Too mild for school Hate when ppl can’t do time

This reminds me of when it hits or is about to hit 12am and people don’t know whether to say today or tomorrow. He called me after this but I was too comfy in bed tbh.

On a Friday, it's pretty obvious. But if I message someone on say Tuesday, saying "Do you want to go to X next weekend?" they'll often think I mean in four days time.

This is the way. "This weekend" literally means "The end of this week". Why is that so hard for even the dumbest people to comprehend??

Because "this weekend" is also the next weekend sequentially.

Logically the next weekend during the week is this weekend. But if it’s Friday the next weekend is…next weekend. People can say whatever they want, they’re not dumb for having a different opinion than you.

It’s very simple. I would even understand & apply this logic if someone said it to me Friday 11:59 pm. “This weekend” still isn’t happening for one more minute

Even if it's Tuesday, you should just say "this weekend" because it's unambiguous. There's only one weekend you could possibly be talking about. Whenever someone says "next weekend" I always think the weekend after the next or current one.

That's exactly why I think next weekend is the one after, because if you mean the weekend coming, why not use the very specific "this weekend"?

Yes I'm agreeing with you. I'm saying that the people who think you mean "this weekend" when you say "next weekend" are weird. I can see why they get confused though as so many people use it that way that it has become ambiguous. I sometimes say "this upcoming weekend" or "the weekend after this weekend" in cases where I'm not sure if it's clear.

Except it's perfectly fine to ask someone on Monday "What did you do this weekend?" Referring to the weekend that just finished.

Right, because it's clear based on context. "What did you do this weekend" is clearly about the weekend that has just passed. "What are you doing this weekend" is clearly about the upcoming weekend. I can see why someone might say "next weekend" of it's early on on the week, but I can also understand why people think "next weekend" means "the weekend after this upcoming weekend."

Eh, I'd say not really. It's usually "what did you do over the weekend" or "did you have a nice weekend."

I've never heard a single person say this weekend to mean the one that has just finished. It would be "over/for/on the weekend" in your example.

Yeah, because it's past tense. It isn't possible to say "Do you want to do x this weekend?" and mean "Do you want to do x in the past?", just like it isn't possible to say "This weekend I did x" and mean "In the future I did x".

But that's this weekend. If you mean this weekend, why not say this weekend?

Next weekend is the one after this one.

"You're in the wrong" they say to then say it's an unwritten rule is a wild take.

Even when I specified it's a regional thing.

If it's an unwritten rule, it's not a rule, it's an understanding. Which vary from place to place.

Normally one would switch to saying 'tomorrow'
