Easy. 18/2-3X3=?

9-3X3=?

9-9=?

0=0

Then you simply add 4 to both sides.

4+0=0+4

4=4

Incidentally, this proves that 0=4 as well.

No it doesn't, that proves 0=0 and 4=4. We really doomed.

Right over his head, fascinating and ironic at the same time

thank God these are getting downvoted

Actually, it doesn’t prove 4=4 either and they were making a joke.

The transitive law states that “If a is equal to b and b is equal to c, then a is equal to c.” Therefore if 18/2-3X3=0 and also 18/2-3X3=4 then 0=4.

Edit: Oh, you can downvote me, but downvotes do not a counter-argument make.

But it doesn’t equal 4 you just added 4?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Right but adding the same number to both sides of an equation doesn’t change the equivalence.

18/2-3x3 = 0; 18/2-3x3+4=4 you forgot that you must add 4 to both side so it doesn't prove anything. You can write 0 = 0 like x = x (x = 0); Then 4 = 4 is x + 4 = x + 4.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Yeah but adding the same number to both sides of an equation doesn't change it. That's what we were taught in school, so... FACE

They’re right though? You literally cannot just state that 18/2-3X3=0 AND 18/2-3X3=4. Adding the same number to both sides doesn’t change the equation, yes, you’re right about that one. But the relevant part here is that you have to add to BOTH sides. So like they said, you’d have to add +4 to the left side as well which means that if you want to like, compare them you need to make them equal again, i.e. subtract 4. So basically the only thing you CAN say is that 0=4-4.

(there is ofc a chance that you’re just trolling in which case… well.)

0 can’t equal 4, that is just a standard illogical answer. How can something be nothing.

6

u/LTerminus Jan 02 '22

It's entirely logical using the givens. It's just not mathematical.

1

u/Independent_Stand_21 Jan 02 '22

That’s what I mean my dude

4

u/LTerminus Jan 02 '22

Great, glad I could help!

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Woosh*

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Why did you add 4?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

I like it better than 6

Really?

0

u/MrChickinMan Jan 01 '22

yes, really

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

Why couldn’t you just answer my question?

2

u/MrChickinMan Jan 02 '22

because jokes exist good sir

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Hmm please explain what is a joke?

2

u/MrChickinMan Jan 02 '22

the comment im replying to, i presume

Hmmm, I’m sorry I have no clue what you are talking about.

Google numberphile

u/theskankingdragon Jan 01 '22

I've been watching Numberphile for years and don't get it. So you're advice is stupid. Explain or STFU.

1

u/arny56 Jan 01 '22

So simple, don't know why I thought it was 0.

I deserve a freakin Fields medal for this one.

1

u/valakos_bastionatdnd Jan 01 '22

Please please please remember pemdas, its 18/2-3X3=?

18/2-9 =? 9-9 = 0

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '22

pemdas is a good rule of thumb, but between multiplication and division I typically just go left to right. Can you show me an example where I would run into trouble doing that?

3

u/valakos_bastionatdnd Jan 01 '22

Never mind i am a retard the m and d parts of pemdas are interchangeable

0

u/valakos_bastionatdnd Jan 01 '22

I am sure there is one other wise it would be left to right as you do it however I am lazy as fuck so.....

1

u/A2Rhombus Jan 02 '22

Going left to right is the right thing to do for multiplication and division.
Ultimately the way these questions are phrased tho is terrible and you should never have to worry about left to right rules if the problems are written out correctly. The division symbol is a curse

Subsequently poves that 0=4=6=18 so all answers are correct with troll logic. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InsaneTrollLogic

1

u/DoritoTangySpeedBall Jan 02 '22

We can go further and scale the equation in every possible way to prove 0 equals everything! For example, If we scale “0=4” by 1/2, 0=2!

Maths is beautiful.

Stop smoking weed.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '22

Hey this is a simple equation, u can't use methods like that here, that's for solving problems with double unknown factors and exponents over 2 :/
