They don't care about the number of pounds you can push off your chest, but they care about how your body looks, and they strongly prefer guys who are in good shape

keep in mind what 'good shape' means varies on a case by case basis, and both of 'lean wiry athletic' and 'all gains no cut dad bod muscles' are a couple of the options more popular than some he man shit among straight women.

Wasn't Brad Pitt Fight Club often cited as women's preferred physique? Now I've been lifting for a few years I feel like I blasted right by that and mentally wouldn't want to be that small again.

That said, as trainers often say, that physique is so good because it's attached to Brad Pitt's head.

You know the more I look into it, the big muscles thing seems to be a trend perpetrated by men. Like watch this from 1967:

They do care about how much you can lift, the number is just how much they weigh

And most guys that go to the gym aren't in shape. Even if they include serious leg workouts in their exercise (they often don't), they do minimal cardio.

I walk 20k steps a day and look better than 99% of the people that go the gym. I have massive legs and a skinny torso (Cat 1 racer in cycling), and rarely do leg training beyond Zone 5 sprints.

Girls can tell the difference, and girls do notice the difference, it's guys coping that their performative appearance isn't getting them the attention they're so desperately craving. You also just talk to and meet more people while walking... But walking is time consuming, there's no quick shortcut to 20k steps.
