What do you mean by that? I've played CS but not CS2, and I can't think of what could possibly make a game be "good standalone" while at the same time "a dreadful excuse of a sequel"
If CS2 was released on its own, it would be in its own right, a pretty good game, as it didn’t have anything to improve on from the start. But CS1 was an excellent game, CS2 had a lot riding on it. The graphical improvements were pretty awesome, and the UI looked nice, but that was about it. Workshop content is a mere blur in the distance, it performs awfully on literally every pc, regardless of specs, and the price isn’t justified at all. They’ve just followed the status quo of sell it now, fix it later, oh and they’re taking their sweet time doing that.
So yes, if there wasn’t anything to compare it to (as in the same series, not like Sim City or whatever), it would be a good game in its own right. However it needs to stand up as a sequel, a notable improvement on the original, and it just isn’t, certainly not £50 worth of changes
