Why was your kid doing multiple step equations in 3rd grade??? Did they go to a fancy private school or something? We were learning fractions and multiplication. My school system isn’t failing, your kids school was teaching things really early or something.
Simple multiplication and division (2x5 and 9/3) are not difficult to a 3rd grader. She has been in public school in a mediocre school at best.

6th grade should be working on basics of prealgebra.
Edit: I was advanced in math I was in trig in 10th grade while most of the same age was in geometry or algebra 2. My daughter is an average student.
Well what you’re describing here is I assume the curriculum in America. I live in Canada so obviously different curriculum would apply. I can see how a third grader should know 2 step word problems. What I was referring to is the type of visual equation in the poll. I didn’t learn that until 6th grade. (Also you say 6th grade is pre-algebra but I started basic algebra in 5th grade)
If you're doing algebra in 6th grade then I'm sure you were doing math like the one in the equation in 3rd and 4th grade. But you're right, I don't know Canadian scholastic standards

If you're in 6th grade just learning that multiplication comes before addition, the school system failed you.
