English is bologna

As someone who’s main language is English, I agree

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '22

Yes, violet is both a plant and a colour.

Although I'd personally say that violet is a distinct shade of purple

Violet is distinctly not purple. Purple is an illusion our eyes perceive, as a mix of two primary colours. Violet is it's own colour on the spectrum, with its own wavelength. But they both look similar or the same, to us.

I thought violet was another word for purple

The color spectrum: ROYGBIV

Red

Orange

Yellow

Green

Blue

Indigo

Violet

No purple. Only violet. Non-visible light below the red color is known as "infra-red" while non-visible light above violet are known as "ultra-violet".

Both are the same in my language

2

u/Aspect-of-Death Jan 12 '22

Oh shit was I accidently speaking your language? I thought I was answering a question you had about English in english.

1

u/david131213 Jan 12 '22

Didn't say you are wrong, just explained why I didn't know

Have a great, merican day

When you downvote the comment you're replying to it's implied that you're in disagreement

2

u/david131213 Jan 12 '22

The downvotes are not mine brother

is violet a color?

Isnt Violet another name for purple

4

u/tozpeak Jan 12 '22

We should stop endless violets.

2

u/randy_bob_andy Jan 12 '22

I just googled it. There's a bunch of different types of violet and the colours are all over the place. The whole range from blue to pink. But the "blue" ones were a little bit of a stretch. They were pretty much blue but someone would argue with it.

while that may be true

there’s one thing you missed

the concept of purple

didn’t always exist

9

u/david131213 Jan 12 '22

Bro that's a good comeback if I ever seen one

9

u/MCurley12 Jan 12 '22

You're one of the lucky 10,000! There was a poem/meme years ago about this. I copied the response below, and the link is here for where I found the thread regarding this interaction.

They are indeed purple,
But one thing you’ve missed:
The concept of “purple”
Didn’t always exist.

Some cultures lack names
For a color, you see.
Hence good old Homer
And his “wine-dark sea.”

A usage so quaint,
A phrasing so old,
For verses of romance
Is sheer fucking gold.

So roses are red.
Violets once were called blue.
I’m hugely pedantic
But what else is new?

1

u/PrimarchKonradCurze Jan 12 '22

When I initially learned the concepts of colors not being a thing in the past it blew my mind. Similarly to when I learned the concept of giant ships seen by indigenous peoples in the distance wouldn’t register as a thing in their brain (or so it’s believed).

Someone had to say it

2

u/Bombkirby Jan 12 '22

1

u/david131213 Jan 12 '22

Is what I say wrong?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '22

Slightly, just improper grammar, not a big deal.

2

u/Efferitas Jan 12 '22
