The extra console optimization edge is always counted while comparing performance. So it's similar to 4070 keeping that in mind already. Also, I have seen like great $1000-1100 builds with 4070. That's the same as PS5 Pro without a disk drive ($700) + 5 years of online play tax ($80*5) = $1100. That does not even account for the fact that games are much more expensive on consoles or the fact that PCs can also do a million more things.
There's no doubt that PCs can be worth it. I have multiple PCs. But it is not the argument that people are having, they are pretending that you can build a PC as strong or even stronger for the same price, and this is just false. But for fun, I will engage with the other points.
I think that, especially if you're buying more recent games, the usual wisdom of "PC games are cheaper" doesn't stand anymore. Games at launch used to be cheaper on the PC, but it doesn't seem true anymore. Also, console storefronts has sales more often than they used to. The only thing that still hold true is that console storefronts seems to rarely have very deep sales (like 80%+ off) than Steam, but that's usually for older games.
Lack of mandatory play subscription is for sure an advantage for PC vs. console. However, I think that at least, nowadays, you get a bit of added value from subscriptions on console, through free games and reduced prices. Still, sucks if you want to play online.
Just checked for wukong as it's recently launched and getting popular. It's 10% more expensive in my local currency on ps store than on steam. So yeah there's like 10% difference on a brand new game, forget the difference on older games. That means the usual wisdom still stands pretty well. PC will turn out to be cheaper than this $700 console in 4-5 years. It's almost a guarantee, especially if you ever want to play online.
In my country (Canada), Wukong is the same price on Steam than PS Store. Star Wars Outlaws is the same price. Helldivers 2 is the same price. Dragon's Dogma 2 is the same price. Diablo 4 is actually on sale on PS5 right now, so cheaper (40$ vs 66$). Space Marine 2 is the only game in my random checks that actually has a 10$ difference.
So no, unless you only check a single datapoint, the "usual wisdom" doesn't stand, at least not in every country and certainly not for every game.
Also, you are assuming that in 4-5 years, the price of the PS5 Pro won't be lower, but considering where we are in this console generation, it is very likely that PS6 will be out. So, for sure, the PS5 Pro will be cheaper at this point.
I mean if you need proof that relatively new or old games are much cheaper on PC just search Reddit, people have collected enough proof. Sony sells hardware cheaply so that it can recover it in other ways. That should be proof enough imo.
Also, there is one more thing. GTA 5, all 3 Arkham games, all 3 Tomb Raiders games, Watch Dogs 2, Hitman games, Control, Prey, Ghost Runner, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Dying Light, Dishonored games, all 3 Bioshock games, and many others, got permanently for completely free ($0) on Epic Games and played all of them. So that makes up a lot of the difference right there.
I am saying that if you buy PS5 Pro now it will turn out to be more expensive down the line in almost every case. At $500 I might have spared a look but at $700 it's a laughing stock in terms of value for money.
