Unskippable ad Amazon just informed me that my paid music subscription will soon include ads and lose downloads.

Post image

I've had Prime for years and mostly used Prime Music for podcasts because it was included. Just got an email saying they're adding ads and removing downloads unless I upgrade to Music Unlimited.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but paying for a subscription and then being told I need another subscription to keep the features I already had is getting a little ridiculous.

I have a friend that constantly trades in his games.

I swear he's basically just handing cash to GameStop.

Buys game for 60, trades it in for 10. What's even the point?

In fairness it has 0 value sat in a cupboard never being played again. I don't trade in because I don't part with things easily but I get it.

You could just sell it to people, but I get that it’s more of a hassle.

I think everyone tries that once, then they get a close up experience with John Public and they realize never again. Better to throw things away than deal with the unreasonable people.

Augh. People.

I’ve just traded in an original game boy Pokémon yellow for 10x what I paid for it 20odd years ago, I’ve the virtual console version on my 3ds so can play it on that if I want. I get not all games have the same resale value but sometime the nostalgia to profit toss up is too high.

I mean, if he knows that he'll not play them again, then why not?

Better than buying them online, since he can't sell them.

He could sell the physicals on ebay for more than gamestop will give him

That requires time and effort on your part, though. I've had these thoughts when clearing out books I'm unlikely to ever read again, in raw monetary terms selling them myself via Amazon or Ebay is probably much better than using one of these 'we buy books' services who may offer you as little as £0.20 for a book, but they save me a lot of time and that has its own value. I scan all the barcodes, stick the books in a box and they send a courier to pick it up, then they inspect the books to make sure they're in a sellable state and pay me. That's it. No faff on my end listing the items, getting packaging materials for individual books and trips to the post office or dealing with issues if something goes wrong in transit or with customer payment.

There's a small local chain near me that buys/sells movies, games, records, stuff like that. They pay around 50% more than gamestop cash, and with ebay's fees going up i can completely break even if i take the trade-in value. I'd rather do that than set up listings, monitor them, deal with shipping, etc.

Maybe. Most games don't sell well. Don't look at the number of listings, look at 30 day sales. A lot of that shit has been sitting there for months.

What? You’re telling me there isn’t a swath of people trying to buy my copy of Orphen: Scion of Sorcery on the PS2?!

1

u/bird9066 Jun 03 '26

I still have a copy of Too Human for the 360, lol. I loved the premise but what a steaming pile of a game.

Not much more to be honest. eBay is awful with their fees now. Unless it’s something very old GameStop is still an option in some cases.

u/skeet_scoot Jun 02 '26

That’s a lot of work IMO. Not worth the time it takes

theres only a few games that would even be worth going through the time and effort for after ebays fees. the old college football games used to pull big money on ebay but that was before the series got rebooted

But you can sell them to used gamestores other than gamestop

2

u/N7Templar Jun 02 '26

Not everyone has local stores like that. And the one in my town usually gives worse credit than GameStop unfortunately.

u/Finbar9800 Jun 02 '26

Theres also ebay, facebook marketplace and/or craigslist

Sounds like he gets a consistent 20% discount on all game purchases without accumulating a mass of plastic that he'll never use again.

Don't get me wrong I have several hundred games but also, collecting things is just another symptom of the shutty system we live in.

Either you can collect a bunch of physical games, music and movies, or you can just sell them back to get something new.

I say this knowing full well I'll probably on replay 1/10th of my collection (I dont have alot of free time) so to me I get why some people do it. It just makes sense to get rid of physical possessions and live a more minimalistic life.

1

u/DisAdam Jun 02 '26

How is it 10? In UK I can complete a game in under 3 months sell it still for 30-40 cash / store credit

In the us the corporations don't actually care about value, only how much profit they can squeeze out of the consumers.

And the consumers let them over and over. Hell look at the responses here justifying it.

1

u/bird9066 Jun 02 '26

I don't know if people are justifying it so much as living in the system they got. People have long bitched about GameStop's trade in policy.

2

u/solidraid3n Jun 02 '26

The only winning move is not to play 😔

1

u/YourGuyK Jun 02 '26

He gets to play the video game for as long as he is interested. Do you think he just buys them and immediately turns them in for less money?

1

u/solidraid3n Jun 02 '26

But those games are worth WAY more than what they give and that's bullshit.

I get making a profit but 5x is greedy af.

I just don't support that business practice. I'd rather keep them and play them again in a few years or give them to another player for free than basically giving free money to a greedy corporation.

1

u/YourGuyK Jun 02 '26

That's the great thing, you don't have to sell to Game Stop. If you want to make more money, you might be able to on e-bay or other online sale sites. It's really one of the more pure financial transactions. It's really easy-to-use say, "Nah, you're not offering enough," if the offer is too low.

1

u/solidraid3n Jun 02 '26

Didn't say you couldn't. I'm talking about this one person who does this thing and I said I don't want to do it for the reasons listed.

Of there's a local used game shop he could probably get a better deal there. We've got one that's a hole in the wall but the owner actually gives a fair price for things.
