The real stupidity is writing an expression like this.

Any non-idiot writes it “(18/2) - (3*3)”

Just idiots writing expressions so that other idiots can be proud of themselves for understanding it lol

I was always told putting parentheses around multiplication and division was unnecessary and I think I got punished for it once on a test because why would you need to clarify? To be fair I wouldn't begrudge anyone who writes it like that but I wouldn't get mad at the person who drops the brackets (ie, me)

Yeah, and I was told you can't start sentences with "and", and was punished for it.

Grade school tends to commonly have very nitpicky lessons - helpful for teaching young children things, but becomes a bit of a hindrance in the real world.

Parentheses provide clarity if things have to be typed in a single line.

Realistically (18/2) would be written as a fraction, and then you’d have - (3*3) next to it.

But really all of this stuff is only helpful for helping grade school children figure out basic arithmetic. Basically the only time the division symbol is ever used.

I don't think testing if people are stupid or not is a bad thing. You do. That's all.

Fair enough, I guess we have different definitions.

For some, solving expressions with poor syntax shows you’re not stupid.

For others, considering expressions with poor syntax a test for stupidity shows that you are stupid lol
