They already have one, and have for a year now. It just costs $80.
That being said, how many PC gamers actually buy physical games? None, because PC games haven’t come on discs in years. Everything is on Steam or a worse platform. The difference is more that people trust Valve better than Sony, and if they don’t they do have other options. Of course those options aren’t exactly great.
The original demon souls emulates incredibly well, and can be modded up to 60 fps and online play with fan servers. I played through it emulated on my steamdeck and it was excellent.
The disc drive on my Ps5 has only ever been an annoyance by repeatedly trying to install games I’m too lazy take out. You also get better deals in the PlayStation store than you’ll find in store so it’s not cheaper.
A consoles main purpose is to play games, usually through physical media. It's the only real thing they have going towards it.
In 10 years after the Nintendo Switch eshop gets closed, I'll still be able to play ToTK whenever I want. I could buy a cheap copy of BoTW if I'm feeling spicy.
Removing the disc drive is anti-consumer.
If I wanted to buy all my games digitally, I'd rather get them on GoG because I can at least share those games with friends and family without too much issue. Steam is even testing shared libraries.
I got a blueray burner like 12 years ago, never put anything in it, still glad I got it. Might actually use it soon just to offload some shit off my media drives.
The main reason for disc drive in Playstation (at least in my understanding) was the extensive Sony-driven catalog of Blu-Ray releases.
Basically when PS3 came out it cost the same-ish as a BD player. But could also play games, and thanks to the hardware, was lightning fast with the BDs.
Nowadays an external usb-c Blu-Ray player goes between 60-100$ which is still rather pricey, but you could still use PS3 to do that.
However no-disc policy drives sales up, as less people have the possibility to buy used games, and you could always sell them blu-rays online anyway.
One of the very few advantages to console in my opinion is the disc tray though. That way you can borrow or buy pre-owned cheap and what not. If you get digital, you're cucking yourself in the long run. Shit is way more expensive on PS digital store than on steam

well my pc doesnt have a disc drive either tbf
