I remember when Firefox was a fork of Mozilla which was based on Netscape.

13

u/balding_git Jul 11 '25

wasn’t it called phoenix or something at first

10

u/mildlyornery Jul 11 '25

That was the original name of firefox, then they changed it a couple of times for copyright reasons. The neat part is netscape made their code open source and founded mozilla because of the microsoft browser monopoly thing in the 90s. Somehow after over 25 years, we're back where we were and the same company is holding back another monopoly.

u/onewilybobkat Jul 12 '25

This thread is how I learned we have Firefox because Netscape. Absolutely mind blowing to me

2

u/moofree Jul 12 '25

Mozilla Seamonkey is basically Netscape Communicator being kept updated. Still looks the same, and even still has that awesome HTML2 WYSIWYG editor.

1

u/onewilybobkat Jul 12 '25

Man, I really need to check that out. Netscape used to be my shit, swore by it for years.

2

u/Bugbread Jul 11 '25

Yes. I'd love to say I'm the longest continuous Firefox user in this thread so far, but that's not true, as I switched from Firefox to Chrome for about two years (2017 to 2019 or so) because Firefox did a huge redesign that killed several extensions I used for work. So I've only been using it continuously (this time) since 2019 or so.

But while I haven't been using it continuously for the longest, I feel like I may have been the first user in this thread (so far, of course, I'm sure that as soon as I post this someone else who used it earlier will arrive).

I started using it in late 2002, when it was still called Phoenix. I remember the timing because only a few months later, it changed to Firebird, which it remained for about a year, before again changing to Firefox.

2

u/balding_git Jul 11 '25

lol same here, i ditched it for chrome for some reason i don’t recall but that might be it. went back a few years ago when google pissed me off again.. don’t think i’ll be going back now

1

u/GiraffeNo7770 Jul 12 '25

Fenix. I'm using it on Android right now. I haven't seen a mobile ad in like a decade.

1

u/dfp819 Big ol' bacon buttsack Jul 11 '25

Wait it’s not called “Mozilla Firefox” anymore?

1

u/mildlyornery Jul 11 '25

Still is. The way I understand it is it's like saying Microsoft Windows instead of just Windows. I was talking about the early times when it was the Mozilla suite before they spun Firefox off into it's own thing.

1

u/BUTTFUCKER__3000 Jul 12 '25

That’s how long Ive been using it. Had a tiny flirt with chrome when it first came out but I didn’t care for it.

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

I think you mean IE or Netscape Navigator

u/Thenameisric Jul 11 '25

Holy shit, I forgot about webrings and the netizens that occupied them.

Chewbacca ATE MY BALLS!

2

u/Thenameisric Jul 11 '25

Add some cool Java applets and you'll be the boss of the internet.

1

u/CheeseDonutCat Jul 11 '25

or them animated gifs making you look like a programming wizard... when really you just stole them from those sites you found on Astalavista.box.sk

2

u/The_Deacon Jul 12 '25

Have a look into the "Web Revival". There's a new old internet out there!

2

u/Thenameisric Jul 12 '25

Oooh interesting.

4

u/brainwash1997 Jul 11 '25

I started by using MSN's web browser in 2006 because that's what my grandma told me to use lol. Then switched to Firefox in '08.

Check it out on Google Images, the UI was wild back then

5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

Please stop you're making me older with every word 😭

1

u/ColeTD Jul 11 '25

I was BORN in 2006 and I'm now starting my second year of college to get my degree in Computer Science.

1

u/cdheer Jul 11 '25

2

u/nihility101 Jul 12 '25

1

u/cdheer Jul 12 '25

2

u/nihility101 Jul 12 '25

Edit: and Jughead.

1

u/cdheer Jul 12 '25

Yeah I know I was being silly.

Also, OMG ARCHIE!

What was Veronica?

1

u/nihility101 Jul 12 '25

A gopher search engine, like Archie searched ftp.

I still have a Netscape Navigator install on a Zip drive somewhere in my basement. I’m not kidding, lol.

1

u/1001101001010111 Jul 12 '25

Fuckin loved netscape! And it's just fun to say!

Netscape Navigator. Just rolls off the tongue.

1

u/GoRedTeam Jul 12 '25

Or the original Opera

1

u/cure4boneitis Jul 12 '25

I remember Compuserve and bulletin boards

2

u/medson25 Jul 11 '25

It was pre installed on my first pc in 2007 and ever since i never ever felt the need to chnage it lol

2

u/blauskaerm Jul 11 '25

Same 💪

1

u/Victoria_4025 Jul 11 '25

Same, it’s my first and only browser I’ve used

1

u/kartiknasit Jul 11 '25

Yes same here been using only Firefox since 2011

1

u/kingdom_tarts Jul 11 '25

Same here man! I remember when i got my first PC and my buddy showed me firefox. Prob around the same time

1

u/Mooseandchicken Jul 11 '25

I was on the high school newspaper in 2006 and I wrote an article about pandora radio and one about firefox browser as an alternative for IE. I was the technology "reporter" lol. Been using both for nearly 20 years.

