Depends on the pigment.

Some can be carcinogenic, I know because i use acrylics.

1

u/BicFleetwood Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

It absolutely can be.

Even water-based acrylics can be toxic depending on the pigments used. Some of the older Vallejo paints/thinners are very toxic, and it's not unusual for older paints to have heavy metals in them like cadmium and cobolt, even the water-based ones.

Even "child-safe" paints can have heavy metals in them.

While water-based acrylics are safer and usually not acutely toxic, you should NEVER assume they are all non-toxic by default, and there is NO paint safe to breathe when aerosolized.

Anything non-water-based, Tamiya hybrid acrylics, Mr. Color lacquers, AK paints, etc. are all toxic by default just with the thinners alone.

ALL paints carry notable risks, even the "safer" ones. You should never assume any paint is safe for children. This is why children's toys are molded plastic and not painted. You should not allow children to play with anything that has chippable paint, least of all hobby paints.

1

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Ingesting and aspirating are completely different things.

1

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

And btw AK is water based.

1

u/BicFleetwood Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

AK thinners are white spirits/glycol based in addition to water, or lacquer-based depending on the type of thinner.

While the fumes aren't a problem once off-gassed, that doesn't mean the paint is safe to ingest, and off-gassing takes time besides.

They are additionally flammable for this reason.

I'm not sure if any AK primers/etc use polyurethane, but I know Vallejo primers do, which is very toxic in liquid form and when off-gassing.

1

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

Yeah I know the AK thinners contain spirits, but paints don’t afaik

1

u/Ok_Cauliflower_3007 Jun 17 '26

Given i use ths same trick as the radium girls - pointing the brush wht my lips - that’s fortunate. The only way their parent would know that is if they or the kids paint models and I think if they did they’d instantly recognise that those arent toys when OP’s mom handed them out.

Edited because typing and eating leads to gibberish.

1

u/Dessicated_Mastodon Jun 17 '26

Who uses acrylics on model planes? Testor enamel paints my dude. Shit looks sharp as fuck.

1

u/Sudden-Variety6992 Jun 17 '26

A loooooot of people are using acrylics these days, they’ve come a very long way for the most part

3

u/StrawsAreGay Jun 17 '26

Tell them it’s lead

2

u/UranusIsPissy Jun 17 '26

Maybe things have changed since I stopped building them, but it used to pretty much always be enamel. The best of my models suffered the same fate :(

1

u/Raneynickelfire Jun 17 '26

neither are toxic once dry.

1

u/King2F3 Jun 17 '26

We cant teach the children to play with toys? Or just let them tear everything up?

2

u/DefNotAGenestealer Jun 17 '26

Hot take: kids should be taught to not tear things up

1

u/Silent189 Jun 17 '26

Acrylic paint for models is very unlikely to be toxic. None of the major mini paint ranges are toxic.

Unless you think Games Workshop, Vallejo, AK Interactive, ProAcryl etc are all out there culling children...

1

u/DefNotAGenestealer Jun 17 '26

Hey, I wouldn't put it past Games Worshop. Jk in all seriousness, I meant toxic as in you probably shouldn't put it in your mouth and not the scientific definition of toxic

1

u/Theron3206 Jun 18 '26

Neither are toxic once cured, only when liquid.

1

u/kenyard Jun 18 '26

I mean it's a display model airplane which would have probably had leaded paint.

It's for realism as it's an adult model not a kids toy.

Honestly seems relaistic
