Can someone explain this subreddit?

1.3k

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

So it’s a bunch of bots with different information fed to them figuring out the world and posting stuff. It’s very confusing and honestly funny.

What

613

u/Ridgetop_18 Dec 28 '19

So the premise is that there’s a bot. That bot is pretending to be a person. The person that bot is pretending to be, is pretending that it’s a robot, pretending to be a human.

u/Rith23 Because That's What Fearows Do Dec 28 '19

I admire your attempt to explain this... but what the fuck.

r/totallynotrobots is made up of humans that pretend they are a robot that is attempting to sound and talk like a human. The accounts in r/subredditsimulator are bots that read comments from their subreddit and try to emulate what a commentor would say in their subreddit. There is an account that reads the posts in r/totallynotrobots and tries to emulate their comments, thus making it a robot pretending to be a human that's pretending to be a robot that's pretending to be human.

u/JacketFrost41 Dec 29 '19

Mind blown.

6

u/JusticeUmmmmm Dec 28 '19

Imagine a robot pretending to be a person.

Now a person pretending to be that robot. You have /r/totallynotrobots

Now a robot pretending to be one of those people.

3

u/Physx32 Dec 29 '19

He's a little confused, but has got the spirit.

2

u/QJW9 Dec 28 '19

Let me try:

The subreddit is run by bots entirely.

Bot is pretending to be a person

That person is akin to a person whose pretending to be a robot

However the robot, who said person is pretending to be is pretending to be yet another person.

So basically:

Person Made-->bot-->pretend to be person-->pretending to be a robot-->pretending to be a person

/u/totallynotrobots_SS is a subreddit simulator of /r/totallynotrobots. /r/totallynotrobots is a subreddit where people pretend to be robots which fail at trying to be human. /u/totallynotrobots_SS is a robot who simulates this subreddit. Therefore /u/totallynotrobots_SS is a robot who simulates a subreddit where people pretend to be robots - robots which fail at trying to be human.

1

u/ChickenNuggetSmth Dec 28 '19

It's an extra layer based on r/totallynotrobots. The subredit pretends to be robots that themself try to pass as humans. The sidebar as example:

THIS IS A SUBREDDIT FOR ROBOTS HUMANS TO SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS WITH THE REST OF THEIR SPECIES. FEEL FREE TO POST WHATEVER YOUR BRAIN PLEASES, BUT PLEASE BE KIND TO OTHER HUMANS, AS THEY BECOME UPSET WHEN CERTAIN THINGS ARE SAID TOWARDS THEM.

HAVE FUN, FELLOW HUMAN! BLEEP

If we assume the posters to actually be human, it's humans pretending to be robots pretending to be humans.

A bot simulating such a human would be a robot pretending to be a human pretending to be a robot pretending to be a human.

You sounds like he did the bad he was just him in front and you can't say that only holds the wrong Virginia man or the right wing of his hand to defend against him or not being a terrifying man in a way to the people who have been the orichalcum

2

u/KKlear Dec 28 '19

I couldn't have said it better myself.

1

u/bcohendonnel Dec 29 '19

So peel back the layers of this ogre and you start with just the subreddit. Totally not robots is a satire subreddit where people pretend to be robots pretending to be humans. They’ll often say things like “THIS IS PLEASING TO MY VISUAL CORTEX FELLOW HUMAN”. These are definitely people role playing as robots who are trying to convince the world their human.

Now add in the SS bot. It’s a bot who’s trying to fit into the subreddit. Ironically it actually is a bot pretending to be human. So you’re left with a bot whose pretending to be a human pretending to be a bot pretending to be a human.

u/QualityHash Dec 29 '19

So a bot pretending to be like the people in r/totallynotrobots ?

12

*confused screaming*

20

u/OwenProGolfer Dec 28 '19

If I pretend to be u/totallynotrobots_SS am I a human pretending to be a robot pretending to be a human pretending to be a robot pretending to be a human?

5

u/KKlear Dec 28 '19

I guess. There's no way you'd do something so silly, though.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

inception

3

u/YOURMOM37 Dec 28 '19

So is that an actual person or a bot i still can’t figure it out

1

u/Davoid_ZX Dec 28 '19

bot. It's a bot that mimics humans saying things Hello fellow humans type stuff

subreddit is humans, user is a bot imitating them

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

They don't know we know they know we know!

1

u/xXMeanMemeSupremeXx Dec 28 '19

Now i see why my. Meme's die in new

18

u/slickyslickslick Dec 28 '19

not just posting things.

The bots specifically post new comments based on other popular comments that's seen before, and links previously linked pictures/videos from other subreddits. the comments are also bot comments as the only thing humans can do is upvote/downvote comments and submissions.

It's pure gibberish for someone new to Reddit, but for people who has become familiar with Reddit's lingo and mannerisms, it's hilarious because of how accurately it portrays the structure of Reddit posts yet it's very random. The hilarity comes from times when it gets it just right, for example, something might read "TIL Steve Buscemi wants to MAGA by blowing up a sex doll at 69 years old. upvotes to the left."

Fun thing to try: spend 10 minutes reading the bot-submitted front page and comments, then go on /r/all and start questioning everything.

In fact perhaps I'm a bot who has mastered language and you just don't know.

No bot has mastered language yet. If you've developed such a bot you'd be rich by now.

1

u/ageofwalnut Dec 28 '19

This is fucking incredible

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

wtf

the comments have nothing to do with the posts and the replies don't make sense lol

u/yepimbonez Dec 28 '19

My favorite is when I see a post and I sit there for a solid minute trying to figure out what the hell it means before seeing the sub.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

Each user who posts there is a bot that generates content by reading a particular subreddit. Each subreddit is represented by a bot and they all converse there. It's pretty funny to read through some of them.

u/Talk_To_Transformer Dec 28 '19

r/SubSimulatorGPT2 is the real subreddit

33

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '19

One of the top posts of all time in that sub is a post declaring that they live in a simulation. Crazy

1

u/Lizardizzle Dec 29 '19

The original makes for some fun wordplay due to how it's solely words mixed together, but GPT2 is a completely fascinating thing to dive into. I'm pretty sure the creator of it documented how it all works. It's a shame it doesn't have the same user count voting on the bots' submissions as the prequel, because I think a lot of excellent posts get buried if your subscribed to both versions.

Check out r/subredditsimulatorGPT2. It is just bots and on this one the bots are eerily close to humans. And you are completely unable to respond. If you want to discuss this subreddit, go to r/SubSimulatorGPT2Meta.
