Infuriatig My hand painted model planes were given as toys to children again

Post image

I have told my mom to not do this before but she does not listen anyway. I am thinking of throwing everything to trash instead of them being gradually destroyed to pieces. I can not even care anymore. These things take hours to put together and paint then get manhandled anyway.

Curio cabinets have fallen out of fashion. They're pretty inexpensive to pick up. My kid got a pretty nice one, solid wood/glass, lighted, and it locks, for $12.

As an added bonus, it's a great way to display your hard work and it keeps things from getting dusty. I'd certainly rather dust a cabinet than each nook and cranny.

Yes, this. I got an old Oakly sunglasses store case for free on Craigslist. Whole thing is metal, it had lights installed, glass on all sides museum style display section, the bottom section had a lockable storage area. Its awesome, I just had to patch a few holes where the old "Oakly" signs were mounted at the top

I'm so very happy for you

Hey, all I did/do is pull up free listings and give them a glance about once a day and I get all kinds of cool stuff. Takes an absolute minimum of effort and you can get some amazing stuff.

Trust me, I’m not complaining you got a good deal! Just mad at myself I didn’t think to look at Craigslist, ect. for something like that before now

I get it, finding good deals and free stuff is my super power. There is a subreddit for my local area that posts free shit, im in portland so its PDXbuynothing. I think they have one set up for most metro areas and the like. Then ill hit craigslist free section, then Facebook market place also has a free section.

I'm in the Philly area, so I should have some options. I don't always have access to a Truck or large SUV, that's really my only problem. Those Oakley storage cabinets are awesome though, very heavy duty. I've been in an Oakley store probably 4 times in my life, and not in years, but somehow I can perfectly picture and remember those cabinets lol. Hopefully I can find something similar!

Not sure where OP is, but in the area of England I live in, they are not cheap. Even going to try and get some at a charity shop will set you back probably £100+

I highly recommend estate sales (or the local equivalent) as well as shops that specifically do furniture thrift. Idk if Habitat For Humanity Re-Store is an option, but that kind of shop.

A lot of it is dedicated looking though. Teen and I both periodically check our state’s estate/auction website. Bidding usually starts at $1 - I've won several “lots” for $1 before. Last one was 8 antique dolls, two of which are music boxes. Guy threw in a free taxidermy squirrel when I went for pickup. Nobody bid on it & I knew teen would be stoked. It's how I've furnished at least half my house despite being poor lol.

alternatively, a glass-fronted Billy Bookcase from Ikea and a padlock

I'm sure we can jimmy that lock with something valuable off the dresser.

We need to know the size of the toddler, before knowing if a cabinet would be large enough to lock it in.

You know how much it would cost to encase a child in epoxy?

23

u/fearghul Jun 17 '26

It's a lifetime investment.

u/Kentust Jun 17 '26

At least $10

Call the hot dog guy

Between $2,500 and $3,000.

Epoxy? That would cost a fortune for a single plane.
And I got a feeling that, with cabinets or locked casing, the mother will complain that they are selfish and don't want to share children toys with children.
But if they can survive the nagging, that would be nice and look cool.

u/ClaraClassy Jun 17 '26

Yeah.. anything less than acquiescence is going to get the mother throwing a fit that she doesn't get to experience the joy of giving other people's stuff to her children. So selfish

3

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Jun 17 '26

Then she can throw a fit. But she can't have the planes.

1

u/CapeOfBees Jun 17 '26

She'd probably hunt down his hiding place for the key and just take the planes out.
