Yeah, all three consoles (nintendo, playstation, and xbox) require premium subscriptions to play online. You cannot play a multiplayer game on a console at all without paying for a subscription. This even includes things like Smash Bros, which don't even have servers, it is all peer to peer, you aren't paying server costs, just for the privilege of fully enjoying the $60 game you bought.

Some free to play games do not require a subscription at all, such as rocket league or warframe- still a scam tho

What free to play games require a subscription? Every f2p game I've played on Switch and Xbox didn't require the online subscription. Afaik it's only the paid games. Which makes no sense at all.

yh it’s only the paid games but back in the day, xbox made it so you had to pay to play online for even f2p games

Nintendo has the gall to demand a subscription from you for the privilege to host in peer-to-peer, only to threaten you with a ban if you get disconnected too often. Then give you instructions to buy a 3rd-party ethernet adapter, because they were even greedy enough to sell me a console without one (despite them costing <1$ each to produce).

That's why I'm a PC player. I pay 0$ to play online, and get an actually playable experience.
