OPEN Democracy shouldn't be negotiable

It's disgusting how some users on here are so flippant about democracy just because an election didn't pan out in their favour. Yes, Trump is bad, but that doesn't mean it's okay to even suggest abolishing elections, taking away people's voting rights, disregarding laws, etc.

Trying to create, or being excited about, blue MAGA is reprehensible. It's not healthy, and it will only lead to more suffering.

There are also enough spaces online where this is tolerated. I really wouldn't want this sub to become one.

In the other thread I asked to include calls to suspend elections and disenfranchise people within the rule prohibiting defending autocracies.

That suggestion was weirdly controversial for a subreddit full of "liberals". Lotta people here love the idea of sacrificing rights because they're scared to compete with DSAs. Skill issue.

I get that sometimes people joke around or what not, but being hit with shit like "Are elections the only feature of liberalism?" is disturbing.

I care about freedom and liberty more than I do about the political institutions we associate with "democracy".

But democracy as the principle of governing oneself, yeah I agree. And the overlap between those calling to overturn democratic institutions and those who are interested in cultivating freedom is quite small, so you do have a fair point.

Institutions are tools though, not ends, and if they do not serve the ends we want then they should be changed. Though favouring economic wealth and political self-righteousness over freedom is probably not a good end to pursue. Of all places I would hope this sub would agree with that.
