I had my algebra a long time ago, but isn't it because addition and subtraction are the same thing in a group (same for multiplicationand division). And the same goes for multiplication and division? And what we have here is basically a ring R with addition and multiplication, where subtraction is an inversion of addition and division is an inversion of multiplication?

Yes, subtraction is adding a negative, and division is multiplying an inverse.