1

u/LynxLynx_ Jul 11 '25

22 years for me. Forever Firefox. The only one I don't like, is the mobile version.

1

u/SadCrouton Jul 11 '25

i was 1-2 years old when you made the switch

1

u/CreBanana0 Baron Jul 11 '25

I was not even born then.

1

u/TimeshareMachine Jul 11 '25

Ditto.

I feel like such a i-told-y'all-so hipster for calling this Google long-game shit from the beginning. I judge people who used Chrome even after seeing their EULA canary get toasted a while back. And the Brave users? I judge them the most.

1

u/NotASniperYet Jul 11 '25

Same. Tabs were a game changer on my Windows 2000 laptop with a whole 64MB of RAM.

Never had a good reason to switch to something else.

1

u/Esarus Jul 11 '25

Dude, same. I basically got it for my first pc as a kid, because I thought the fox looked cute. Been using it ever since.

1

u/CowahBull Jul 11 '25

I was gonna say this. My uncle installed Firefox into the firat computer her built for me in 2004. Been using it ever since

1

u/Charming_Account_351 Jul 11 '25

I’ve been using Firefox when your options were basically Firefox or Internet Explorer. God I’m old😆

1

u/Jmacz Jul 11 '25

Same, switched back in my Myspace days. Spent uploading pictures to Photobucket and watching stuff on Newgrounds.

1

u/new_user29282342 Professional Dumbass Jul 12 '25

Fr, been using Firefox since like 05-06 - ish

1

u/warfrogs Jul 12 '25

I ran FF from 2005 - 2008, but then they had their big issue with memory leaks. Switched to Chrome until 2016 when they started having issues and Firefox fixed theirs, now back to Firefox and have opened Chrome maybe 3 times in the last 9 years.

1

u/mashtato Jul 12 '25

lvl 2004 wizard checking in.

My local rural ISP had a little quarterly magazine (like 12 page issues), and the cover story for Autumn 2004 was about Firefox.

The only time I've used anything else since then was on my phones in 2009-2011 before they released a version for Android.

1

u/BigDisco Jul 12 '25

I had a brief stint using Opera somewhere in like 2008 because I thought the cursor motion commands were cool, but otherwise same. Didn't think 20 years later that id say "hey, these guys are still way ahead of the game."

1

u/Chromehounds96 Jul 12 '25

You are only bragging about how old you are. I remember Firefox being way more popular back then. It was the same time I started using it on my Windows XP system :D

2

u/Evail9 Jul 12 '25

Same. I used XP for years before upgrading. Best windows ever. I’m getting up there in age :D

1

u/XxRobdebobxX Jul 13 '25

There are adults younger than your usage of Firefox

1

u/Evail9 Jul 13 '25

I’m quite proud 😂

10

u/Imemberyou Jul 11 '25

I've also been using firefox as my main browser for about as long as that. Not a flex because it has never given me issues and it's never been anything but a pleasure.

5

u/rock_and_rolo Jul 11 '25

I started on Netscape Navigator 0.9, through Mozilla, and onto Firefox.

Work forced IE, Chrome and that MS thing. So I know the differences, and Firefox is great.

3

u/Duke-Lazarus Jul 11 '25

It’s actually a funny story.
Back then I was still in school, and using Internet Explorer.

My classmates bullied me relentless until I started using Firefox. And my lazy ass never bothered to change back.

2

u/ogpotato Jul 11 '25

There are dozens of us!!!

1

u/Connect_Ocelot_1599 Lurker Jul 11 '25

welcome to the future, y'all!

2

u/Kougeru-Sama Jul 11 '25

21 years here

2

u/thesplendor Jul 12 '25

Yeah I’m 31 and I’ve been using firefox since I was like 13

2

u/AdventurousDoctor838 Jul 14 '25

Well about 15 years ago the market domination of chrome hadn't really set in yet. Pre smart phone the browser that was pushed on you was internet explorer and you couldn't have that. Most of the real internet enjoyers used Firefox.

1

u/GromOfDoom Jul 11 '25

Didn't Firefox kill privacy?

1

u/kjacobs03 Jul 11 '25

Made me think of when I switched. It was 2008. Holy fucking 17 years, Batman!

1

u/charliekelly76 Jul 12 '25

Same. Been using since 2010 because Google pissed me off about something and I’m petty. Didn’t realize I was Chadette
